writing after a long break is so affirming like wow. i can actually do this thing. i rock
I always get this existential crisis before getting back into my writing like: Do I even remember how to do this thing? What if ai dreamed it all? What if I got into this wormhole and it was another version of myself who actually did this writing and the current version of myself has no clue?
Word count isn't real.
Word count can't hurt you.
Well my word count has been making the last 4 years of my life miserable because I just can’t seem to Finish Editing!
Book Grace ily
I enjoyed the movie a lot, I mean Ryan Gosling!!, but the audiobook was even more intense. Highly recommended!
If you feel like the emotional moments you've written aren't hitting hard enough, that they aren't making you want to cry, that they aren't making you want to grab a character by the shoulder and shake them, that they aren't making you want to run out your room and scream to the heavens... it's because you've read those moments a hundred times before. You know what's going to happen. You know how it ends. It doesn't surprise you. It probably doesn't faze you. The scene isn't bad at all. You've just grown immune to it. But, your readers will feel like you stabbed them with a knife and twisted the blade. That's what matters.
What if I still get all the feels every time I read it? Does this make me a legit writer or am I being an emotional wreck?

A crucial part of the bookstore experience is saying hi to all the books you’ve already read
I thought I was weird for doing this 😂
banned books you need to read
with everything going on in the world, it's so important to stay educated. a lot of these books are banned because there are parallels to dystopia and today. these books are just some that i have read, and i'm working on reading more banned books, so drop your recs below!
1984 by George Orwell
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
The Giver by Lois Lowry
The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
You're the Only One I've Told by Meera Shah
**note: by the term, "banned books", it means that these books are frequently challenged, usually by conservative groups, and as a result, these books have been banned in some schools and libraries across the US. so these do NOT mean they are banned everywhere.
BUT the trump administration is aiming to ban A LOT books across the US, and most of the books on here are on their list.**
Just finished watching The Handmaid’s Tales tv series and it’s one of the most relevant show out there. Leaves you wondering if the characters will ever find resolution. And honestly with the current political climate in the world (and closer to home), it feels about right. We can only hope for better days.
I've Cracked How To Pronounce the Planet Beginning With 'U'
Let's look at the two usual suspects:
- Ur-ANUS (Obviously bad. Schoolchildren and immature adults have been dogging on this since the name was codified. Main reason I am making this post.)
-Yurin-us (Often used as the safe alternative, claimed by some to be the true pronunciation. HOWEVER, there is one crucial problem many miss. It substitutes saying anus when spoken aloud to saying urine. Not much better, is it? I THINK NOT.)
And it is with these known facts, sharks, that I present my elegant solution, written using IPA standard:
əɹənəʊs/əɹ-ə-nəʊs
(or the 'ur' in 'fur' , the ever-present schwa (uh) in "nuh-uh", a classic n as a child may say it while learning the alphabet and the 'ose' in 'dose'.)
I am proud to say that this may be my masterwork. No longer will kindergarten and first grade teachers be tormented by a built-in invitation to toilet humor, no longer will this interesting galactic phenomena be pigeonholed into simply being a punchline with no setup! For I, on this, the grandest of days, have slain this linguistic leviathan and forged a new safer, better path. I have done my duty* to this world and have ensured my chapter in the oh-so-heavy tome of human history! The echoes of my name shall reverberate through hallowed halls ad infinitum. You, my dear subjects, are so very welcome.
…
…
*Also, chance the pronunciation of "duty" to "dutty" as to avoid any comparisons to feces, thank you.
I always have a hard time using that word when teaching middle school. Like how the hell am I supposed to make it sound school appropriate? 🤣

sci fi is all about getting so scared and ripping tubes out of yourself. people miss this
sci fi is all about desperately trying to reclaim your violated bodily autonomy. it’s all about asserting that you are a being with agency, and you can choose what happens to your own person, even if that’s ripping tubes out of yourself. and also sometimes an alien is there
The joys of having spent over 10 years writing a story set in an underwater ark. Now I feel claustrophobic.
No one told me I’d be stuck underwater for so long.
(link to Amaranth, where everyone needs therapy but gets giant mysteries instead)
The editing stage is so random.
Spent a week on chapter 32. A day on chapter 33.
How can you plan to finish on time?
(Current progress of my last draft: chapter 33/40)
2022 me: I’m going to finish writing this series next year. I know exactly what I’m doing now that I’ve written three books in that series already.
2023 reader: Is the next book out yet?
2024 reader: Is the next book out yet?
2025 reader: Is the next book out yet?
2026 me: No, the next book is not out yet. I still need to edit 8 chapters to finish this book. Oh and I should add a new book to write after this one to conclude the series nicely. There’s too much left to tell.
Hello, guys!
I’m David M. Snow. I write science fiction and fantasy with queer characters who must make impossible choices in fractured worlds, and where people are stubborn enough to keep hoping anyway.
I’m currently working on the Amaranth series (book 3!), where every answer seems to raise a more dangerous question.
This blog will mostly be:
• snippets from works in progress
• worldbuilding
• character thoughts
• research rabbit holes
• occasional existential crises about writing
Thanks for being here!
