For Awesome ‘Possum 3, now on Kickstarter for another day, David Kirkham and Kes Bradley created the comic “Preserving the Silurian Age,” about the geological history of the Wrens Nest from prehistoric times to the present day. 

David K. has contributed cartoons to Run of the Mill, Villager Magazine and the Forbidden Planet website. Most recently he has been developing a project with the BBC. He is the author of the semi-autobiographical comic Tripped Electric at trippedelectric.tumblr.com.

After finishing a degree in screenwriting, Kes Bradley made the natural career progression of becoming a support worker. Keen to get back into writing he is currently studying for a masters in his spare time, and spends the days scribbling scripts whilst riding the bus to and from work.

How did you pick your topic? We both originally hail from the Black Country and we wanted to raise awareness of its geographical influence, which has an amazing history that’s been much overlooked by the rest of the world.  

This project means so much to us on a personal level as well: David studied graphic design at Mons Hill College right next to the Wrens Nest area, and spent many glorious lunch breaks exploring its vast, ancient-looking landscape. A couple of David’s relatives also went there when it used to be a high school. It’s very much a family affair!

What’s your favorite animal or plant? We find all fauna and flora fascinating so it’s difficult to choose, though David is quite fond of amphibians and other cold blooded creatures, whilst Kes digs the blobfish.

What draws you to comics? The economy of storytelling within comics is what puts it above other mediums. The frugal way in which their facts, wondrous worlds, and complex characters are told is delightful.
