Week 9

For my multimodal text I have chosen the extremely powerful ‘To This Day Project’ by Shane Koyczan.

This is an amazing example of using digital art and animation to add to a narrators impact when telling a story. The images serve as powerful exclamation marks on the narrators words to tell a truly impactful story.

This could be used in higher year levels as well as mature middle years levels to cover the difficult topic of bullying. This can then be used as inspiration for the students own creativity and using many different modes to express a story.

Week 7

It is extremely important that teachers and students be able to interact. A teacher must be able to support a student in many different ways in order to make sure a student can reach their full potential. One way of doing this is to have an open, online area of discussion for students to interact with each other but to also ask the teacher questions. Such thing exists in Edmodo, which is explained in this video:

It also offers teachers the ability to find resources from other teachers around the world that they find useful.

Another resource is the My Storybook website. This allows students to create a story book online with their own drawings and pre-existing stickers and items as well. This would help tremendously with developing narrative writing.

Education Bookshop Mt Waverley Link Educational - Link Educational Supplies

Link Educational Bookshop is a really great shop in Mt Waverley that has lots of resources for teacher to find to use in class rooms for various ages. As well as a physical shop, they have an online website with links to what they also offer at the bookshop, such as story time every Thursday (aimed at pre school ages but they are welcome to every age) which I think is really great for children who may not go to a primary school just yet or even younger children, they can listen to stories, learn, socialise as well, be part of a community. I also thought it was cool that on their website they have a section for book reviews, expert advice and book of the month.

One book I remember from primary school is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. I remember so vividly watching the teacher turn the pages, counting all the fruits together as a class and I enjoyed how simple yet joyful and engaging the pictures in the book are. Now that being older and thinking back to that book, it really teaches children about counting, weekdays, that apples, pears, plums, strawberries and oranges are all fruits, and I remember it goes through all the junk food the caterpillar eats and it gets a sore stomach from overindulging - so it’s like teaching children if you eat a lot of junk/unhealthy foods it won’t be good for you - and maybe children won’t realise they are being taught this as they are reading the book, but it’s like unintentional teaching in a sense. And I think that’s one thing I really loved about the book, it very subtly teaches children about all those things but it still stays as a classic children’s story book that children still to this day love.
