Below are seven chilling examples of things only humans do.

1. Create Weapons Capable of Ending All Life

Humans alone have developed weapons with the power to annihilate entire civilizations and ecosystems in minutes. Nuclear bombs, engineered viruses, and chemical agents are designed for domination and obliteration. No other species has created tools with the potential to erase all life on Earth, including its own.

2. Destroy Their Own Habitat for Profit

We are the only species that knowingly degrades the very environment we need to survive. From deforestation and ocean acidification to air pollution and climate change, humans have turned their own planet into a ticking time bomb. Entire ecosystems are sacrificed for short-term gain, despite clear scientific warnings about long-term consequences.

3. Commit Genocide

Humans have carried out the systematic extermination of entire groups based on ethnicity, religion, or ideology. From the Holocaust to Rwanda to the Uyghur camps in China, genocide is a uniquely human atrocity (meticulously organized, ideologically fueled, and often state-sanctioned). It reflects a horrifying ability to dehumanize and erase on a massive scale.

4. Torture for Pleasure, Punishment, or Power

Unlike other species that may kill or fight to survive, humans have invented intricate methods to prolong suffering: electrocution, waterboarding, psychological torture, and countless medieval devices designed solely to inflict pain. Torture is used for revenge, coercion, or even entertainment, as seen in ancient Rome and beyond.

5. Deliberately Lie on a Global Scale

Humans manipulate entire populations through misinformation, propaganda, and the control of media. Lies can start wars, sway elections, or rewrite history. Entire societies have been built, and destroyed (on manufactured realities). Language, storytelling, and the internet make deception a global force.

6. Hold Animals Captive for Entertainment

From circuses to marine parks, humans are the only species that captures intelligent, sentient animals and forces them to perform for entertainment. Elephants, orcas, primates, and others suffer psychological and physical harm in captivity, all for the sake of ticket sales and amusement.

In the early hours of December 3, 1984, the city of Bhopal, India, was engulfed by a toxic cloud that would become one of the worst industrial disasters in history. At the heart of the tragedy was a pesticide plant owned by Union Carbide Corporation, where years of cost-cutting and safety negligence had created a ticking time bomb. Critical safety systems were inoperative. Warning alarms were turned off. The tanks holding lethal methyl isocyanate gas were overfilled and poorly maintained.

When water entered one of these tanks, a violent chemical reaction released 40 tons of deadly gas into the air. Within hours, thousands of people choked to death in their sleep. Survivors described the air as burning their eyes and lungs. Many collapsed on the streets trying to flee. Mothers awoke to find their children lifeless beside them.

The final death toll is still disputed, but estimates range from 15,000 to over 20,000 lives lost, with half a million more suffering long-term effects: blindness, birth defects, cancer, and chronic respiratory issues. The aftermath was marked by corporate evasion and government inaction. Union Carbide never fully cleaned the site, leaving toxic waste to poison the groundwater to this day.

During the Spanish Inquisition, torture was commonly used to extract confessions from those accused of heresy. One gruesome device was the wheel over fire. A victim was tied to a large wooden wheel, which was then suspended over burning coals. As the wheel turned, parts of the body were scorched, while others were crushed against the frame. The torture was slow, agonizing, and intended to cause both physical and psychological torment.

Two of the most horrific methods used included the strappado, where victims were hung by their wrists behind their backs and dropped suddenly to dislocate the shoulders, and the rack, a frame with rollers that stretched the body, often to the point of tearing ligaments and breaking bones.

The Abu Ghraib torture scandal refers to a series of human rights abuses committed by U.S. military personnel against detainees at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq during the early 2000s, primarily between late 2003 and early 2004. The prison, already notorious under Saddam Hussein's regime, became the site of horrific treatment after it was taken over by U.S. forces following the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

American soldiers, mostly military police and intelligence officers, were photographed and documented engaging in systematic abuse, humiliation, and torture of Iraqi prisoners. Detainees were:

Stripped naked, beaten, and kept in painful "stress positions"

Hooded and subjected to sensory deprivation

Sexually humiliated, including forced nudity, simulated sex acts, and threats of rape

The scandal sparked global outrage and severely damaged U.S. credibility. Although some low-ranking soldiers were court-martialed and imprisoned, critics argued that higher-level military and political leaders escaped accountability. The Abu Ghraib abuses became emblematic of the failures of U.S. policy during the War on Terror and a symbol of the dangers of unchecked power in wartime detention.

We should never forget that those in the military, law enforcement, intelligence agencies, private contractors, and border patrol are public servants. They are entrusted with responsibility, justice, and the protection of human dignity. When that trust is betrayed, as it was at Abu Ghraib, the damage ripples far beyond the prison walls: eroding global faith in democratic ideals, inflaming violence, and sowing deep cynicism at home and abroad. Remembering these atrocities is not about shaming a nation but about demanding accountability, transparency, and the moral courage to ensure it never happens again. It is a stark reminder that institutions authorized to use force must be watched closely, because when oversight fails, abuse can take root and spread. It is every citizen’s duty in a free society to keep a watchful eye on these institutions, to question authority, and to demand justice when trust is broken. Silence and complacency are not neutral. They are complicity. .

Killing the Voices We Claim to Protect

The Kent State Massacre occurred on May 4, 1970, at Kent State University in Ohio, during a student protest against the U.S. invasion of Cambodia, which had been announced by President Nixon just days earlier. The protest was part of a broader wave of national anti-war demonstrations as public opposition to the Vietnam War intensified.

Most of the students gathered that day were unarmed and non-violent, exercising their constitutional right to protest. Some minor acts of vandalism had occurred in the days before, including the burning of the campus ROTC building, but on May 4, the demonstrators were largely peaceful. The Ohio National Guard had been deployed to the campus to control the unrest.

During the protest, guardsmen moved to disperse the crowd, using tear gas. As students retreated and regrouped, tensions escalated. Without warning, 28 guardsmen opened fire, firing 67 rounds in 13 seconds. Four students were killed. Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer, and William Schroeder. Nine others were wounded. Two of those killed were simply walking to class and not involved in the protest.

The shootings shocked the nation. A photograph of a young woman crying over Jeffrey Miller’s body became a defining image of the era. The massacre sparked a nationwide student strike and led to the closure of hundreds of campuses. No members of the National Guard were convicted. The Inverted Savior: Religion and the Machinery of Oppression

Karl Marx’s claim that religion is “the opium of the people” reflects his view that religion serves both as a comfort in suffering and a tool of social control. Rather than condemning personal faith, Marx criticized the role religion plays in maintaining systems of economic and political oppression.

According to Marx, religion arises from material conditions (specifically, from a world marked by inequality, poverty, and exploitation). In such a world, religion provides emotional relief. Like opium, it dulls the pain of life under a harsh system by offering meaning, community, and hope. It frames suffering as part of a divine plan and promises justice or reward in an afterlife. This, Marx argued, distracts people from the real causes of their suffering: class inequality and systemic injustice.

More than just a coping mechanism, Marx saw religion as a tool used by ruling classes to uphold their power. By sanctifying the status quo, and claiming kings rule by divine right or that poverty is noble, religion discourages resistance. It teaches obedience, patience, and humility rather than questioning authority or striving for structural change. In this way, it becomes a stabilizing force that helps preserve existing hierarchies.

Religious institutions, in Marx’s view, often align with political and economic elites, consciously or unconsciously promoting values that benefit the powerful. This makes religion a form of ideological control, turning the focus away from injustice in this world toward salvation in the next. It shifts blame from oppressive systems to individual morality or “sin.”

For Marx, true liberation meant confronting and changing the material conditions that gave rise to religion in the first place. In a just, classless society, he believed, the need for religion would fade as people gained real control over their lives.
