More than 300 faculty, staff, students, and members of the community joined the discussion about the movement for Black lives, this moment in history, and ways to organize and take action. IOP Resident Fellow F'19 LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter Fund, facilitated the conversation featuring Alicia Garza, co-founder of Black Lives Matters, Atty. Rukia Lumumba, People’s Advocacy Institute, Ash-Lee Henderson, Highlanders, and Jessica Byrd, Political Advisor and Stacey Abrams' Deputy Campaign Manager. Teach-ins originated in the 1960s with the war in Vietnam and continued to be a format used through the 1970s and 1980s to facilitate conversations surrounding the environmental, women’s, and anti-nuclear movements. This Summer Teach-In series was developed to help members of our community gain understanding and perspective during this historic moment.
