Peter had gotten good at pretending.
Pretending the apartment didn't feel too quiet.
Pretending the city wasn't painfully loud.
Pretending that every stranger who smiled at him wasn't someone he used to know.
Then you walked into the coffee shop.
He looked up when the bell above the door chimed and there you were. Exactly the same.
You laughed at something your friend said, reached into your pocket for money, and thanked the cashier with the same smile that used to make Peter forget what he was saying.
And he couldn't help but let his chest tighten.
Because he knew you. But you didn't know him.
Not anymore atleast and he had almost said your name.
Instead, he stared into his coffee until it went cold.
You noticed him looking. His gaze being too deep for casual.
"Do I... know you?" Such a simple question.
One Peter had dreamed about hearing for months. He imagined telling you everything. The late-night walks. The rooftop talks. Every promise.
Every "I'll always find you."
He smiled . Small. Polite. Casual.
You nodded with an apologetic smile before leaving.
The little bell rang again.
That night, Spider-Man saved six people. Stopped two robberies. And even caught one car before it hit a family crossing the street.
And New York cheered per usual. But never her.Phones pointed toward the sky.
But this time, someone yelled, "Spider-Man! You're the best!
Peter smiled beneath the mask.
No one noticed the tears already drying there.
The hardest part wasn't fighting villains.
It was walking past the people he loved.
And letting them live happy lives that no longer had room for him. Maybe that was what being Spider-Man really meant.
Even if it meant no one could save you.
"Maybe this really was a brand new day. It just wasn't one Peter Parker got to be part of."
