Interlude
Footsteps approached. Daphne then came into focus.
Without saying a word, she rolled up her sleeve, lowered to the floor with a rustle of clothes, took Nicolas’ head into her hand and pressed the bared wrist to his mouth.
“Drink.“ she then said briskly. “You are leaving. Say no word until you are outside and the Lord will have you leave without obstacle.“

“I will get my strength back, that is a promise” Nicolas meant every word. Blessed with the strength of ages he wasn’t but he knew everything there was to know on how much he could take. Pain had been a faithful companion. Bleed, not allowed to feed. He knew them well.
“If what you say is true and I am to walk from this charming accommodation, I will feed the moment I get out. I won’t drink from one who kept me prisoner here. Spare me the charity speech” finding strength from pain was something Nicolas also remembered. “Now, do you mind letting go of this rough play? I tend to like it in a very, very different context”
As expected and perhaps intended, Daphne let go instantly- repulsed- when Nicolas spoke those profane words. She let out a low hiss of discontent and moved away from him. “Stay here.“ she then said impatiently as she walked away and back up into the room that lead to the chapel.
