#As a writer one of the most dramatic moves you can ever make is to bring your character up to the one line they said #they’d never cross and then make them cross it #But in order for the move to really hit home—to really pay off—the reason why the character crosses the line has to be compelling #This moment in TIOM is exactly that kind of crossroads for Gabrielle #and it’s so evocative because it is absolutely EARNED #You see Gabrielle follow Xena and become increasingly immersed in this life of violence #At first she only fights to defend herself and others who can’t defend themselves #then she fights to defend Xena #then she fights in wars for ideas and people she may never even personally meet #then she kills because sometimes the Greater Good requires it #but none of it ever sits well with her #and in fact the more and more she gives in to the brutality the harder it becomes for her to live with herself #Being party to Crassus’s execution is the final straw #She just can’t do it anymore #So she tries to devote herself to Eli’s Way of Peace #She tries to toe the line between her devotion to Xena and Xena’s cause and her own belief in pacifism #But in the end she can’t do it #The universe that she inhabits requires that she choose: #Xena or Peace #—and she chooses Xena because ultimately that is the thing she loves most #And once she makes that choice she can never go back #She’s changed forever #Great great character development [via @youstartedoutrandom]
