i know the popular theory is that it wears its victims skin and just kinda… schloughs up in there and ends up stretching and warping their skin as a result. but something doesn’t add up. one of their cosmetics is of a person who played the big bad wolf in a play, but when you look at the head of the cosmetic, under the snout you can see an actual wolf skull, which wouldn’t make sense if the unknown was just wearing that person’s skin & clothes (it’s also very… meaty for a regular old wolf costume). plus, we know how it kills its victims, and it doesn’t involve desiccating them, it just absorbs people completely, bones, skin and all. assuming this isn’t just how they eat their meals, i think what the unknown actually does is essentially absorb other beings’ DNA, and then mimics the cellular structures of its victims, albeit imperfectly. much like the thing from… the thing lol. that’s why it can conjure a wolf’s skull where there is none. it likely consumed an actual wolf before and just reconstructed what it learned from absorbing it, even though the wolf costume itself wouldn’t have a wolf skull inside of it. the unknown wouldn’t bother making the distinction, because why would it care as long as its good enough to lure in victims after psychologically weakening them with its chemicals/venom/hormones/whatever the fuck UVX actually is (which is honestly a superior hunting device than its ramshackle disguises tbh)? this is assuming the unknown is even biological and not just completely supernatural, in which case they wouldn’t need peoples’ skin to inhabit. they could exist however they want, and is just mimicking humans purely to fuck with us (they would).
