I read first chapters for a living (proofreading + line editing). Here are 5 real patterns I see CONSTANTLY that quietly kill reader immersion, see if any of these are hiding in your WIP:

The "as you know" info dump a character explains something both people already know, just for the reader's benefit. Readers feel it instantly.

Adverb overload "she said angrily, walking quickly" instead of showing anger through action.

Head-hopping mid-scene jumping POV without a scene break, so we don't know whose thoughts we're in.

The filter word trap "she saw," "she felt," "she noticed" distancing us from the moment instead of just showing it.

Dialogue tag pile-up "he exclaimed," "she interjected," "he retorted" when "said" would vanish into the page.

None of these mean you're a bad writer. They mean you're too close to the draft to see them which is what editors are for.

You spent months (or years) creating your story… don’t let small mistakes stop readers from falling in love with it.
