In Context:

Had to block someone on Discord because I talked to them about my novel and while I got suspicious "AI response" vibes, I found through snooping they're a real author from Australia and they didn't use AI (supposedly). They wanted to read my novel even though I'm only 15k in and it's a rough draft before the rough draft.

I thought "that seems fine. I'll just make a copy of my work and emboss it (I use Ellipsus)" so I sent them the link. Only after that did they tell me "oh by the way, I charge for my services. We can work it out with your budget."

Rather than, you know, telling me up front before I went through all those hoops.

Hell, I don't even know HOW they got my discord name as we weren't in any servers together

Beta reading should always be free. If you want to charge, become an editor.
