Mummers parade in Philly
There are perks to the new site: being close to Monument Square, near lots of new shops, AND Corn hole on our work patio. Not bad.
Another week, another good-bye party. Our publisher Mike OâSullivan is leaving after more than 20 years with The Record/The Saratogian.
Iâm hoping this is the last party like this for a while...
Profits
This is not what you want to read from someone at corporate after half of your newsroom and sports department has been laid off or taken a buyout:
"...thanks to your efforts and despite significant headwinds in print advertising, we had a successful year and exceeded our profit goals for the year. "

The Record will be moving to a new location in Troy, effective March 2.
A full newsroom today for a meeting and celebration of editor Lisa Lewis' birthday. :)
Oh, thanks for that clarification.

I've worked here for 10 years and I've always wanted to know what was in this vault/safe at The Record. I guess Spring Cleaning came a bit early this year.
Newsroom Fridge
Newsroom log 2.3-2014 - Ironically, on these freezingly-snowy days of the Earth year we were finally able to take out a Lean Cuisine which had attached itself to the freezer part of the mini-fridge. This also means the icy growth that had manifested has stopped and we can close the fridge with no problem.

How can we stop racism? By better education? By enforcing laws? By outing racists on the Internet and then campaigning to have them fired from their jobs? This is how one group of activists have gone about the problem with their Tumblr site Getting Racists Fired. Getting Racists Fired is where oeople can out racists by submitting their toxic and dumbass Facebook posts, tweets, comments and images to the site, where they are shared in a bid to shame the individual. The site then urges its followers to write and phone the individualâs employer to have them fired for clowning themselves in public with their racist social media pollution⌠To this end, they have posted details of what to say when phoning a company about a racist employee: Hereâs a script of what you can say while calling employers âHello can I speak to a manager on duty? I have a complaint to make about one of your employeesâ âYes hello, my name is ______ and Iâve been seeing some very disturbing and disgusting racist comments coming from one of your works. Their name is ____â â I know that your business is not one that would condone such...
So this is what's been going on on Tumblr while I've been gone...
The Newsroom Before A Storm
From my colleague Kevin Moran who has been in the biz I bit longer than I:
"Just not the same in the newsroom the day before a big storm is supposed to hit since Joe Hack retired. I miss his snow bomb sign and the story about this could be the mother of all storms. I DO NOT miss having to climb on the roof with Jan Shields and a hockey stick to wipe the snow off the satellite dish so all copy makes it into the feed."
My point of view - I am not a fan of the obligatory weather stories but I know people want to know so therefore it's our job to write it.
Overall, I'm a big fan of our new system in which I get faxes and even voicemail via email. And then, sometimes, something like this will happen where a fax is upside down.
I wonder if this can be taken as a metaphor for journalism, in general......Nahh. We'll stick with just the fax.
I actually still use these occasionally for work. A lot of people who have unlisted numbers now - on sites like 411.com - did *not* necessarily have unlisted numbers in the phone book. Very useful.
Chelsea's last week at The Record. You know what that means...Cake!

Adventures with calling the U.S. House of Representatives' switchboard
(Because the Congresswoman I'm trying to get a hold of is new and not yet listed in the online directory).
Following a five minute wait on hold, I reach an operator:
Operator: "U.S. House of Representatives Switchboard."
Me: "Hi. My name is Danielle Sanzone. I'm a reporter with The Record newspaper in Troy, NY. How're you doing?"
Operator: Long Pause. "U.S. House of Representatives Switchboard."
Me: "Hi. I'm looking for Elise Stefanik." (I may have mispronounced her name a little)
Operator: "Whose office is she in?"
Me: "She was just elected to Congress."
Operator: Long Pause.
Me: It's spelled S-T-E...
Operator: "Oh, I got it. She's new. Hold please...."
(Given that this Congresswoman is the longest yet elected and that fact has been in the news for the past two months, my faith not yet restored in national government)
It's a sad day in New York State.
