I turn a year older today. Â This is what humans say, followed by, I feel older, I feel great, or I feel like cereal, please pass the milk, as if it is a sudden thing, turning older. I turn older...now. You know this shit didnât just creep in from outside and ask to borrow your time. Itâs been coming, it was always coming - watch a Tommy Lee Jones movie - that dude counts the days and weeks and months, one ant, on a hill, at a time.Â
My birthday is always two weeks after new years, always! So, although I celebrate New Years, my true new year is always my birthday - which Iâm quite thankful for, tucked away in a little mouse-bed in its mouse house waiting for me to walk in and find every January. Iâm lucky, if I had New Yearâs resolutions and then like a second set  for a May birthday, I would just snap. Sorry Mayborns, Juneborns, Stormcorns.
The year marker of my own life is the place where I reflect on the whos I ams and the wheres I ams goings, and the whats haves Is dones and the whyâs my stomach just a little baby bit bigger? This last query is followed by weeping. The weeping is followed by eating. Then I run furiously. Then I fight my reflection. Then I sew my shadow back on. Then I call somebody up to see if they want to have a hangout-highfive competition out by the tarpits. We make circles of the dust, doing donuts on our mopeds âtil sunset, our silhouettes majestic against the Arizona skyâs purples and blues and oranges. We wake at dawn, and thumb slice tangerines to cure our weary minds and look into the bright day ahead of us, fearlessly. Nitehawk says that the days change into nights for him, that the oxen can make it until the next nightâs moon without water. With a little more rest we can -Â
The day of your birth, like all days, can feel just like yesterday. Todays feel like yesterdays, unless you fell in love yesterday, those todays feel like a mountain top. Post love-fall todays are a shiny new future with that new future smell, and that new future transmission. You shower cleaner, you shave closer, your body is newborn, entirely innocent.
I am not newly in love, so today feels a lot like yesterday. But, today will still be my day - mâday. And this simplicity about birthdays I love. Some people hate birthdays. I donât compute. Itâs self celebration time! Itâs a goddamn day carved out of stone on a calendar just for you. Make that shit a diamond!Â
What, youâre a little tired and youâre feeling a little over it, and the past year isnât every single thing you needed it to be? Buck up, buttercup. Brush your teeth and hit the streets. Climb atop your cake mounds, on your day of days, and vision quest the positives:Â
1. Candy doesnât stop. Ever. Itâs a one way train, and itâs always changing. You didnât know youâd ever like black liquorice. Wait, you still donât? The gummi bears of old are the Whatchamacallits of tomorrow. Maybe everythingâs a sour thing now, so long as it makes you smile.
2. Wrinkles are natural. So is weight gain and weight loss. Â Plastic surgery is a choice, the wrong choice. Your body is a wonderland, I know mine is. Exercise. Turn fat to muscle. Turn muscle to milk. Turn milk to milkshakes. Make your milkshake bring people places, yards, bars, cars, stars.
3. Masterbate, by candlelight. Make it special. You on you. Listen to Prince. Most of his songâs were written when he was looking at himself in the mirror. True story, in the bathroom. Listen to Cream. Tell yourself to get on top of yourself. Refer to yourself as us. Go to the wire. Awesome, right? Maybe plan on listening to a lot more Prince this year. Everything you do is success. Cream. Shaboogy. Bop. Â
4. Give yourself five minutes of uninterrupted eye contact, probably because you just listened to a lot of or are still listening to Prince. Put your eyebrows up. Breathe. Take it all in. This is your face. Shake its hand. Twitch the nose. Make a squirrel face. What? Youâre in the mood for hazelnut? Now youâre thinking like a squirrel. Goal accomplished.Â
5. Shower. Shower forever. Make it long. Steamy. Clean everything. Itâs not a new day, itâs a new year, your year. This oneâs all you baby, make it work. Shimmy in there. Get shiny in there, and then pop out of that motherfucker like youâve never popped out of a shower in your life - do a little screwloose hop 360 over the tub and onto the foot towel. Did you see that? youâll ask yourself. Follow this with an overhead self high five. Donât pull a muscle. Birthday - so far so GREAT!Â
6. Liquidize fruit. Make the smoothie of smoothies. Donât carboload today. Anything can happen. You wanna be light as a feather. You wanna tumbleweed through any situation that arises. If you could only become a vapour, or maybe have a body malleable enough to slippy-slide under doorjams. Â Woah, Iâd have to really rethink this list. Iâd prolly have to rob a few places in the meantime in betweentime.Â
7. Answer phone calls. Let the love shine in. Youâll get an awful lot of texts. But the lovers - theyâll call, and theyâll sing the sweet stuff. Absolutely make these calls more important than that big work call. Fuck work, itâs birth time. Still go to work, itâs your day, itâs like a free pass. Knock the water cooler over. Partytime.Â
8. Buy yourself something nice. Whatâs your thing? What makes it happen for you? The candy from number 1? Obvs. What else? A new shiny layer of jeans? I went to a bookstore and got all feely with all them words. I bought four books. Itâs like a down payment on my brain for the next month. Books to anticipate are my little slice of future. Find your slice of future.Â
9. Invite people out in celebration of a new you, a better you, the same you. Youâve already been at it all day, now itâs time to hear it from others. Place yourself in the warm embrace of your loved ones, get all wrapped up in that shit. Make yourself the burrito filling to the familial burrito of your nearest dearests. Get hugs. Hug back. Talk shop. Bench press. Donât forget the guacamole.
10. Ice. Cream. Cake. Whale shaped. Where the vanilla and the chocolate are separated by a row of crunchy cold sprinkles. Â The fringed border whip creamâs all frozen, and the Gel letters that spell out your name are all gelly. Â Have you had this? Do you remember? Itâs your fucking birthday, why arenât you having this cake!?! If your friends donât bring you this cake, exact revenge. Â Slow, devastating revenge, revenge that takes years to perfect, and crushes them entirely. Revenge that brings them all to their knees, collectively crying, WHY? OK, if it starts to make you feel bad, just start a blog, and see if anyone gets to number 10 and cares about you at all, on your own fucking birthday! (Endless sobbing)Â
And thatâs how you get ice cream birthday cake at your birthday party!
