#dashes

An em dash (—, named because it's the size of the letter M) is the proper typographical way to indicate a pause—like this—in a sentence.

In contrast, an en dash (–) is used to indicate ranges, such as 8 a.m.–9 p.m.

A normal hyphen (-) is used to conjoin words, such as anti-theft.

While en dashes are somewhat pedantic, em dashes help give a pause proper weight and prevent the reader from accidentally reading the pause as a compound word.

The story opens with Reggie pursuing Betty, who is pursuing Archie, who is pursuing Veronica, who is pursuing Alex, who is with Jane. Jane leaves Alex for Reggie as Veronica decides to settle for Archie and Archie decided he has to settle for Betty and Betty decided she has to settle for Reggie with Alex now going after Veronica. Jughead is the dispassionate narrator.
