When I was a young painter David Hockney kindly came to my studio to see my paintings. Naturally I was nervous but he said, "I can see that you are going to be a very good painter by the way you use the color yellow. It is the hardest color to use and only Van Gogh used it well." I remember those words every time I use the color yellow and last year I made this little painting of his studio as a memento. My favorite photo of my dad and mum. It is the only image that I've ever seen of them kissing. My mother found this in a fifties magazine last year in Havana, Cuba (where they had eloped shortly before the revolution).

Picasso's Villa in Cannes. For twelve years I have been working on a vast painting which describes all the ground floor rooms that Picasso was using as studios.
