knock knock knock – It was a very heartless knock, almost nonexistent if he wasn’t a light sleeper, but any noise at all during his midafternoon nap was basically cannon fire. What also didn’t help was the knocks awoke his dog as well, who immediately started on barking. He ignored it the first time, hoping it’d go away, but again, there it was, and the dog barked even quicker–with a long, slow sigh, the man found his feet, and a shirt off the ground, “hold on.” He drawled across the house, as he slowing made his way tot he door, pulling the shirt over his shoulder’s as he did so before opening the door, “where’s the god damn fire? Jesus.” 

‘‘Oh shoot, I’m sorry. Did I wake you?’‘ Dahlia asked but then almost facepalming herself for asking such a stupid question. Unless he always looked this haggard and wandered around town half-dressed, it was obvious that she’d woken her parents neighbor from a nap. She snapped out of her mental debate, forcing her eyes to meet his before they would start wandering down his bare chest and raked her brain trying to remember why she was here again. Then it hit her. The gas leak. 

‘‘I was wondering if I could stay with you for a very short while? I think there’s a gas leak over at our house and the fire department suggested I stay out of the place until they arrive. I usually wouldn’t mind staying outside but let’s just say I’m not really a friendly face anymore,’’ she added, immediately regretting her last words. She was hoping no questions would be asked where she would have to explain that she’d become a social pariah and that every mother in town steered their husband and children away from Dahlia Romano. The stranger most definitely did not need to know that.
