I trace destruction.“ So reads the inscription on the more than four feet high stone at Björketorp. With its two flanking attendants Björketorp Stone is one of the country's most powerful rune stone monuments. The inscription is from the late600's AD. There is also a burial ground with two types of stone circles (domarringar and stensättningar) and standing stones.

I find it SO interesting when you can see exactly how a word was mistranslated from Swedish to English! This is the Swedish version given by Wikipedia:

Ärofulla runors rad dolde jag här, mäktiga runor. Rastlös av arghet, död genom list skall den bli som bryter detta. Jag spår fördärv.

Spår as a noun does mean trace, but that’s clearly wrong here, it’s not a noun in this sentence, but a form of the verb spå (meaning to foretell, to divine). I trace … would be Jag spårar …, and make no sense here.

The original post is 15 years old so it is also ancient history by now, but my translation would be something like:

Honourable runes’ row I hid here, powerful runes. Restless by arghet, dead through cunning shall the one be who breaks this. I foretell ruin.

Of course, that is still a translation of a translation because the stone is from the 7th century and written in a very old form of Norse.

Haidz runo runu, falh'k hedra ginnarunaz. Argiu hermalausz, … weladauþe, saz þat brytz. Uþarba spa.
