Headcanon. Ercole is a cat(fish)boy and that's why he supposedly "Can't swim" in that junior novel but also hates getting wet. it's the cat(fish) in him. you can also summon him by going, "Vespspspspspspspspspspsp"

I have this cute but out there headcanon that's truly just out there. So I just it's sea monster related. And I thought that somehow Ercole was maybe a late bloomer of sorts. Part human part sea monster. He can be a sea monster it's just taking him a while since the environment he's in is bad for his mental health and makes him nervous and panicked a lot and reject his sea monster self. But I guess around winter time while he's still there in Portorosa he maybe gets help and figures himself out. Also, I like to think that Guido(please god let that be how I spell his name) and Ciccio, are also late-blooming sea monsters. I like to think Portososa is full of late bloomers or half human half sea monster kids and folks. (I would make so many LGBTQ allegories if only I knew how..) So yeah that's all I got..
