âNo thank you,â Laurie shook her head. âI donât know where they got those apples. Itâs a stupid game anyways.â She could see it being some part of a plot to get her back to the community. Disguising drugs as a fun party game. It was the kind of thing theyâd tell sermons about.
When the girl said she didnât know where they got the apples, it just reconfirmed to him that they were unsafe. To Devinâs mind, they might as well have been dripping with poison the way the apple in Snow White had been. âYeah, youâd think after centuries theyâd invent some kinda new game for kids to play, update it with fidget spinners or some other shit like that.â
flipsidexlaviniaâ:
âOnly if requested, baby,â she giggled, rubbing her hands over her pigtails and she moved further into her room, settling herself on the bed, patting the spot next to her. âCâmon in. Tell me a bit about yourself.â

Was this allowed? He still wasnât sure what all the rules here were, but hesitantly took a step into the girlâs room, looking around as if a venomous plant might jump out at him. So far, so calm. âUhh, Iâm Devin... I got here like a week ago, and Iâm not that great at talking about myself. Whatâs your name?â
taraxclarkeâ:
âHave you ever been so tired that no amount of coffee in the world will fix it? Thatâs me right now.â
Every day of my life, Devin thought. âYeah. I know the feeling well.â
lolaspalmerâ:
The guy seemed a bit flat but he was cute enough so Lolaâs attention was kept a little. Great, actual work. âOh, okay.â Ugh, why couldnât she just lie here and do nothing for the next year? These patients had it so good. âI can go and chase that up for you, it sounds important.â
"Could you? I donât wanna be a bother, but Iâm supposed to take 'em daily,â Devin shrugged. Sure heâd started on the meds a week ago, and he supposed a missed day wouldnât matter too much at this stage, but still. If he was getting treatment best see it through.

Even though it was the middle of the day. And the boy fucking hated his room during the night. He had no problem waltzing in there to get his stuff or even sit a few hours at his desk during the day to avoid group therapy. Softly whistling he strolled through the hallway, taking the second door on his right into his room. Although it wasnât HIS room anymore⌠His eyes widened seeing someone unpack their bags on the empty bed besides his.Â
He knew this day could come one day⌠He had spent an entire year without the bother of having to share his room with another patient. Something he thanked God for on a weekly basis. With his insomnia and the fact he woke up screaming around 4am nine out of ten nights, he had dreaded the moment someone would occupy the empty bed. âH-Hi~â He said taking a small step back. âAre you sure you are in the right room?â He asked practically knowing the answer..!
"Uh, yeah,â Devin nodded, feeling very much the interloper in this situation. âThey assigned me to this one.â Not sure of what to do with himself, in a spur of the moment idea he stood up and outstretched his hand for Charlie to shake. âIâm Devin.â He felt awkward and dumb doing it, but might as well start on a decent note, right? Small talk was almost painful for him but there would be no way around it until they got to know each other better. âYou been in here long?âÂ
olivermeyerâ:
âGermany, born and raised, but moved few years ago to Californiaâ he nodded. Usually people could easily tell that he was a foreigner, but maybe his accent was improving with time. That was bound to happen soon or later after all.Â
âI guess Halloween is a nice excuse to pretend to be what you really are deep downâ he shrugged slightly. One could tell a lot about a person just by observing the kind of outifts and fancy dresses they would choose for the holiday.
"Iâm from California too,â Devin said, a small spark of recognition in his eyes. âReal far up north though, you probably havenât heard of it.âÂ
âYeah,â he said with a chuckle, not sure if the other was making a joke or not here. It sounded like one. âAll Iâve done the past few years is give out some candy to kids who come to the house. Thatâs it. Itâs a silly kidsâ holiday, if you ask me.âÂ
Halloween Ask Meme đ || ââ where is all the candy i just bought? â
"Uhhh...Iâm not sure?â Had he spotted a bag of candy in the garden anywhere? Devin wasnât sure. Either way, he tried his best not to look guilty, cause he often had that look about him. âI havenât seen your candy, sorry. Maybe try, uh, the refreshments table? Someone couldâve put it there.â
Bright Eyes - Neely O'Hara
In the morning when you throw up water And your skin turns a pale, pale yellow Well, every day you lose more color Do you think that someone paints your mirror? So you think that things sound different At the time when you speak Well, there are visions much clearer than these blurs that you see And like Neely OâHara you swallow your sleep And wake up in the morning To find you are not who you used to be You donât recognize the behavior Or the spelling of your name and the shape that is in the mirror Well, youâd swear it is not the same And like Neely OâHara You swallow your sleep and you really canât remember But you know you are not Think you are not No, you are not who you used to be
ââ aww, whereâs your halloween spirit? â
ââ Uhhh...â Devin glanced awkwardly at the guy dressed in a very flashy Elvis costume. He hadnât worn anything special himself, partly because he didnât have a costume nor did he have it in him to make one. Nor did he truly want to.Â
"Itâs on the inside, where it counts.â For a second he thought he was being clever, but then he realized it was lame, just like every other word that came out of his mouth.

DEVIN HAYES is a 20 year old PATIENT in the PSYCHIATRIC WARD. He has been diagnosed with OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER, OCD INDUCED EATING DISORDER and CLINICAL DEPRESSION. He looks a lot like Charlie Heaton.
MAYBE THEYâRE HIDING
They werenât the richest family, or the best family, his dad would always say, but they were a happy family. The Hayes patriarch, along with his wife and their five children, lived in a sleepy Northern California town where nothing much ever happened. And sure, the money was stretched because of the sheer amount of them, and often the siblings were put in charge of watching one another. But every now and then in moments like this, theyâd be taken out to a games arcade, and then Taco Bell, and the party of seven was as happy as could be. That is, until baby Sofia went missing.
WE HOPE THEY ARE PLAYING A GAME
It was Devin and his older brother who were tasked with looking after the 4 year old that afternoon, and the 7 and 9 year old boys thought they were equally up for the challenge. Truth be told, they werenât all that attentive that afternoon as little Sofia was digging for worms. One moment they were watching her dig, singing her little song, and the next minute, she just wasnât there anymore. Things went downhill very quickly after that. Seven years passed, and there was no word or sign of Sofia , though her parents held out hope no matter what. Eventually, the sheriffâs office had no choice but to declare her missing status as presumed dead, since there had been no leads in the case ever since she had disappeared. It affected the whole family and all of the siblings in different ways, but most intensely Devin. He blamed himself for it all, and started to hear voices around his early teens. Voices that told him to do menial tasks, this or that, and in exchange his sister would be returned safe.
BUT THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING
But no matter how many railroad tracks he crossed late at night, or counted into the early hours of the next school morning, bleary-eyed, nothing happened. Still, he felt compelled to do these things or face serious retribution. This compulsion led him to stop eating, believing that most food was poisoned or contaminated somehow. His parents and siblings grew concerned, but due to their own pressures and concerns, they did not do much about it. Eventually, Devin collapsed one evening while on his night shift at the local supermarket and went into seizures. Lack of food, sleep, and adequate care for himself had led to his system shutting down. His older siblings and parents were very concerned, and, not wanting to lose yet another Hayes, sent him to Brielle to get better.
Connections: None
Unfortunately, Devin is TAKEN!
olivermeyerâ:
âNo, I mean where I come from is not really so important as it is here so I never celebrated itâ he shrugged. Of course there were always those halloween themed parties, but Oliver never really took part in any of them, since he was not a party person either. âAnd you? Why donât you like it?â he asked, facing the unfamiliar face.
"Where do you come from?â Devin asked, hoping it wasnât too personal of a question. If the guy had a foreign accent of some sort, he hadnât noticed it. âOh, I donât mind Halloween, I suppose. Iâm just a little too old for trick or treating and apple bobbing and all that other kidsâ stuff.âÂ
Devin was moved to another room three weeks after arriving at Brielle â something about being two to a room, not allowing newbies to have a room just to themselves and so on and so forth. He had enjoyed the solitude of a room where the other bed was empty; now, it was occupied. The other guyâs stuff (Charlie, the sign outside the door had said) was already there, so it felt a bit like he was intruding when he set down his backpack and duffel bag full of clothes.
Heâd only finished unpacking all of his clothes and was now going through his other belongings when the door suddenly opened, causing Devin to jolt a bit out of surprise. âOh, uh, hi.âÂ

Lola looked up a few seconds later and relented, sighing to herself. She needed to pretend at least, right? She was just so, so sick of this place. âSorry.â She moved to pull herself upright, looking over at him. âWhatâs up?â
"Umm. I was supposed to get my meds directly from my therapist, they changed them up or something â his nameâs Dr. Tatum but he left already, so Iâm not sure where to go for them...â his voice drifted off at the end a little, wondering if she even cared.
olivermeyerâ:
âOh no dude, I am just watchingâ he shrugged and then paused for a second to reflect on what he had just said. Since english was not Oliverâs first language, he would often struggle to express himself. âSorry, that didnât come out right⌠I meant I donât do this whole Halloween thingâ he attempted to explain himself in a bit more informative manner.Â
That made Devin chuckle, a little awkwardly, at the same time moving out of the way so a girl behind them could come up and give a go at the apples. âYou donât do Halloween? Like, at all?â

âWell why not?â The nurse asked with a warm smile. âNot mine either really, Iâm no good at it.â

Devin failed to explain that he had no idea what kind of shared, communal bacteria the water might be crawling with âtapeworms, for all he knewâ so he would rather avoid it if possible. âDunno, never been good at it. Donât like apples much, either,â he simply shrugged.
Somehow he had ended up at the apple bobbing station set up in the garden, and next in line for it. âUh, you go right ahead,â Devin addressed the person behind him, âthis sorta thing isnât really my bag.â
