Rick’s writing is actually pretty problematic. I’m aware that people have been discussing this and this is my perspective on it and what I have gathered. Samirah (MCGA): Samirah probably has gotten the most discussion on how her character wasn’t written properly. First off, is her hijab. I don’t really think Rick wrote the concept of a hijab correctly. She took of her hijab went she took Magnus to Valhalla for the first time stating that Valhalla was like a second family to her. But she just met Magnus??? The other main thing is her arranged marriage with Amir. A lot of people were saying that it wasn’t depicted very well and not all Muslim families did arranged marriages anymore and that it’s changed with modern time. And the third thing isn’t directly related to Samirah but it’s very problematic. So Samirah said Allahu Akbar and explained that it meant God is greater and Magnus had a random thought that was along the lines of “I got a chill hearing that because terrorists say that before doing bad things and blowing up stuff” and like why would you even write that? That has NOTHING to do with what’s she saying and it feels like blatant racism. It’s also weird that she’s referred to by a westernized nickname like “Sam” instead of “Samirah” while white characters like Annabeth have the same amount of syllables and they don’t go by nicknames. Piper: I had seen a lot of people unhappy with how her Cherokee side was being portrayed. A lot of people had a problem with her braiding feathers in her hair because it was a harmful stereotype. (Edit: after some further research I found out: Native Americans don’t braid feathers directly into their hair. They wear feather headdresses. But the Cherokee typically don’t wear these feather war bonnets. Cherokee headwear consists of fabric turbans, roaches made out of stiff animal hair and otter caps). There are some other small things that are seen as bad or stereotypical Cherokee rep. Also the was Piper described her dad’s acting roles were weird. Like a “dashing Syrian terrorist?”. There were a few better ways to say that.
Lavinia: A lot of people said her Jewish representation was extremely inaccurate. Also a lot of people were saying that there was no need to bring up h*tl*r and that there should be more Jewish representation without tying it to him. It was also brought up that since Rick framed ww2 as a conflict between the big 3 kids, he didn’t really think about the inflictions that had on the holocaust, and it could be interpreted to holocaust denial.
there are definitely more racist and problematic parts that I didn’t get to. Another thing to note is that I am NOT Jewish, Cherokee, or Islamic. Although, I have seen these points and takes made by people who are Jewish, Cherokee, or Islamic.
As a WOC the racist parts and the way some women were portrayed really pisses me off, and I don’t want to do the same thing. So if in this rant I stated something wrong or disrespectful please tell me! I want this to be a safe space to civilly discuss and acknowledge harmful stereotypes, so please don’t use hateful terms. Please be mindful and respectful especially if you’re not Jewish, Cherokee, Islamic or a POC. And if someone is Jewish, Cherokee, or Islamic and they contribute information please don’t say they’re wrong, they probably know more about this than you and me.
