i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.
in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.
But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.
our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.
anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.
"A marriage ending isn't a failure at all. I spent eleven years with her. We were so in love that we couldn't image life apart from each other. We got our own place, adopted a dog, and supported each other through school. I thought if tow people loved each other enough the rest would fall into place, except... love isn't everything.
And I didn't want to believe that, but we were sitting in counseling one day, talking about our future and I realized we were describing two completely different lives. Where we'd live, what kind of life we wanted, what made us happy. And it hit me that- I love this woman and this woman loved me. And after eleven years of loss, grief, career changes, we were so deeply in love... but we weren't aligned. And I kept thinking 'We just need to try harder. We can find some compromise to make this work,' because that's what you're supposed to do when you love someone, right?
But the reality was, we had just become different people. Her trade school took her in one direction, my graduate degree in another and trying to force us back into who we were five years ago wasn't coming from a place of love. It was coming from a place of fear. Fear that, if this ended, it meant we wasted eleven years. But sitting there across from her, I realized: That's not how love works.
Those eleven years happened. They were real. The dog, our home, showing up for each other through grad school and trade school. I wouldn't change a single thing because loving someone doesn't mean you're meant to stay with them forever. And letting go doesn't erase what you had. We measure marriage by whether it lasts forever or not, but what if we measured it by whether it mattered?
What if we measured it by the love we gave, the life we built, and the people we became? Because love's job isn't to last forever, it's to help you become fully completely yourself, and sometimes the most loving thing you can do is give each other permission to be yourselves, separately. But the dog doesn't know were' divorced. He just gets two Christmases now."
Pulled this from this guy Preston Rakovsky's Instagram (@prestonrack) because it is a beautiful perspective on love, marriage, and relationships in general.
Three dozen medical experts say Trump ‘mentally unfit,’ should be removed from office with ‘greatest urgency’
Three dozen medical experts who believe President Donald Trump is “mentally unfit” to perform his duties have had a letter outlining their concerns submitted to the congressional record.
The 36 neurologists, psychiatrists and other mental health professionals said in the letter that they had seen “objectively observable” signs of serious medical concerns in Trump, including deterioration of cognitive function, grandiose and delusional beliefs, and severely impaired judgment and impulse control.
“Emphasizing that he presents a clear and present danger to our country and to the world,” the letter concludes, “it is our expert opinion that Donald J. Trump is mentally unfit to be the President of the United States, and that steps to remove him from office must be undertaken with the greatest urgency, with vital responsibilities on the shoulders of those in positions of leadership.”

May 5th is Red Dress Day, which brings awareness to Missing and/or Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit peoples.
These books discuss the violence and problems Indigenous people face, in different ways. Not all of these books are queer, but some of them are. Please check TW before reading.

does anyone else get annoyed by big booktok/booktubers constantly promoting massive overconsumption?
like no you do not need to buy every single book you've ever read or every single book merch that comes out? i understand wanting a home library but some of these creators need to GET A LIBRARY CARD or at least go to used/locally owned bookstores instead of only shopping at large corporations.
As an author? We really do want people with the means to be buying the books. Ideally from small local bookstores, or directly from the publisher.
In my experience, most booktubers do talk a lot about small local bookstores. Which ones are you watching that don't do that, and why are you continuing to give them attention?
Do you like reading books or not? Because if you don't like reading then by all means starve authors of their royalties by not buying books you like and want the next one of. Buy books. Buy them. Because the number one reason an author doesn't get asked to write another book is because the first one didn't sell enough copies. So if you want book two, three, four, etc, BUY THE FUCKING BOOK.
Authors don't have a union. We don't get to clock in and write and get paid hourly wages. We work entirely for free and then sell the end product for a lump sum and piddly royalties that are sometimes in the negatives. Authors on this fucking website have been talking about that for YEARS.
What exactly do you think authors live on? Do you know how many hours it takes to write a novel? Do you know how little authors get paid for those hours? I think if you broke it down it would be WELL below minimum wage.
Buy the damn book. Buy a physical copy. Because once you own a physical copy, it doesn't matter if it goes out of print, you still own it and can access it forever. Physical copies are superior in this way.
"overconsumption" does not apply to ART!!!!! Artists need patronage!!! That's our wages!!!! That's our bread and our rent!!!! Authors work on commission, and royalties are the best we've ever been able to do, the closest we've been able to get to getting ANY wages AT ALL. We don't HAVE a union!!! We all have to negotiate ALONE with the big publishers!!! We get paid PENNIES it is CRIMINAL!!!
How dare you fucking sit there and say we oughtn't be paid for our labour. How fucking DARE you!
On top of that, books aren’t made of plastic that would pollute the earth for centuries unlike cheap microtrendy clothes the discussions of which started the greater discourse of overconsumption in the 2020s

This happened at the annual White House Correspondents Dinner where the President dines with the journalists ostensibly covering the White House.
Currently, no injuries have been reported. Here is a video of Trump falling down when they try to evacuate him, because he is old and infirm and may die one day soon of natural causes.
