Getting Rid of Memories and the backstory of half-vampire children

Eight years ago, the King learned of a prophecy foretelling that a certain half-vampire would bring his reign to an end. Fearing the prophecy's fulfillment, he outlawed blood-mixing and issued a decree legalizing the killing of hybrids. Citizens of Holdstorna were permitted to report the whereabouts of hybrids and to deal with them personally by any means available. Vampires who provided proof of execution were entitled to a monetary reward. The hunters caught up with Obadiah's family quickly. Two of his sisters died from an axe blow, and the boy himself was taken alive to be sold later as an exotic creature. Only the youngest girl managed to escape the vampires' eyes, finding shelter in a cellar.

Obadiah was purchased by the blood merchant Boris Kramznich, who was intrigued by the boy's extrasensory abilities. Boris wanted to turn the boy into a living instrument that could be used to calculate trade deals, and to that end, he took Obadiah's eyes and completely broke his personality. Obadiah, later given the name the Blindman, became a willless puppet in the blood merchant's castle.

Like her brother the Blindman, the girl can predict the future. Her visions are hidden behind images that come to her in dreams. These images are sometimes very frightening, and at other times so tangled that even Sasha herself cannot make sense of them.

When her home was destroyed by opponents of hybrids, she fell into the hands of Alevtina Genevskaya, the head of a criminal cult. Alevtina raises the girl as her own daughter, but exploits her abilities for her own schemes.

Sasha lives in a shelter, from which she is only allowed out for rare walks. Her mother made this decision in order to protect the girl from vampire eyes and the corrupting influence of metropolitan society. Sasha's life indeed unfolds without physical danger, but the conditions of isolation and Alevtina's peculiar upbringing have shaped in her a strange perception of the world.

The resulting 'hybrids' come out underdeveloped, with most such creatures lacking more than half of their vital organs. Some, though capable of living longer than a single day, cannot even move.

A sick and tired mind desperately clings to any "happiness", even if it is fleeting. It seems to such a mind that any "happiness" will lead it to a normal life.

Sometimes Wojciech feels like he's ready to do anything to put himself out of pain.

Sylvia can be considered a truly exemplary resident of the capital. Her voluptuous figure, clad in blood-toned silk, is accented with cloying perfume and combined with her good manners – in other words, she possesses everything needed to capture the attention of high society. Furthermore, this young lady's financial standing allows her to deny herself nothing, whether it be an expensive piece of jewelry or a human life. Of course, she doesn't take the gold from her own purse – all these delights come to her from her dear daddy.

Mr. Celebrowsky is not as stable as it might seem. Sometimes his mental illness causes him to flourish, but at the same time, it makes him exceedingly unpredictable. One moment he is ready to throw himself into grandiose plans, the next he will zealously empty his apartment, deeming it too dirty.

In such episodes, he considers himself happy, although others can hardly call his condition "happiness." Moreover, "happiness" rarely leaves pleasant consequences behind.
