another thing that pisses me off in regards to the fandom's treatment of lyse by calling her a white saviour or saying that within the story she is unnecessary and useless because she didnt live as an ala mhigan, so therefore the role of leader should go to m'naago instead, is the fact that. well. the point is that she is disconnected from ala mhigo because she left. she has monologues about how she feels unfit to lead. there's so many quests where you get to see her being rejected by her own people or be violent towards her because she wasn't there to suffer like they did. this is something they constantly rub in her face! this is the entire point of her character! the disconnect!
ala mhigo was torn by garlean invasion, their entire people scattered and forced to leave to the rest of eorzea. there are so many displaced ala mhigans that LITTLE ALA MHIGO EXISTS, FULL OF ALA MHIGANS WHO COULD NOT LIVE WITHIN GRIDANIA OR UL'DAH

how can you look at lyse in the eye and see stormblood in a vacuum and not understand that the entire point of lyse becoming the face of the resistance is the fact that ala mhigo does not abandon her children, regardless of where they are and who they are? that she rejects this position of power over and over because she understands she's unfit to lead as someone who didn't fight for her own homeland?

this is why lyse is tied with hien, because he was born DURING garlean occupation. he has never seen a free doma, this is something they insist upon on his side of the story. they are linked because hien has never seen the country his father died for and yet he is here to continue the fight and ensure doma is liberated. its the exact same for lyse. hien's life hinged on the desire for freedom, if his own people didn't want to be free then he was going to kill himself because there is no point in him fighting for and existing as a symbol of freedom. both of them had their people acknowledge they're needed!

this is why yotsuyu is also important! why fordola is important! they are still, at the end of the day, daughters of their own countries who matter as much as anyone else who embodies the perfect upstanding citizen! it matters that yotsuyu is treated as doman (even after the questionable decision of giving her amnesia which just. feels like an easy "feel bad for her bc we couldn't figure out how to make a victim turned perpetrator seem empathetic"), because her pain and suffering came as a result of doman patriarchy. it matters that fordola grew up as a "priviledged" ala mhigan child within garlean camps! because neither group accepted her or her family in the end, because she was always going to be seen a traitor and a savage regardless of what she does and what she accomplishes!
again, the writing and the pacing and the way so many things are handled in stormblood is objectively baffling and shitty sometimes! but there is still the foundation of a story grounded in people of color! and pretending like stormblood doesn't exist or its the devil from the bible and it killed your dog because lyse is white skinned is just adding to the issue!

In A Realm Reborn we get the cocky, self-righteous Gaius and the mad scheming Lahabrea
In Heavensward, we have the ever raging and prideful Nidhogg, the power hungry and corrupt Thordan and the Heavens' Ward, we get the revenge driven Estinien possessed by the uncomprimising Nidhogg reborn, coupled with the stoic Igeyorhm and a different version of Lahabrea, one more calculating and yet severe.
In Stormblood we have the vengeful Yotsuyu, her bumbling brute, the complicated Fordola, and the disinterested but honed Zenos.
In Shadowbringers we have the driven Ran'jit, the self-absorbed Vauthry, the melancholic and cruel Emet-Selch, and the zealotry of Elidibus.
In Endwalker, we have Zenos returned but seemingly even more ennui than his Stormblood encounter, he seems more inwardly inspective yet seems to miss the point of us, we got the nihilistic Fandaniel, and the cruel to be kind Meteion.
In Dawntrail, we have the boastful Bakool Ja Ja, the self-assured yet waivering Zoraal Ja, the scheming Sareel Ja, the polite Sphene, the diabolical Sphene, and the cold Calyx.
Now with the upcoming patches they've pitched the cold calculating Calyx with the solemn yet accepting Halmarut.
No two villains are truly identical. They could of seen Elidibus and Emet-Selch's popularity and tried the past few expansions to recreate the lightning in a bottle. But they continued to add nuance or a greater element. Even with Zenos returning, he doesn't seem to be the same Zenos as the one in Stormblood. He feel uniquely grown and different from the past. Though he is trying to hit the same beats as he did before, the story is different so things are thus as well. Its a nice change of pace, that he is trying to recreate what he THINKS drew us to fight him in Stormblood and while being introspective and galling of Jullus but completely missing the entire fucking point of our past conflict.
That is to say nothing of how each Ilberd encounter feels different, the Warriors of Darkness, Ysayle, Asahi, Stormblood Era Elidibus, Golbez, all feel interestingly varied. In how they grow and how each of their appearances when set against us are different in their own way. Each no longer a single note but building into a symphony.
Eh, it is on the voting page of the contest, but may as well brag about my plushie here anyway (who knows if that voting page stays up after all).
Behold my newest addition to my carbuncle army: doll-sized Carbuncle (in contrast to Mini-Carbuncle from last time and medium Carbuncle from before that). Goal for my next plushie is: life sized.
Until then, these two cuties are gonna chill on my couch (Mini-Buncle is missing cause it was the gift for a friend, but he would reach up to the newest one's neck)
Gonna bring this new guy with me to Fanfest (yep, got tickets! ♥), I am thinking of putting him into one of those baby carrier thingies with which you strap a baby to your chest lmao
(in short: if you see a bald dude with a toddler buncle, be free to say "hi" cause that's gonna be me xDD)
The main fabric is Nicki (in english usually called minky, I think?), which is very cuddly and soft and has a nice shine to it. The red gem(?) and the eyes are felt. The eyes specifically are brown felt where I used a black marker to make the effect of depth. The ribbon is just your typical gift wrapping "fake satin" ribbon fabric.
The pattern is partially a modified version of Choly Knight's Eeeveelution Sitting Plush Pattern (I mostly used the tail and rough body shapes, but I changed the ears, face and enlarged most parts to get a more round shape over the elongated one that Choly had. STILL, credit where credit is due, theirs is a lovely pattern AND it is FREE!).
I next wanna have one the size of an actual medium dog. Gonna need to buy more fabric and REALLY think of the pattern (and maybe buy a sewing machine at that point, cause even this guy was a strain on my hands lol)

Whelp, my entry for "Illustration" for the Berlin FanFest Art Contest didn't make it to the voting period (I assume because it wasn't exactly a typical "painting", but it also wasn't really handcrafted?)
Anyway, since the "don't show it anywhere" period is over:

My beautiful Carbuncle Living Room Door!

Process below the line
Since ALL my entries were of Carbuncles (in case you wanna look for my other two entries, I made it into Handcrafted and Altered Screenshot, the name's "Moony"), since I adored it from the first moment I saw it in-game and always enjoy having it alongside me, I knew I gotta have a Carbuncle entry (which turned into four entries lmao)
I expected to need multiple sketches, but I made this and immediately went "yeap, I love this, I want this":
After doing some basic research on how stained glass doors are usually colored
I made a rough color template
And from there a more precise one
I drew the lineart in Clip Studio, then measured my door, used a tool called PosteRazor (which lets you make posters out of Din A4 pages) to cut the lineart into Din A4 sized pieces....and then printed 24 pages :'D
Put all of them into foil, then taped them into shape so I could be sure it would fit
And then all that was left was painting the thing with Window Color (and yes, the edges were a BITCH to unstick, and I would do some things differently now in hindsight)
I worked in segments, cause I live alone and that window is almost as tall as me so I would otherwise be guaranteed to end up with a mess that would stick to anything BUT the door
If you look reaaaaaally closely, then you can actually see where the edges of the foils/pages were, cause it's where the paint had stretched slightly, causing a slight light-dark effect, or sometimes a slight fold
Either way, those deciding which entries should get voted on either disagreed on the category (illustrated, but the definition on their website said "digital or traditional illustration", and it IS an illustration! It's not handcrafted in the "make a photo from three sides" way, like... should I have made a photo of the side where you see the lock of the door and nothing of the art? :'D
Whatever, I am complaining, but perhaps the other art was simply more what those who made the decision were looking for. I don't begrudge the other artists, and at the end of the day I now have this beautiful door regardless of the contest's results.
