I went through most of the pages of the SM-13's manual that are either visible on-screen or have been shown in BTS images and transcribed what I could into a more legible format.

Fan art for @bronzeplates's Say Grace bloodymary fic, featuring the ending scene of rearranging furniture Chapter 5. With both Grace's POV and Simon's POV. This ended up looking more Ava and Simon focused than bloodymary, haha.

I wanted to capture Simon's warped view of how he was fixated on Ava as if she was a piece of meat, and how he was seeing Grace not as another person but a second part of himself. Hence why Grace is colored red.

cus this thing needs basic electrical functions, that's fine, you'd expect a good hefty battery for that. but this thing is equip to shoot however many x-ray energy blasts and, how?

by the time SImon gets to the SM-8, he's taken 111 photos, and that about halfway into the movie. i've checked and regular stationary xray machines use about 5-20 kW. The camera takes about three seconds of output before giving a picture, times that to 111, that's uuuh about 6.7kJ.

as a note, a single Joule (J) is enough to raise the temperature of 0.239g of water from 0 °C to 1 °C. 6.7kJ is enough to heat 1.5 liters or water by one Celcius.

which yeah doesn't sound like all that much, but mind you this is for a NORMAL xray machine. the ones that don't give you immediate fuck-you-and-die-from-radiation sickness. a single chest xray equals 0.1mSrv, and we know from the SM-13 manuals that a single shot gives about 6000 mSrv. even a whole body procedure like a CT scan only go to 1 mSrv!

There's a person on tiktok named "Argon loves robots" who works in radiation safety and did a whole deep dive series on the camera too which inspired a lot of my research.

Sum up: in industrial radiography you can have x-rays produced with electricity like at the dentist's office etc. Or you can have live source cameras meaning basically there is a very small amount of a very radioactive material inside the camera. Hitting the shutter button exposes the radioactive material to the environment for a split second. Then the image is generated basically like echolocation but with particles released via radiation instead of sound waves. Pros of a live source camera is they are very cheap and don't require a lot of energy. Cons are they're dangerous as hell and involved in tons of accidental exposures to workers all the time irl. I think it's obvious which way the COI would lean here. Also fun fact, one of the most common materials used in these types of cameras (cobalt-60) is often created as a byproduct of nuclear reactors so they would have access to it as well!
