LUKEWARM TAKE:
If Galavant was on the air today it wouldn't have gotten cancelled so soon because when it actually aired it was too ahead of it's time and was lost on viewers but now we're living in a post-Tr*mp, post-Noonegetshappyendingsbecauseeveryonemustsufferanddieandnoonecares (THE MAGICIANS), post-Disneyisanevilgiantcorporation, post-wowtheworldisawfulmurderyandjustplainawful hellscape and I think we would all be able to appreciate Galavant, especially their freaking Democracy song and wartime aside, a whole lot more half a decade after it was cancelled.
John Stamos as John Hamm? And omg If I Was A Jolly Blacksmith would be such a relatable meme, like people already joke about how they're not equipped for traditional employment. Everything about Sid, Isabella, and Galavant is the One Braincell thing. The freaking Jester has the voice of an angel. GARETH'S CHARACTER ARC. MADALENA'S CHARACTER ARC. Xanax. Neo of Sporin.
God, this show was a gift and it came when no one was equipped to handle it. The music is SO GOOD, like, Alan freaking Menken, geez. I'm in love with Karen David. And Joshua Sasse still actively posts about how much he loved Galavant, like, why is is not a 10-season and multiple spinoff movies extravaganza? Why did it end so soon?
D'DEW. Remember when people were like, What if Neil Patrick Harris is The Dark King or smth teased at the end of season 2?? That would have been amazing.
Imagine Rachel Brosnahan guest starring as some pissed off Lady of The Lake who fights with Richard about The Hero Sword/Excalibur? How did he unite the kingdoms? We need to know! Does Tad Cooper hate Galavant or is Galavant a reluctantly fluffy uncle? SID AND GARETH'S FRIENDSHIP ARC.
We've seen The Enchanted Forest, now show us The Isle of Lesbos. Show us an army from Spinster Isle who don't agree Richard is the One True King and they break away as an independent territory. What about the New Democracy??? Is One True King in name only and no real rulership except in times of conflict??? The Pirates???
Bobby opens a rival knight school and she and Galavant's dad need to figure shit out. Galavant is a stay at home dad bc let's face it hes more bumbling than swash buckling at this point, hes DIED and rallying troops has always seemed to go better for Isabella anyway. Bobby and Isabella adventuring while Gal and Richard stay at home and watch the wee ones, which is to say, they babysit a dragon and howevermanykidsisabellawantedbcshesincharge and Tad Cooper is so soft with the kids like wtf he breathes fire does he think he is their cousin or smthn bc he loves them.
And, like, ofc the show wasn't perfect bc no show is except maybe ODAAT and B99 and TGP and stuff, but it was pretty damn close??? They spoiled the entire season 2 in the opening number and I was still surprised?? And it takes place in a Medieval setting but it's not that crass? Other than tongue-in-cheek references to 21st c shortcomings or social standards which is actually pretty clever bc they're not making fun or something they're criticizing a modern system than continually allows hurtful or incorrect things to passively and actively occur, like they were calling us regressive from the DARK FREAKING AGES, that's such a burn. But sometimes it's so subtle u have to be like, holy shit they're making fun of the government geez or they're making fun of how much we revere the fashion and modeling industries. And they make fun of themselves a lot???
Galavant eludes explanation and I'm just really sad it was cancelled bc it was a masterpiece and I'm on mobile rn so idk how to put it under a cut so oopsies. I just have a lot of feelings okeh?
