Virmire’s End
Virmire, a heavenly planet that would claim his life. Here he sat, drenched in oncoming waters that soiled his armour with mud. What a thing to care about when he was possibly going to die. Shepard hadn’t come for him or reached over the com in confirmation of his death.
He signed up for this, he trained and tortured himself through his younger years just to end up here-drenched in dirty water. Fallen upon the bomb itself, the LT panted into his damaged helmet with visor to clog with mist of his scared breath. He didn’t want to go this way, not yet.
“Kaidan, pull yourself together!” He begged his internal conscious, squinting shut the tired eyes to shield himself from the self doubt. Liquid splashed against the broken visor, wetting his face. Hands quickly swiped away excess water and watched the Normandy begin it’s ascent into the atmosphere.
A voice crackled over the com within his helmet, clear enough to hear though he had to strain the aching ears. “Kaidan, I’m sorry.” She confessed with a hitch in her voice, a guilt present. He knew this is how it would end, it couldn’t go any other way. Shepard wouldn’t let romantic feelings get into her influence. He had to die here; not Ashley.
The LT sucked in, pressing a hand to his helmet to induce the reply. “I understand. Be safe.” Kaidan whispered, watching his team escape. A smile lifted along his lips, happy to see them rescued and he would die with a heroic sacrifice.
He felt the bomb begin to expand as it flew apart with fire to burn his armour and send him into the air. He wasn’t dead, his armour had enough to withstand the bomb enough to destroy the material and leave him burned.
Everything was in slow motion, his body scorching with flames and missing his armour. Skin black like charcoal, with blood breaking the skin. Kaidan watched as his body fell into the waters, sinking slowly. Hands couldn’t fight the current that pulled him and the rubble of Virmire down with. He gasped as air fled and replaced with water submerging into the depths of his lungs.
Hands clutched to the burning throat, a stream of blood swaying in the shaky waters from his mouth and wounds. Colouring ocean with his body paint. He mouthed an apology to his parents and Shepard, to have not give them a better chance or fought harder. Instead, he was sinking to the bottom of the planets core and would simply whisk away into nothing.
Eventually the choking gurgling sounds stopped and eyes hooded. His body floated along down, slowly making it’s way through rubble until it faded into darkness.
