Yeah, it's changed a lot. The unfortunate fact is the bigger you get, the fewer clothing options there are out there.

My experience has been that there are a number of big dropoffs along the way:

Passing XL: you start finding yourself more limited in standard stores; a lot of labels top out at XL.

Passing 3X: you'll find some labels in traditional stores that accommodate up to XXL or XXXL, but that's the exception to the rule. You'll have to start looking at things online more often unless you're going to a retailer that specifically caters to "big & tall" people, like a DXL.

Passing 4X: the very very top end for most "traditional" labels & things like branded sports merchandise. 5X & above, you pretty much don't have any options from these companies, with only the rarest exception. All of the fun print-to-ship t-shirt websites that didn't phase out after 3X phase out after 5X.

Passing 6X: your "lifesaver" brands that magically still cater to big guys phase out at 6X- sportswear brands like Columbia that have given you that fleece vest to cover your shirt button gaps at work or a puffer coat for wintertime. Even DXL is unlikely to have bigger than 6X in store, and what they do have will be limited options of their house brand shirts. 6X seems to be the uppermost limit at Amazon, as well.

At 7X & above, you're looking at online retailers that cater to extra-big folks- KingSize, BigDudeClothing, and so-forth. And some of their stuff is fine, but it's going to be more conservative in terms of cut and color options (which is a real bummer if you like wearing colors). I spend more time in t-shirts now than at any time since I've been a little kid, simply because it can be hard to find other things I like that fit correctly. Jeans/trousers/pants are even harder to deal with; most companies assume the bigger the waistline, the taller the inseam you need, which isn't the case for me. And a lot of the cuts are just awful.

I wonder what all your old classmates would think. What careers and lives have they built while you doubled, tripled, or even quadrupled in size? What about your teachers/professors? All that instruction wasted on someone destined to have an empty head and a full belly. Destined to completely let go of mind and body.
