i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors

Cohesion within compositions/lighting

"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!

This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!

Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process

With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)

#not my art #ohohohohohoho #you have activated my trap card #tho links were already provided and i have yet to see them #and if they tell me something i dont know i will be very excited #but i will pointlessly info dump in the tags regardless #the biggest thing about colors is understanding the different scales of color (so to speak)#First (most important) is value—how light or dark something is #Second is Hue: what color on the visible spectrum (ROYGBIV)#Third is Saturation: How vivid is the color?#Understanding these three scales is CRUCIAL to understanding how to create/balance contrast in your work #The other factor of color theory OP brought up was color relationships—such as complimentary (R/G)(B/O)(Y/P)#but taking the R/G example and using the scales to help understand their relationship better #Red and Green are complementary #(thats the correct spelling)#but they also scream XMAS in their most audacious form #So lets adjust the values until we get a dark green and a light red for contrast #we can also tint that R hue into pink (tinting is desaturating a color with white)#(in traditional painting adjusting the value is often intrinsically linked with adjusting saturation because adding white or black—#—to a color will automatically desaturate it but I DIGRESS)#and lets also adjust the hue of that green to its analogous relative: Blue #creating a nice deep teal #and bam our final product is a deep teal with light pink accents #providing contrast across all scales while not provoking any jingling of bells #there are also the different types of color media such as subtractive/additive and their applications but #lets stick with the basics and not go into optics #unless requested :)#in the mean time i have some projects to catch up on

For me, I can recognize your art by Danny's hair (the unique flowiness in ghost mode, but also the well drawn bangs in human mode which most people give up on), combined with an overall slightly realistic feel to a picture. (...But that kind of only works for pictures of Danny. ^_^" I'm not familiar enough with your art yet to pick up on more.)

yo thanks so much for the feedback :D And yah, I can often recognize an artist by their take on Danny's hair too; it's pretty varied. I leaned into the anti-gravity and dry ice theme for his ghost mode myself. And I don't blame anyone giving up on those mickey mouse logic bangs lmao

#dp #animation #gif #ghost aura #cryxdraws #i am working on a meta post to explain my thoughts on ghostly auras #but basically #ghosts are aliens and have an absolutely fascinating form of communication #that is created via the core pulsating energy #what kind? all the kinds #the basics tho are #light thermic and psychic (ecto-radiation)#regardless of core type #but the applications are practically infinate #ghosts that can change the hue of their auras based off the frequency/level of excitement #ghosts with such massive auras they can effect the actual weather #with thermic shifts #ghosts that can project their emotions/desires onto others so intensily it’s basically mass hypnosis #so yah basically a way to explain the magic #and more supernatural aspects #but also I just really like the idea of Danny being accidentally LOUD as Phantom without even realizing it #he’s got a massive aura and doesn’t even know how many signals he’s putting out all the time lmao #gets excited about a good grade and every ghost w/in 10 miles knows about it #or at least they get the vibes #humans can sorta sense it too?#but lacking cores themselves they can’t ‘’translate’’#they just percieve the effects #like bright cold and an odd sense of joy—in the case of happy Danny #but those signals only emit while the core is active so he very rarely has to worry about it in human form
