When Osteon is repeating his criticisms to Legs and he brings up the boat thing saying he's disappointed that no one was at the top of the boat making sure more bandits didn't board but then explains that he understands that that would have difficult given that they only have three people and that bandits were trying to break in from under the boat. I'm sitting there like, what is the point of this??? Why are you criticizing them for not acting ideally when you understand that circumstances weren't ideal??? What is the point???? This isn't teaching. It's just grading. And fundamentally unfair grading at that. There's nothing to learn from this when the amount of people they had was outside of their control (and inside Osteon's control which makes the whole thing more infuriating). The reason why circumstances weren't ideal is because of Osteon. They could've had at least one more person in this scenario to cover more of the boat if Osteon decided to help them.
okay, I've gotten to the "Osteon criticizes the rescue mission" part of the VOD. I saw spoilers for this stream so I was not as struck by the reveal that Osteon was watching the whole time. Instead, I was more focused on how bad this academy is at teaching anything.
First of all, Osteon is grading the students on their ability to strategize, which is probably pretty frustrating for the students on its own given that this academy doesn't teach strategy (or much of anything really). The students are getting a pop quiz on a subject they've never been taught and being called stupid for not getting full marks. (which is not a great way to teach anything tbh)
Secondly, I don't think Osteon's critiques really taught the students much, because it seemed to me that Osteon simply didn't understand the students' perspective. Osteon was basically just grading them like this was a test with an answer key. For Osteon, all of their actions have already been sorted into either good or bad. And when explaining why they consider an action bad, Osteon incorrectly assumes a lack of understanding about the danger they were in on the students' part (ex. assuming that the students stopped on the bridge because they thought they were out of danger), which prevents Osteon from teaching anything in this moment. Every time Osteon criticizes their actions, the students have an explanation for why they made the decision they did, which can and should have been an opportunity for discussion and actual learning. Instead the students' actions just get graded as "good", "bad", or "bad but understandable" and they move on.
For example, in the case where Osteon criticizes them for letting Legundo run ahead and Scott explains that he felt that, since Legundo is the slowest, the group could get to the dock faster if Legs ran ahead, Osteon just responds that splitting up was still foolish (bc legs could be attacked while on his own I assume). The problem is not that this is an unreasonable criticism. The problem is that this doesn't teach the students anything bc they're not stupid, they knew that was a risk and chose to do it anyway. The way for the students' to learn something from this was to engage with the motivations behind their actions. Osteon could have been explaining the best way to prioritize speed versus caution, and how to evaluate which one a situation calls for, rather than treating the students like they don't understand that they could be attacked on the road (something they understand VERY well).
TLDR; Legs, Scott, and Graecie are smarter than Osteon gave them credit for and that is in spite of this academy, not because of it. And because Osteon didn't realize that, she was trying to teach them stuff the three of them already knew.
Scott and legs can and should be able to talk at eachother about their issues. Scott gets to voice his anger and legs gets to talk about the song and his situation without worrying about the other getting hurt
god they really should
both are people who clearly dont want their emotions to burden or hurt those around them, especially when both have had instances of letting go of said emotions and accidentally hurting someone (physically or not)
scott even said on today's stream that legs reminded him of himself before everything (aka before starting repressing his emotions I GUESS) and how he apparently used to go off to PUNCH TREES AND ROCKS WHEN HE WAS ANGRY? BARE FISTED?? (why is he so hot why is he so hot why is he so hot why is he so hot why is he so hot why is he so hot )
anyway i can surely see a good dynamic forming here, and i hope they start working together and interacting more, because i feel like it could help both
After their talk, TF!Scott commented about how TF!Legs reminds him of himself when would have to go off into a forest and cave and punch trees and rocks with his bare fists in order to vent out his anger when he was younger. I bet Legs talking about how he was gonna go back to breaking stuff really made him have some flashbacks.
How much of his own bones did he break and his own blood did he spill against stone and wood after the incident with the bandits I wonder? Angry at just how unfair life was and how cruel other people could be. Angry that he survived when the others did not. Angry at himself for hesitating and having to come home to the screams and wails of mourning families because he couldn’t move when he needed to. Just so, incredibly angry and the only thing he could think to do to deal with it was to put himself in pain until the day he could strangle his own negative emotions down deep into his soul and hold them there.
It’s no wonder he’s a force of nature in a fight, since that’s the only time he feels it’s appropriate to actually let himself feel negative emotions. Other than that he tries to maintain control of his emotions as best as he can, to not perfect results. He mentioned that when he did let go he had accidentally killed AJ, feeling guilty over letting his emotions go the way they did. This instance probably reaffirming his not so healthy “stuff everything down into my soul” mentality.
I think he feels that he physically cannot allow himself to feel strong emotions anymore freely. His magic started to encroach into his being and room whenever he was in distress about Pyro, he accidentally killed AJ when she lit just the right match to ignite the fuse, overwhelming fear caused him to freeze up in the most perilous situation in his life up to that point with the bandits during the supply trip. Every incident continues to reaffirm this severe repression of his emotions because every time he’s felt something that strongly something bad happened/was happening. It’s an incredibly unhealthy and cruel thing to do to yourself, and I feel sad that he probably feels like it’s his only option.
He has to be calm, collected, and helpful. The pressure he puts on himself to maintain those aspects of himself even under extreme circumstances is way too much for any one person to have to deal with. This is not me saying that Scott is a ticking time bomb that everyone should avoid with a 10 foot pole. Quite the opposite actually. He’s a guy that will need help when the time comes if things go even more south than they already are. Because I have a feeling the more of his distress that he tries to bottle up, the bigger the possibility of his magic overtaking him in the future to inevitably disastrous results.

ok genuine question: people keep saying there's a war going on. so... where is it?
like is there fighting going on somewhere? legs' hometown is at the border right? is that where the fighting is?
I understand that the corruption may have come from the realm of storms, and I suppose that counts as biological warfare. But it's not armed conflict or anything. You don't need soldiers to cure a plague.
or is it more like the realm of summer is anticipating fighting? like they expect the realm of storms to attack later (maybe if the corruption doesn't wipe out the realm of summer on its own)? or maybe the realm of summer is planning on invading the realm of storms (in retaliation?) and that's why they need soldiers? for their own attack?
I suppose the third option is that they're meant to be fighting monsters, like goblins and storm ravens. But that's even more confusing, because students have already been doing that but in distinctly un-soldier-like way. They're just kinda going out with no organization and no plan, and slaughtering their way through hordes of monsters. So like if that is what they are meant to be "soldiers" for, the academy is going about this very strangely, letting them sorta do their own thing.
Long winded explanation but the main thing is that Professor Penrose confirmed in her lecture that the Kingdom of Eternal Summer is part of, and likely the dominant government of, the “Sun Empire,” which notably also included the Realm of Eternal Storm before they “betrayed the Empire,” implyin they’d won their political independence and were now in hostility with Summer/the Empire
Since then the Summer government has dedicated a lot of effort into villainizin the Storm Realm through propaganda, orchestratin literal book burnins for texts like “Symbiosis” that depict the storm ravens as natural allies of dragons and unrelated to the corruption, and then later defamin them as “carriers” of the corruption and all Storm Realm civilians as “mad cultists that worship the corruption” despite Juniper’s first-hand testimony against that
The “War” that Summer keeps insistin about is really just an attempt at recolonizin the Storm Realm, but they know that won’t sell to prospective soldiers, so they instead sell recruits on “fightin the corruption” and then synonomize in their minds the corruption with the Storm Realm, which is why they’re so insistent on callin the corruption issue a “war” and not the “disaster” it is, they’re tryna normalize militaristic beliefs and decision-makin among new recruits
The plan is to appeal to people that have been orphaned or displaced by the Corruption and weaponize their grief and anger into politically useful violence, which is why tf!Ros and tf!Pyro, the most vehemently anti-corruption students by far, have bought into the “war” talkin point hard and started perpetuatin that same rhetoric against the Storm Realm. The academy only gives a shit about the corruption insofar as a scapegoat they can use to radicalize young adults into martyrdom and genocide
