Yet again, cops wonder why they're not welcome at pride.
Sorry op for taking over your post i just get so passionate about history and especially erasure.
The existence of the lgbtqia+ community IS history. We are so heavily a part of history that erasing our existence is erasing part of history. Oh but wait that's what the authorities have been doing for decades :/
Just a warning there are a couple arguably shitty people in this list ive made, but we need to recognize that our community isn't immune from horrible people. Even if we don't agree with them, they are still a part of history. We can't erase them from our history, that would make us no better than that cop wanting to remove our existence from the history classroom.
I looked at important figures that we know were a part of the community. And boy there's some really damn important people here.
John Maynard Keynes (1883-1946) - He fundamentally changed economic policies for parts of the western world. Openly gay in his younger years, also began dating and married a woman so likely bisexual.
Alan Turing (1912-1954) - Creator of the Turing Test, helped defeat the nazis, and designed the Automatic Computer Engine. We wouldnt have computers if it wasnt for him. He was prosecuted and chemically castrated for being gay.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973) - The true inventor of rock n' roll, she was openly in a relationship with another woman.
Allan Cox (1926-1987) - He made huge contributions to the theory of plate tectonics. He was in a relationship with his colleague Clyde Wahrhaftig.
Lynn Conway (1938-2024) - She invented generalized dynamic instruction handling which is part of a process used in most computers to improve performance. Openly trans and was fired from IBM in 1968 because of it.
Jon 'maddog' Hall (born 1950) - Advocate for open-source hardware and software. President of Project Cauã. He announced that hes gay in Linux Magazine.
Jennifer Pritzker (born 1950) - Founder of the TAWANI Foundation, openly trans.
Sally Ride (1951-2012) - First American woman to go to space and still the youngest. She was in a relationship with Tam O'Shaughnessy for 27 years and kept it hidden until it came out in her obituaries.
Sophie Wilson (born 1957) - She created the base for processors im smartphones. She transitioned in 1994
Alan Emtage (born 1964) - He created the first ever search engine, Archie, and hes gay.
Lana and Lilly Wachowski (Lana born 1965, Lilly born 1967) - The directors of The Matrix, arguably a very important movie in history. Both sisters are trans.
Peter Thiel (born 1967) - Hes done a lot in tech, co-founder of paypal, first investor of facebook, etc. Openly gay and married.
Chris Hughes (born 1983) - co-founder of facebook and the Economic Security Project. He married his husband in 2012.
Now this is a very small amount of people, I didn't even look at people further back that are speculated to be queer, since we don't know for sure. We can't exactly go back and ask them if they are. But either way these people that we know for sure have made HUGE changes to our world. So many of the things they influenced wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for them. Erasing these people from history, or even just erasing their identity, is destroying a part of history.
Also if I happened to get any of these wrong please let me know. I tried to look at multiple sources but i can still make mistakes.
