I am no expert on the battle of Blair mountain but it is one of the instances in history where the term red neck was used to describe coal miners who went on strike. It took place in West Virginia (I believe). Both black and white miners went on strike. The term red neck was used to describe the fact that the coal miners on strike wore red scarfs. By no means did racism not exist in this rebellion. Sadly the union workers lost the battle of Blair mountain, many were killed. Charlie Gordon and “Red” Thompson (unfortunately I could not find a first name) were two black men that led squads into the battle of Blair mountain and we don’t know what happened to them.

There is most definitely someone on this site that could tell you much more in depth information about the battle of Blair mountain, but this is just what I was able to gather.
