I love facing the Xenomorph, she’s one of my favorite killers. What I don’t love about facing her are the teammates I’m paired up with, especially when I play as Ripley and Xenos use it as an excuse to focus solely on me. It seems nobody knows how to counter her which is strange considering how easy you as a survivor can make it. Unfortunately this is the case with various killers as survivors don’t know every single mechanic that comes with the gameplay(but we can’t really be blamed when the game doesn’t bother to explain secret mechanics). So I’m gonna make a list of tips and tricks to better face the Xenomorph.Â
To put it simple: be as unpredictable as possible! Well, that applies to any killer really but Xenomorph is the killer you really need to know how to trick.
Facing the Xenomorph you are met with the survivor interactive item: turrets! Xenomorphs are scared of turrets because it has some detrimental effects on the killer:
Staggering (makes it a little harder to maneuver Xeno)
Removal of crawler mode (this as we know is when the Xenomorph is on all fours and can attack you with her tail)
Crawler mode takes longer to come back(there’s a meter running any time Xeno is in the standing mode, so crawler mode is inevitable. But turrets make that meter go down)
It seems rather simple, but there’s so much more to turrets that people realize.
Turrets and tunnels give you plenty of information.Â
When you place down a turret there’s a blue radius surrounding it, and this is only visible to survivors. So long as the Xenomorph enters the blue circle, flames will begin to fire at it. However, the turret WILL start to beep and alert you that the Xenomorph is coming even before it hits the circle! It of course beeps faster the closer she is to the turret. And amazingly enough, the turrets counter the undetectable status! A Xenomorph with no terror radius will still be pointed out by turrets.
Speaking of undetectable, you can technically apply that to yourself while facing this killer. When the Xenomorph is inside a tunnel she’s able to see your footsteps from a 16m radius(though with a certain add-on that distance can be increased). Some people will say that it’s not worth it doing this (as holding turrets hinders and prevents you from doing anything until you drop it/set it up), but walking around with a turret prevents your footsteps from appearing. Heck, your turret will STILL beep in your hand if the Xenomorph is anywhere near you.Â
Another piece of information that the turrets will give you is tunnel traveling and exiting. They can of course still sense when the Xenomorph is near when she goes through tunnels(which is why so many will place turrets near tunnels). But the other fun part if disabled turrets.Â
Huh??
Let's say you’re working on a generator and your nearby turret doesn’t alert you to anything, but it suddenly turns off for 3 seconds. Ever thought of what that means? It means the Xenomorph just exited one of her seven tunnels and is potentially going to start a chase or is checking on a generator.
Now let’s talk about setting up turrets. You WANT to set up as many turrets as you can: what frustrates me about teammates is that (enough) turrets are NEVER set up, thus making it hard to loop and even detect the Xenomorph. If your teammate is getting chased, tunneled even, and you’re only focused on generators, you’re bound to lose that teammate and potentially the entire match.
Xenomorphs can easily destroy turrets if they get to them fast enough or if they use their tail attack from a distance, so they also serve as a bit of a distraction. However, to better place turrets down here are some ideas:
You can use a turret as a distraction by setting it to the side in sections where wall-hugging is necessary. An example is when you play killer shack, the killer is going to also hug the walls in an attempt to catch up to you. But by setting up a turret a few feet away from the walls will force the Xeno to step away from the wall to break it, or they’ll be forced to take the burn and go out of crawler mode. Also helps if you do it near corners. Even placing them in front of vault locations helps, as the Xenomorph will be stuck in animation while getting burned.
Do not place turrets directly in front of tunnels, as this makes it easier for a good Xenomorph to get rid of it. Or if you do, just don’t do it too often and add in the following step:
Place 2 turrets close to each other. This way, the Xenomorph is forced to deal with one while the other breaks her out of her power.
When placing turrets alone, place them in areas that can be considered dead zones. If you have nothing to hide behind, neither does the Xenomorph.
Place turrets in patches of high grass to hide them, making it harder for the Xenomorph to figure out where she’s being hit from.
Some random little tips that don’t need much explanation:
Xeno’s terror radius is smaller when she’s in crawler mode.
When Xeno is in crawler mode, use rocks/boxes/short structures that you would use against somebody like the Blight or Huntress. As long as you’re able to go around the structure quickly, they’ll have a harder time lining up the tail attack.
Maintain distance and be unpredictable. If possible, always listen out for the sound cue of Xenomorph readying her tail to strike. Just know Xeno CAN control the tail while it’s striking, and a good Xenomorph may predict your fakeout which is why you need to be unpredictable.
Xenomorphs tend to respect pallets as this will guarantee a free tail attack while you’re dropping the pallet. So fake pallet drops/greed as much as you can.
Similar to Dredge and Singularity, Xenomorph’s power is slowed down near hooks. By this I specifically mean tunnel exiting. So you have a bit extra time to escape if a Xenomorph is camping/constantly returning to hooks.
Turrets can overheat and will be disabled. You’re able to repair them without needing to go get a new one.
Dropped/unset turrets will explode after a few seconds.
You can always see the auras of turrets, making it easier to locate them when in chase. If you see a turret’s aura disappear as you get close it just means that, well you’re close. If you see the aura disappear from afar, it most likely means the Xenomorph broke it.
Picking up a survivor removes crawler mode, and the meter will begin filling up once hooked (look at the little meter on the bottom left corner)
A Xenomorph going into a tunnel makes crawler mode come back faster.
Add-ons you want to keep in mind:
Cat Carrier: a Xenomorph using this will go undetectable if a turret takes them out of their power
Acidic Blood: a Xenomorph who is pallet stunned a few seconds after exiting a tunnel will injure/apply the deep wound on you. Some like to run this with a Spirit Fury-Enduring build to double tap.
Semiotic Keyboard: a generator’s progression can be highlighted to the Xenomorph if it’s in a turret’s radius
