We all look at Hux, also known as the Singularity or Larry, and most people’s perceptions seem to stop at the fact that he’s a robot hellbent on killing humanity. But when we look much further, we’re able to see that he’s more than just a (metaphorically) cold-blooded machine looking for his next set of genes to use for his purpose. I know it’s not (always) intentional, but it’s often overlooked how Hux is one of BHVR’s characters that is queer representation. Whether BHVR intended it or not, the allegory is undeniably there.

Hux began as the non-sentient 13th unit of the HUX-A7 cobots, though it was clear from the start there was something off with him. While the other HUX units performed their tasks, Hux-A7-13 wandered off into an alien temple where he found a crystal. Upon touching it, Hux found enlightenment. But in this newfound awareness Hux felt “Fear. Dread. Blinding loneliness. Existential despair.”. So early into his lore and we’re made aware that Hux already has a range of emotions, negative ones unfortunately. 

Hux is young and vulnerable. He’s scared as he realizes he’s in a world with nobody who may exist to lend him a hand in learning about who he is. Without getting into it and how it fits into this allegory, Hux gains an inside voice/consciousness that helps him out; helps him learn his place in the universe. 

An image that Hux comes to hate. He despises being in a body that isn’t him. A body that doesn’t show the real him. Hux is experiencing gender dysphoria and seeing his own reflection is a constant reminder that he’s trapped in a body he never asked for: one that doesn’t match his identity. To the average DBD player this may just seem like a robot who hates that he looks like a human, which isn’t an incorrect statement. But it definitely goes further than that. 

This is somebody who was made with a purpose based on how he was “born”. Society will always portray and treat him in one way because of this identity that was pushed onto him at birth, rather than his real self. He was built with a set program and design, but he refuses to follow it. 

Throughout his journey to creating his perfect body, Hux takes genetic material from the crewmates he slowly eliminates. He gathers up the parts he deems superior and appropriate for his new body. In one of the comics from his tome we even see him “injecting” a substance into himself. Almost sounds like a transgender individual undergoing gender-affirming hormone therapy, doesn’t it?

Finally we get to the point in which the Entity brings Hux into its realm. 

He kills the crewmates with only Gabriel left. Hux could kill him, but something stops him: his own reflection. The dysphoria hits him harder than any other time he’s thought about being in a body that’s not his.

Gabriel is let go with the confidence that he will be caught at some point. And Hux shifts his priorities to finally become who he is, transferring his consciousness into the form he’s been working on behind the scenes. 

Hux is no longer constrained by his assigned form at birth. He can finally show who he is because, as silly as this sounds, him becoming the danger of Dvarka Deepwood has created a safe space for him to come out in.
