natasha’s well aware of her pessimistic outlook on life. it’s safe, keeps her in a rut that she can only look up out of. and being kind to people she doesn’t know ( barely knows, whatever, the difference is nothing these days ) doesn’t make her life any easier. but then poe’s like a bright ray of sunshine that blinds even her cruelest ambitions. he’s kind in the face of a life that would break a lesser person. and it confuses her. “ talking to you is like talking to a brick wall, ” she grumbles, mirroring poe’s body language by leaning against the opposite wall. 

“ so then where does that leave you? ” she asks, turning to look away to avoid his gaze. “ you’re kind. in the face of things that could steal everything from you. you’re good, and don’t bother arguing with me about that. does that mean you make life more difficult for yourself for no reason than other people’s lives? ”

it’s not that he doesn’t understand where she’s coming from. he very much does, actually, he’s just chosen not to fall into it. and it was an active choice on his part. to see the worst of the galaxy and refuse to give in, be the man that he could be if he decided to stop fighting for the light. “i’ve been told that before. my papa used to say that fighting me was almost never worth the trouble cause i was so stubborn.” it was that same stubbornness that allowed him to remain hopeful, kind, in the face of this. 

“ it’s cute that you’re trying to pick out girls for me, ” sara leans over and drops her hand on poe’s shoulder in a more buddy-buddy show of appreciation. while taking someone home for the night would be nice, she’s really just enjoying spending time with something who isn’t trying to ruin her dating life. namely her entire merry band of misfits. “ she’s both hot and looks like me, though. so you’re getting warmer. ” sara spins on her bar stool and waves at the bartender, nudging poe with her shoulder. “ wanna get wasted and dance with people whose names we don’t know? ”

he wishes, desperately, that he could take that thought from his mind but he knows he can’t, everyone has their burdens and as much as poe might want to sometimes he cannot take everyone’s on his own shoulders. so he presses his lips to grog’s shoulder and wraps his arms around the man’s waist, pulling him into a hug. “i like who you are.” it’s the truth but he knows that sometimes grog doesn’t, so he doesn’t fault him for wanting to grow and change. “i just want you to be happy, so i’ll do whatever you need to help.”

          returning to the force had been like stepping into the warm embrace of an old friend, familiar and consuming and welcoming. once again, his light flared and burned within him, wrapping around him and providing a degree of  peace  he’s not felt for years. and yet … he could not still his unease about the days to come, nor the restless visions that plague his nights. touching the force in rest aids his initial drift into slumber, but the force is not quiet, and he’s fallen out of practice in suppressing its voice.           raising a brow, luke meets the gaze of the pilot, fixing him with  a look.   ❝ young man. ❞   his tone is serious, instilled with the practiced authority of both a jedi master and former general, but the glitter in his eyes is meant to soften it somewhat.   ❝ you’re an exceptional commander and an even better pilot, but don’t  think for a moment that you’re capable of getting  ME  to do something I don’t  want  to do. ❞   the corners of his lips twitch upwards and he gives his head a light shake. exhaling, he allows the last traces of authority to seep out of his tone, and his voice is  softer  when he speaks next.   ❝ I may not have to stay up with you, but I’m not likely to sleep anytime soon. so since we’re both going to be up anyways, would you like something to drink ?? I could use a mug of hot chocolate, myself. ❞

there have been times where poe thinks of asking his father questions about what war does to you, about the ways it takes you and chews you up and spits you out because he knows that kes has seen enough of it to have answers. but he doesn’t, won’t put him in the position of reliving those parts of his life unless he has no choice. so he finds his own ways to deal. mostly that comes in the form of working. not the worst coping mechanism around.

he tries, fails mostly he’s almost certain, to suppress a grin at the older man’s tone. “yes, sir, of course, sir.” his tone is a mockery of what he would use with someone actually reprimanding him but he hopes that luke won’t mind. poe has a lot of respect for people that have earned it, and this man certainly has, but that doesn’t mean he’s got any plans to bend over backwards for him. “i could use some caf, if you’re offering.” and some food, probably/ so he forces himself away from the desk he’d been working over. “lead the way.”
