Fanfictions and fan theories for the books, manga, and anime this 21+-year-old inhales on a regular basis. Plus occasional posts about my own works, although I keep it vague on the original stuff. (main blog for sixfingersixtails and portalwalker)
...I should probably make a permanent pin so that I feel less guilty about reblogging my own fic chapters. So, here we go!
Hiya! Call me Cross -- like the fork in the road. Iâm a fanfic writer for a lot of different fandoms. I donât have one specific one I lean on the most; I tend to cycle through depending on what Iâm in the mood for at the moment.
My AO3 profile is here, under CrossingTheFourthWall. The only reason the name is different is because itâs a combination of my Tumblr name and my old Fanfiction.net name, FourthWallBreaker (I donât post there anymore, but Iâm leaving it up). I write for a wide variety of fandoms in accordance with whatever has my focus at the time.
60 fics and counting!
IT SHOULD BE NOTED THERE IS ALWAYS A CHANCE MY FICS COULD BE LOCKED FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. Between AI scraping and people potentially using AI to read fics aloud without consent, my hand has been forced to lock things down a couple times, but Iâve undone that move afterwards. I want to leave things open for my readers, but thereâs no telling how things will go in the future.
I have a Discord server!  Mostly itâs become a Tales of Arise fanfic writers hangout, but weâve got interests beyond the Tales series. I post sneak peeks at my writing here, as well as talk about whatever interests have got my attention.
I do run a couple RP-centric blogs as well -- one for the aforementioned self-insert-ish OCs, Maria Carlsdale, and another for a kitsune-themed Ford Pines. Both havenât seen a lot of attention (mostly because I donât have a ton of experience in the RP community....), but if folks want to give them a poke, youâre more than welcome to! Just, ah, go easy on the blog designs for them? I donât have the skills to go poking around at making them look super fancy like some people do.
CURRENT WIP/FICS-TO-POST LIST:
A Realm Remembered (MobiusFF/FFXIV)
A Life Debt (Pokemon X&Y/Legends ZA)
Man-Made Harmony (Pokemon Legends ZA/Scarlet&Violet)
Mobius Bound (MobiusFF)
Captured Moments (FFXIVWrite 2025) (FFXIV/MobiusFF)
Distant Cousins (FFVII/Trigun(Maximum))
Chronicles of an Exiled Adventurer (FFXIV(HW))

One of the best things about being a writer is thinking of something small you can add to your work thatâs just. Devastating. Like youâre sitting there going. Oh. That would be diabolical. People would get really riled up about that. Exquisite. Letâs do it.
text: [ âSome of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we canât do things weâve been doing for 5000 years.â ]
And they're absolutely specifically pushing it, make no mistake. It's not just a matter of "it's there, it's convenient, so people are going to take the path of the least resistance", it is a legitimate and concerted effort on the part of these companies to get people to outsource all these things to their models.
They're preying on insecurities to do it. Yes, you can write an essay - but can you write a good essay, they ask you. Do you not want to improve your output? Do you not want people to think of you as competent and very clever? Why go through the mortifying process of failing and failing and failing until you succeed if you can just skip the "learning" part of doing, and simply generate a ready-made product?
I'm preaching to the choir here obviously but it's a concerning thing to witness nonetheless. My kid is 6 next week and I've been teaching her that failing at things is morally neutral and in fact necessary even before the advent of AI, but it's becoming ever more important that we teach the kids that criticism and failure and discomfort aren't necessarily bad things, but just a part of the growth process.
AI companies are heavily invested in making themselves relevant. They want people to believe they can't do the things they have done unaided before and to make them become reliant on the AI models, so the AI models' existence is artificially justified.
The prompt I rolled this time was "Snuff." I...went in an interesting direction with this one.
Spoilers for Shadowbringers 5.0, with some information pulled from an optional Lv 80 dungeon in regards to a character in this story!
This is another Wol-focused scene, and as such, I am also pulling from Mobius Final Fantasy. "Spoilers" for the second-to-last boss fight in the "Warrior of Despair" story arc of this now-inaccessible mobile game.

Red, cat-like ears twitched as they picked up the sound of clanking metal and heavy, snarling breathing.
Gâraha Tia turned his head, tracking the sound. It echoed amongst the quiet, near-dead trees of what used to be the Twelveswood, bouncing off rotted wooden buildings that marked the ruins of abandoned Gridania. Or, near enough â what few surviving poachers there were had moved into the buildings the Seedseer and her people had vacated, and with the elementals long silent, no one could argue or complain about the new situation.
The tension of the silent city only seemed to increase with each clanking step Gâraha heard.
âBiggs, whatââ
The Ironworks engineer with him grabbed Gâraha by the back of his shirt and pulled him back into a nearby alley. Before Gârahaâs yelp could fully form, a large hand clapped over the miqoâteâs mouth.
âShhh,â the roegadyn hissed into his ear. âThat monsterâs cominâ down the street. Just stay still, stay quiet, and whatever you do, donât run.â
An alarming warning, considering theyâd managed to parley with the poachers not but five minutes ago for access to what few records remained after Black Rose had killed all in range.
And also considering what Biggs III had warned him of before theyâd set foot in the remains of the Twelveswood.
âThereâs a monster shaped like a man that prowls the Ghimlyt Dark. Makes it hell for anyone tryinâ to scavenge for parts from Garlean magitek. Rumor is heâll snuff the life of anyone who crosses his path just by looking at youâŚ.and his territoryâs been getting bigger with each passing year. Weâve yet to figure out why, but we know that if he doesnât see you, he doesnât kill you. Considerinâ the rumors of who he used to be, thatâs a mercy.â
Gâraha kept his ears up, tracking the sound. It was definitely closer now. He kept his breathing even and calm, trying to remember what it had felt like in the World of Darkness, and how heâd managed to keep his composure then.
What he wouldnât give to have Wol by his side now, of all timesâŚ.
The clanking was suddenly loud enough that Gârahaâs ears flinched back at the sound. A large shadow fell across the dirt road in front of them. Two sets of horns, one set significantly longer than the other. A large, bat-like shape of wings.
And then the figure moved past the opening in the alley, and Gâraha felt himself freeze.
The figure looked more voidsent than man. Deep black armor with gold trim covered the body from the neck down. A glowing purple crystal embedded in the chest seemed to pulse with a light of its own; between that, the clawed gauntlets, and the taloned boots, figureâs appearance was already significantly less friendly.
Adding in the figureâs choice of head protection and the cloak on his back only made his appearance more monstrous. A white helm with a carved, scowling face, with no sign of a release lock to allow the helm to be removed. A pair of demonic horns rose from the forehead, just above the eyes, and another pair stretched out on either side like winged ears. The bat-shaped cloak stretched out behind the figure almost looked like proper wings.
The figure â the monster â the fiend â walked past the alley with slow purpose, growling with each breath taken.
The tension in the air from being this close had Gârahaâs heart quickening in instinctive panic.. What manner of voidsent was this? The last time he had felt this way was when he and Wol had faced down the Cloud of Darkness together, in an attempt to rescue those lost to the void from her clutches. Had a rift opened at Ghimlyt Dark? But that couldnât be possible, the aether had become too stale, too still.
UnlessâŚ
Gâraha waited until Biggsâ hand relaxed as the man in monster form moved past them. Then he tore himself away from the roegadyn and ran out in the street.
âWait, youââ
âWol, is that you?!â
The monster stopped, back still turned. It gave Gâraha a good, long look at the white symbol on the armored manâs back. A symbol flipped from what Gâraha had seen once before.
A sword, pointing down, framed on either side by thorn-like runic lines that ran past the swordâs blade.
More confirmation than anything else, and it caused dread to form in the miqoâteâs heart.
Biggs started whispering what sounded like a prayer from the alley.
The armored man did not move. His head turned slightly, but Gâraha did not see the carved, scowling face on the helm.
âThere is no Wol. There is only Archfiend.â
The words were articulated enough to be understood, but the heavy growl that came with them made Gârahaâs heart want to skip from terror. His legs trembled at the thought of running, getting away from whatever was now inhabiting the armor.
But if there was a chance his friend was still alive, was still hereâ
âBut you are the same man I met at the Crystal Tower,â Gâraha said. âBefore I sealed it and myself in slumber.â He paused. âOrâŚa part of him, at least. Am I wrong?â
Something in his words made Archfiend turn fully, taloned boots digging into the earth and leaving gouges behind. Red light glimmered from the scowling eyes carved into the helm as the head tilted slightly to stare at Gâraha.
His tail fluffed up immediately at the eye contact. It felt like a predator assessing prey, considering whether or not they were worthy of being hunted or considered too weak or useless to be consumed. Gâraha fought his instinct to look away, to turn tail and hide. His hand trembled at his sides, caught between breaking Archfiendâs gaze with him or grabbing the bow from his back.
ââŚyou hope heâs still here,â Archfiend said slowly. The growl in his voice made him hard to read. Was he threatening? Amused? âA familiar face, after so long.â
âA-among other things, yes.â If Archfiend was willing to talk, then Gâraha was going to take his chance. âWhat happened that causedâŚthis? IâmâŚtold you stayed in Ghimlyt Dark?â
The low snarl that ripped from Archfiend made Gârahaâs tail stand straight up against his back.
âBlack Rose killed the others. No one lives. No one. I bring despair to those who are to blame.â
DespairâŚwhere had he heard that? Did Wol or one of his allies mention that?
âCenturies after the event?â Gâraha asked.
âYes.â That sounded more like a hiss. âWhere despair exists, so do I. Where hope exists, I am drawn to destroy.â
âŚif this was what was left of his friend, it carried terrifying implications. Had this always lurked in Wolâs heart? Did he transform himself into a voidsent in order to bring about this result?
There had to be some way to get through to him. There had to be.
âEven the smallest hint of hope can lie in the deepest despair,â Gâraha said. âWhy else drive yourself to continue doing this? You could be helping the city-states pull themselves back together, orââ
âDespair is all that remains in this flesh.â
Gâraha felt the words die in his throat.
Archfiend gave him another, long look, tilting his head forward like he was considering something. âYour hope is not strong enough to be satisfying to snuff out. Your companionâs hope wavers far more.â
Biggs let out a strained yelp from the alley.
âTell me why I shouldnât kill you for disturbing my hunt.â
Archfiend slowly raised his right arm, hand gripping the air.
âWe aim to stop the Eighth Umbral Calamity from happening in the first place. They are looking to send me with the Crystal Tower back in time, and stop the Rejoining from ever occurring.â
The words came out of Gâraha quickly, and it was enough to cause Biggs to look out and mime a cut-off sign over his throat.
Archfiend paused. The shape of what seemed to be a blade formed into an 8 â or possibly an infinity symbol â shimmered in the air, half-summoned.
âTo that end, they are looking for a specific point in time to send me back, to prevent the event on our world from happening and to prevent the reflection from collapsing to be rejoined,â Gâraha continued. âI have faith it will be done, butâŚbut we need more data. A date to focus on. Data to create the devices we need.â He motioned to Archfiend. âYou â even if you are no longer him â carry at least some of that knowledge within you. So, pleaseââ
âIf you do this, will this place cease to exist?â
The question made Gâraha pause. He blinked, then glanced at Biggs. âWell, itâsâŚcertainly a possibilityâŚ.â
Biggs stiffened as Archfiend turned to look at him. âTh-thereâs no guarantee if weâll continue to exist or if our timeâll change as a result of our s-sending Gâraha back to the First. Y-ya might still be here, butâŚâ
Archfiend stared at Biggs. When the roegadyn pulled himself deeper into the alley, he slowly turned to look at Gâraha again.
A rush of dark purple energy that did not feel like the void overtook Archfiendâs head, horns and all, and when it vanished, so too did the helm.
Gârahaâs breath caught when he saw the white-haired head of the man heâd known before heâd sealed the tower.
Except that when Archfiend â Wol â opened his eyes, they were not the pale hazel Gâraha remembered. They were a deep, scarlet red, with no pupil to be seen, and glowed with an internal power than the Allagan Eye could not hope to match.
âYou carry a lot of hope for something that may not work,â Archfiend said. His face remained flat, like heâd forgotten how expressions worked. âAnd you come to one who is despair incarnate for help.â
âIf nothing else, it will give you access to our research, if you seek someone to blame,â Gâraha said. âThere is some speculation that Ascians were involved in manipulating the Garleans. IâmâŚcertain you would like a narrowed focus to more specific names?â
Biggs came out of the alley again, shaking his head rapidly.
Archfiend grinned. The sharp teeth of a predator, and not a hyur, stretched his jaw beyond what it was meant for. âA good bargain. You have my interest, Gâraha Tia. You had better hope it remains as it currently is.â
Why did Gâraha suddenly feel like heâd made a deal with a devil wearing his friendâs face?

Yes, I know I skipped over Day 9. The prompt is messing with me a little. But! I believe I've managed to figure something out for it.
In the meantime -- the prompt for today was "Avail," and I think I came up with a rather fun scene in response!
Spoilers for the Dawntrail Alliance Raid, specifically the second one!
âTo ensure I understand the situation: upon defeat, you managed to avail yourself of a different form in an attempt to escape Sareel Jaâs influence.â
âYes.â The response is curt and irritated.
âWell, tis certainly quite creative of you, but I doubt you were expecting your remaining energy to result in this state.â Cross motioned to the minion-sized figure sitting on the box next to her.
Ealdânarche folded his shortened arms and did his best to scowl around the eyepatch he wore over his distinctly changed eye. âIt will allow me to walk about unnoticed by you and yours.â
âOnly if you stay close. Anyone seeing you would mistake you for a personalized mammet.â
Ealdânarcheâs expression twisted into something disgusted and angry. âI am notââ
âI know you are not, but others will not.â Cross tilted her head at the miniaturized Zilartian, raising her eyebrows pointedly. âAnd as a result, you are going to either stay close to me, or you are going to be mistaken for something you are not and more than likely be seen as a childâs toy.â
The sounds the boy made definitely werenât of Etheirys.
Cross waited until her former foe had worked out his frustrations through words before she spoke up again. âYou couldnât have picked a better adventurer to follow anyway, Ealdânarche. I have experience with opponents turning themselves into smaller forms to avoid certain deathââ Omega was going to have a field day when they crossed paths again. ââand I have more access to this world than most. Youâre going to see the length and breadth of this world and learn more than you would have otherwise.â
The glowering look she got also seemed curious. âHow so?â
âIâm like the âseasoned adventurerâ the others speak of around here, more than likely. Someone who can and has felled gods, or beings near enough. Youâll get to see a great deal of this world whilst traveling with me.â
The cursing restarted immediately, leaving Cross laughing as Ealdânarche had a miniature tantrum at this revelation.
âI am bound to one with equal strength to her?!â Ealdânarche shrieked. âOf all the lives to be cursed withââ
Cross had to resist patting him on the head. Ealdânarche may be without his weapons, but a minion could still bite. âOh, relax. You just get to see things from my perspective. Now, câmon. Might as well talk to an electrope specialist. I want to make sure you wonât fall to pieces in the near future.â
âHmph.â Ealdânarche looked like he wanted to start cursing again. âYou would do this for a former foe? Why?â
âBecause youâre not the first to do something like this, and if thereâs a chance you could learn something, Iâm not about to let that slip by. Now, câmon. Better for you to ride in my bag than try to run and keep up with me.â
To be a sprout liveblogging the game must be a trip sometimes because youll get a crowd of ominous monks in darkened hoods keeping Forbidden Knowledge gathered around observing you all giggling to themselves like young girls at a sleepover
