While this photo is slightly creepy, I absolutely love vintage anesthesia and the history of surgery. This is from the 1920's when nitrous oxide, ether and chloroform were still the most popular methods for general anesthesia. In the 1930's these were replaced in popular use by sodium thiopental, an ultra short acting barbiturate that (according to my mom's experience) could leave you feeling prolonged somnolence or "dead tired/hung over" for days after the procedure. I got a "big girl" stethoscope to inspire my dream of pursuing a nursing degree.
