So. The last time I posted in this blog was to say that it had reached 200 followers. HUH.
Itâs now at 400 something. It actually has been for a while now, but activity stopped on this blog, and 2016 was...well, it was 2016, and it got 2016-er and 2016-er as 2016 progressed. BUT now that weâre in a new year, Iâve had an idea for bringing this baby back to life.
Iâm officially starting my as-yet untitled One Scene per Week project, which is pretty self-explanatory. This ENTIRE 2017, my goal is to get at least ONE scene from any Critical Role episode posted here on the blog each week. I originally intended to do one scene per DAY, but considering how long it actually takes me to transcribe and write out one scene, and considering what my work schedule looks like on a regular day, thatâs not feasible. The only rules Iâm putting on this so far is that a week is considered Sunday to Saturday, and I canât do two scenes from the same episode within two weeks of each other.
Anyone still on this blog is, of course, welcome to do the thing as well! The goal is to get one scene written per week, so all the editing stuff doesnât have to happen in the same week, but as long as youâre able to get something out in a week, then it counts!
Thatâs about it for now - just a little âhi hello this blog still existsâ post and a 2017 goal. Hope youâre all doing great out there and are excited for a new episode of Talks Machina tomorrow and a new episode of Critical Role on Thursday evening! :D

EVENT LAUNCH: Matt Mercer/NPC Week on Critical Wrote!
Hey Critters!
Welcome to Matt Mercer/NPC Week on Critical Wrote! As we know, our fave showâs illustrious DM will be celebrating his birthday on June 29, which is this Wednesday. To celebrate, this entire week, from June 26 to July 2, weâre having Matt Mercer/NPC week! To participate, all you need to do is submit works of your favorite NPC scene/moment from the show, and it can be literally any NPC that Matt has played on the show - from Greyspine, to Clarota, from Gilmore to the Briarwoods, from Victor the Powder Merchant to Tyriok the mapmaker, from Kaylie to Wilhand...There are TONS of NPCs and moments to go with, so youâre definitely not going to run out of ideas.
If youâre going to submit a scene, remember to tag your work as âCritWrote NPC Weekâ along with the usual tags. Have fun writing, everybody!
I have no real comprehension for social media, but I want to start writing fanfic. How do I even get started?
Hey hey! Youâve come to the somewhat right-ish place for this, despite Critical Wrote being less about actual fanfic and more about novelization of canon happenings in the story/show.
As with any project, fanfics start with an idea, sometimes even a reason. Some people write fanfics because they arenât happy with the way the story went, or arenât fans of how a character was developed, or they just want to write their own original characters into the universe of the story theyâre writing fanfic for, but also sometimes, you just want to take the characters of your favorite fandom, put them in some off-colour situation, and see how they deal with it, according to how you write them. For example - how would Vox Machina react individually and as a group to discovering a bathhouse on the outskirts of Vasselheim? Start from there - is there something in particular that you would love to see your favorite character react to but never got to because they werenât shown to have done so in canon? Is your OTP not yet canon but you would love to see them go on a first date already? If you canât yet come up with an idea of your own, check around to see if anyone has writing prompts for the fandom and/or characters you want to write for.
The next thing to remember is to have fun and go with your own flow. Donât put pressure on yourself to make your fanfics look or sound like your favorite ones - since they are your favorites, youâve put them on a pedestal and have thus set them as a standard. Use them as motivation, but not as models. Donât worry if you donât think your writing style is any good right away - we all have to start somewhere. I was 13 or 14 when I wrote my first fanfic, so about 15 years ago, at least, and my most recent work is leagues ahead of how I used to write. Youâll develop your own style as you keep writing. Even if you chose to get help from proofreaders or beta-readers to help clean up any errors, your style will always shine through. You can take small things that you like from authors that you favour, but never forget that you are your own writing style.
Once you have something written, of course, youâd like to put your work somewhere where it will be seen. My own personal recommendation is Archive Of Our Own.org, aka AO3. Once youâve uploaded your work into AO3, you might find it handy to link it to your social media channels like Tumblr or Twitter. Tagging your work makes sure that your posts are seen by the people you know would appreciate at least the fandom that you wrote in.
My last piece of advice - HAVE FUN! Fanfic-writing can be a hobby, a passion, something to pass the time or something to truly hone your writing skills so that you can go on to writing and publishing original works of your own once youâve gained enough confidence. Whatever fanfic-writing becomes for you, it should always be something FUN. Donât let negative comments or perennial haters get to you - there will be trolls, but you need not feed them. Write for yourself, write for the ones who enjoy your work, write because you want to!Â
There are other things about writing fanfic that I havenât included here, like why tagging warnings and squicks is important, the difference between AUs and crossovers, how to accurately âvoiceâ characters to keep them in-character without sacrificing your idea for the stories, etc. but these are things that are best learnt with experience. So I hope you do start writing, and once you do, I hope you keep writing, and I hope you end up loving it!
Is this verbatim what happens on critical role or is this fiction of fiction?
The dialogue, as well as some descriptions of places/events/people/etc. as given by Matt, are verbatim! Itâs like a ânovelizationâ of the show, like those movie tie-in novels. :D

For Twins Week: Do Not Go Far From Me (Episode 40: Desperate Measures)
Writer: @alaskathenerdfightingwholockian
Beta/Editor: Open
Episode:Â 40, Desperate Measures
Summary: The twins seek each other out after the Conclaveâs attack.
Note:Â I split this scene into several smaller ones. I submitted one recently that was very long, and I promise I did not realize that until Iâd already submitted it. I am SO SORRY.
Vax took his sisterâs hand and pulled her aside. He clasped her hand in both of his. âI donât know what is going to happen in the following hours,â he said. He blinked rapidly and took a breath. âDo not go far from me.â Vex looked down. He pulled her chin back up. âIf we are out of earshot, you are too far from me.â
Vex sniffed and looked at him.
"Do not go far from me,â he said.
She drew a ragged breath. âDo you think this is whatâŚâ Tears spilled over her cheeks. âDo you think this is what mother saw before she died?â
Vax pulled her into a hug and buried his face in her shoulder. He fought to keep his own tears out of his voice. âDo not go far from me.â
Vex clutched him tightly. âI wonât,â she said. âI swear.â
Vax wiped his eyes on her cloak before looking up at her again. She pulled him close once more before returning to the child she was bandaging.
Vax pulled an old shirt from his bag and cut it into slings for the people who needed them. He touched Vexâs shoulder before helping the child into one.
A large hand pulled him away. He spun around to see Grog towering over him.
Vax tried to go back to his sister, but Grog held him in place.
"Sorry to break up, um, an awkward moment,â the goliath said. "Vax, do you have a moment?â
Vex finished helping the boy and came to stand beside her brother.
"What do you need?â Vax asked.
Grog looked at Vex. "May I speak to you⌠alone? No offense, Vex.â
Vex shook her head and wiped at the corners of her eyes. âNone taken.â She squeezed her brotherâs hand and took the remaining slings to distribute.
Grog pulled Vax into an alcove. âYou and I may have had some⌠friction recently,â he said. âAnd we have our differences, but weâre on the same side.â Vax furrowed his brow. âPercy needs you downstairs. Will you come with me?â
Vax looked behind him at his sister. She was looking in their direction. âWhat is it? What does he need?â
Grogâs eyes roamed the room full of civilians. âI would tell you, but I donât want to frighten anyone in this room. Itâs about the skull, and I can only bring one. Percyâs request.â
Vax looked at his sister again. âWait here.â He started to walk toward her.
Grog caught his shoulder. âNo, I have to come with you!â
Vax pulled away. âJust wait a second!â
He touched Vexâs arm. She turned to look at him. âIâm going downstairs,â he whispered. âIf I am not back here in five minutes, I want you to come down. Do you understand?â He took his sisterâs hand again. âAnd I say that because I need you. You are stronger than me, and I will need you. Tend to the wounded.â He kissed her cheek. âFive minutes.â
Vex nodded and went back to bandaging a young woman, and Vax followed Grog.
At the head of the stairs, Grog stopped and looked around. Vax looked up at him curiously.
"This keep is fuckinâ drafty,â Grog said, and continued down the stairs.
For Twins Week: I Have a Sister (Episode 32: Against the Tide of Bone)
Writer: @alaskathenerdfightingwholockian
Beta/Editor: Open
Episode: 32, Against the Tide of Bone
Summary:Â Vax expresses his concern at Percyâs behavior.
Vax watched his friends nod off by the soft glow of Pikeâs astral form. The black smoke swirled slowly around Percivalâs body with each breath he drew.
The soft sounds of breathing filling the earthen tunnel grew slower and more regular. The light Pike gave off dimmed and pulsed gently.
Vax reached down and nudged Percyâs shoulder.
Percy groaned and blinked up at Vax. âHm? What?â The smoke retreated into his shadow.
   "Hi,â Vax said.
Percy rubbed his eyes and pushed himself into a sitting position. âYes?â
Vax picked at the dirt under his fingernails. âI want you to get some sleep, but I want to talk for a minute.â
Percy took a sip from his waterskin. âI donât know if I can do both those things, but okay.â
Vax smiled. âThatâs okay; we can separate them.â He watched Percy rub off his glasses and place them on the bridge of his nose. The smoke swirled from his sleeves, briefly obscuring his face. âThis thingâŚâ Vax began. âThis thingâŚâ
Percy scratched his nose, and for a second it seemed almost⌠beak-like. âYes?â
Vax narrowed his eyes. âWhat do you really know about it? How do we know that this thing isnât whispering in Sylasâs ear? What do you really know about this thing?â
Percy blinked at him. âI donât know anything about this thing. Except thatâŚâ He furrowed his brow and looked down at his hands. âThis last timeâŚâ He shook his head and looked back up at Vax. âThis last time was different than the first time. This last time didnâtâŚâ He squeezed his eyes shut and sighed. He opened them, and Vax could swear in the dim light shadows swirled in Percyâs irises. âThis last time, I felt more like me, and less⌠like I was being drawn somewhere. I wasnât entirely me, but I was more⌠Itâs hard to describeâŚâ Percy chewed his lip. âI felt like⌠I hadâŚâ He looked at Vax again. His eyes seemed a little clearer. ââŚcontained it a bit. I feel like maybe⌠maybe I can⌠keep it under check? I donât know.â
Vax nodded slowly, watching Percivalâs eyes. âI want to tell you something.â He pulled his cloak closer to him. âWeâre almost like family now. And I have seen you do a many great things.â His eyes drifted to the unnaturally shifting shadow behind his friend. âAnd you have earned my trust.â He looked up and stared straight into de Roloâs eyes. âBut if you hurt my sister, if you hurt anyone else in this group inadvertentlyâŚâ He pulled his Keen Dagger out of its sheath.
Percy nodded. âI would expect no less.â
Vax held his gaze a moment. âWell alright then.â He put his dagger away.
   "Vax?â Percy said.
   Vax looked up.
Percy smiled. âI have a sister!â he said. The shadows around him seemed a little less dark. For a moment he looked almost like an excited child.
Vax looked at his own sister curled up with Trinket. He smiled. âItâs pretty cool, isnât it?â
"IâmâŚâ Percy bit his lip, but the smile never quite left his face. "Iâm hoping.â
Vax nodded. âWell⌠hold onto that.â He patted Percyâs arm.
   "I shall.â
Vax looked over at Grog and grinned. "Can I borrow just a pinch of your black powder?â
Percy grimaced. âNo, Iâm running really low, no.â
   "Just a finger dab?â
"No⌠Oh, god, yes, yesâŚâ Percy closed his eyes and thrust the tube at Vax.
Vax chuckled as he wet his finger and traced an obscene drawing on the goliathâs forehead.
Percy shook his head and rolled to face away from him.
Vax turned to say something to Keyleth, but found her asleep. He brushed a lock of hair off her cheek and settled against Trinket beside his sister. She shivered in her sleep. Vax tucked her cloak more tightly around her.
The smoke had curled up around Percivalâs form again. He tossed in his sleep. He murmured Cassandraâs name and whimpered.
Vax looked up at the Spiritual Guardian. He looked at the symbol of Sarenrae on the black of his hand, glowing slightly in tandem with Pikeâs soft breathing. He turned his face against Trinketâs fur, closed his eyes, and drifted off to sleep.
For Twins Week: The Knick Knacks of Kaa (Episode 43: Return to Vasselheim)
Writer:Â @alaskathenerdfightingwholockian
Beta/Editor:Â Open
Episode:Â 43, Return to Vasselheim
Summary:Â Strapped for cash, Vox Machina & friends engage in some rather intense haggling.
The party waded through the crowd on the busiest street in Vasselheim. Grog led, with Vex close at his side. Her eyes darted around the crowd, back to Grog frequently. They quite literally couldnât afford any pickpockets, any slip-ups with the precious little gold they had.
They approached a cart beside a small tent. The man next to it looked to the side. He caught sight of Grog and grinned.
   Vex wanted to slap him.
"You!â he exclaimed. "I remember you! Oh, itâs been quite some time!â
Vex pushed to the front and shoved a finger in the manâs face. âYou!â
He looked beyond her to Grog. âStep on over here, sir! I would love nothing more than-â
"YouâŚâ Vex said. She gritted her teeth as she pushed Grog further back. His confused protests went unheeded.
"Yes, can I help you-â the salesman began.
"âŚsneaky, motherâŚâ Vex whipped around to face Grog. "Is he the one?â
   "Wha-â
"Is he the one that âhaggledâ with you? The one that you traded all our-â
"Yeah, and I got a really great deal!â Grog said.
"He got a fantastic deal last time!â the man said.
"You are blowing my cover!â Grog whispered.
"Heâs quite a customer!â the man said.
"What are you doing?â Grog asked.
"Iâm sorry, is there a problem?â the salesman asked.
"No, no!â Grog said. He pushed Vex aside. She shrugged off his arm and stood even with him.
Her lip curled as she looked the merchant over. He seemed to have done annoyingly well since their last "dealâ.
"No problem at all,â Grog said. "Youâll be doing business with me.â
Vex rolled her eyes. She shot a death glare at her brother laughing his ass off.
"Just sit back, love, and watch a pro work,â Grog told her.
   Vaxâs laughter redoubled.
   "So-â the man said.
"Heâs a cart! Heâs a stupid cart salesman!â Vex said. She glared at her brother while he composed himself.
Percy recovered from his own laughing fit and put a hand on her shoulder. "We are going to learn something very valuable right now!â
Vexâs icy glare shifted to him. He dropped his hand.
"Look, I donât know if youâve noticed,â Grog said, "but a lot of these twats below me need âhealing potionsâ or whatever.â
Vex inhaled deeply. She looked at Vax and jerked her head toward Grog.
"Do you have anything like that on you?â Grog asked.
The salesman clasped his hands together and laughed. "Oh, ho ho! Do I! Do not worry sir! Hold on just a moment!â He disappeared into the tent with a rustle of silks.
Vex looked to Keyleth and gestured roughly at Grog. âKeyleth-â She clenched her fist. âHold Person or something to shut him up?â
Vax finally came to her aid. âYeah, itâs funny, but we donât have that much gold, do we?â
"We donât have anything!â Vex said.
Grog looked down at her. "Iâve got sixty-five hundred gold to spend and I mean to spend quite a bit of it.â
Vex groaned. Keyleth bit her lip. Percy bit his hand to stifle laughter.
"Music to my ears!â rang out from the tent.
Vex and Percy both slapped their faces into their hands.
The salesman brought out a carved wooden box of vials and set it before them. "So! Potions of Healing, you say?â He pulled out a pair of glass tubes and waved them in front of Grogâs face. âTwo Superior Healing Potions!â He gestured to a trio on the table. âThree Greater Healing Potions.â He pointed to the rest with a flourish. âAnd ten regular Potions of Healing, at your disposal should you require them, yes!â
   Grog opened his mouth.
Vex slapped her hand over it.
Vax pulled him aside. âGrog,â he said. âWhat about this: You are reeeallly strong, and really good at killing things, and my left- left?- left nut still has a dent in it. You are really fucking strong! You are the best there is at what you do.â
"And by far a handsome and intelligent salesman!â the merchant said.
Vax looked over. "Please shut up.â
Vex cracked a smile for what felt like the first time in ages.
Vax turned back to Grog. âMy sister is very good at-â He tilted his head. âDo you know what math is?â
   Grog blinked at him. âMathis?â
Vex laughed with the party in spite of herself.
Vax took a breath to steady himself. âVex'ahlia is very good at, uhâŚâ
"I donât even want to deal with this shit now!â Vex said.
Vax put a hand on her shoulder. "She is an excellent shopper,â he said. âIâm telling you- You know how you take thingsâ skulls and turn them into, like, raspberry jam?â
Grog nodded. âYeah, like a paste!â
"Yeah,â Vax said. "Thatâs what she does with money. And, Iâm just sayingâŚâ he sighed. âWe have our differences, and I know youâre stronger than me, and Iâm saying, as strong as you are, thatâs as good as she is with shiny.â He clapped Vex on the back.
"And yet she was so abrasive when she arrived!â the man said.
"I said shut uuup!â Vax hissed.
   "Darling,â Vex said.
   "Shiny!â Grog said behind her.
"Youâre lucky I donâtâŚâ Vex looked around her. She saw Trinket lingering behind the group and grinned. "Trinket!â she called.
Vax was still trying to bring Grog around. âIf we can keep more shiny, you and I can get drunk!â he whispered.
Trinket lumbered up to Vexâs side. âHave you seen my pet bear?â she asked.
The salesman took a few steps back.
Vex smiled. âHe loves potion salesmen!â
"Yeah, Iâm not sure if youâre aware of this,â Grog said.
Vax whispered in his sisterâs ear. "I just did it.â
Vex quickly pecked him on the cheek.
"Iâm like, the current reigning champion of the Crucible,â Grog continued. "And with that title comes many things, like people that manage your shinies.â Vex smiled. âI would like to introduce you to my shiny manager, Vex.â
Vex squared her shoulders and gave Trinket a pat on the head.
"Buckle up, my friend,â Vax said.
The salesman turned his head. "This one? Really?â
Kash blinked and looked at Vax. âWhy was he holding your nut?â
   They waved him off.
Vex turned back to the matter at hand. âLook, she said. "Iâm willing to trade you some very powerful magical items, for some schmeezly little potions that heal people.â
The salesman smiled slimily at her. âHow many would you like? What do you want?â
She held his gaze. âI want them all. How much?â
He raised his eyebrows. âAll of them?â
Vax crossed his arms at his sisterâs side. âBulk.â
The man chuckled. âHm! Well then, let me do my math here.â He bent over an abacus, moving beads back and forth. Vex squinted at him. This was rather⌠showy math.
"Thatâs a lot of potions,â Scanlan said. "Do we really need all of them?â
"Thereâs only two Superiors,â Vex said.
"By the way, buddy, as youâre adding that up, Iâd like to say, tread lightly or Iâm gonna tell Vanessa and youâll have trouble getting anything from the Take ever again,â Kash said.
The man lifted his finger off the abacus and looked up toward Kash. âThe⌠Take? Are you with the Take?â
Vex, Vax, and Keyleth pulled their armor aside to reveal their brands.
"Oh, oh did you not see these? These amazingâŚâ Vex said.
"Thatâs right, we get union discounts,â Keyleth said.
"WellâŚâ the man said. He flicked a couple beads on his abacus. "Yes, there is indeed a discount with the TakeâŚâ
Vex reached across her brother to pat Kash on the shoulder. âI like you more and more, Kashaw, every time you speak.â
"Well done, well done,â Percy said.
"Most people do,â Kash said. âJust ask Keyleth.â
Keyleth started laughing awkwardly loudly. Vexâs eyes narrowed.
"So, with the⌠with the friendship discountâŚâ the salesman said. "Um⌠That would be six thousand, five hundred gold pieces for the lot.â
Vex raised her eyebrows. âIâm sorry, how much?â
"Six thousand, five hundred gold pieces for the lot.â
   "Oh, okayâŚâ
   "With the discount!â
"Right, with the discountâŚâ Vex muttered.
   "Thatâs so coincidentalâŚâ Scanlan said.
   "Thatâs crazy!â Grog said.
   "What if-â Vex started.
"Thatâs exactly what Grog offered him!â Scanlan said.
"Thatâs what I have!â Grog said.
Vex shook her head. "How about, instead of that, I trade you-â
   "Seven thousand!â Grog said.
Vex barely kept herself from hitting him. She forced a smile. "Thank you, Grog,â she said.
"Stick to the killing!â Vax whispered.
â-these magical items,â Vex continued. She reached into her bag and pulled out the handful of knick knacks sheâd gathered from who knows where.
Scanlan put a hand up. "Vex. No. You canât. You canât possibly trade that. Itâs too valuable. What are you doing.â
Vex shook her head dramatically. âWell I know, but, I mean, where else are we going to find a vendor-â
"Those are the Knick Knacks of Kaa!â Scanlan said.
Vex nodded. "I know! Theyâre quite valuable, but he said six thousand, six hudred, and nnn! And we know this will cover that!â
"I canât-â Scanlan turned to the potion salesman. "Please sir. Please. Donât take advantage of us by taking these things from us. Theyâre too valuable. Please, I beg of you.â
"What have you pulled out?â Percy asked.
"The Knick Knacks of Kaa,â Scanlan said.
"The Knick Knacks of Kaa!â Percy said. "No, not the Knick Knacks of Kaa!â
Vex sighed to cover a giggle. Vax and Kash were having a stare down while trying to quiet Keyleth.
"Let me seeâŚâ the man said. He reached out toward the objects.
"Now Iâm doubting-â Vex pulled the cluster of items closer to her chest. âNo, you know what, maybe I shouldnât trade these.â
Vax nodded emphatically. âPut 'em away. Put 'em away.â
"I donât understand,â Grog said. "I thought they were just, like, little nothinâ thingsâŚâ
Zahra grabbed Grogâs arm and yanked him behind the loose semicircle forming around the merchant. âGrog!â she said. âI have a flask!â She pulled out a small hip flask and handed it to him.
"I knew I liked you!â Grog said. He took a gulp. "Oh, thatâs good!â
"Iâll take some too as well.â Zahra took a swig.
Vex kept her carefully reluctant eyes trained on the salesman.
"N-no, no no, pu them on the table please!â The man smiled. âJust in casies!â
Scanlan looked back to Grog and Zahra. âGrog⌠make sure no one is watching.â
As Vex reached forward to put one of the âKnick Knacks of Kaaâ on the table, she saw the slightest flick of Keylethâs wrist. As the small inkwell touched the wood, a puff of air swirled about it. Vex trembled her hand as she removed it.
The merchantâs eyes widened slightly. âHmâŚâ He pulled out a small eyeglass. âWell, the craftmanship is-â He looked up at Vex. â-decent.â
   Vex smiled.
As the man touched the item to rotate it, the table began to shake. Vex saw Zahra staring intently at it.
Percyâs fingers danced at his side.
The salesmanâs eyes widened again. He straightened up. âHm,â he said. âThese seem fair enough.â He studied Vex a moment. âI would say, include these in the transaction and Iâd be willing to drop the cost by about⌠five hundred gold pieces? Put it at an even six thousand.â
Vex raised her eyebrows and let out a huff of air. âDarling!â She snatched the inkwell off the table. âDo you have any idea how much these are worth?â
The merchant looked at her. âI do, actually. Iâm quite the appraiser. Kind of my business.â
Vex glared at the man. âI know when somebodyâs trying to swindle me, darling.â
"Well then, step away! You donât need my business, obviously.â The salesman looked over her head at Grog. "Is this how your 'shinyâ manager deals with your shiny?â
Vexâs nostrils flared. âTell you what,â she said. âTake two thousand off your asking price, and we have a deal.â
The man laughed. âThat is ridiculous! No!â
"Howâs your family?â Kash said. Vex looked at him and grinned.
The manâs face contracted. "What does that mean?â
"Just curious how everyoneâs doing,â Kash continued. He conspicuously stretched his scar-covered arm. "Everybody healthy? Happy?â
Grog came up behind Kash. âYeah, are they well?â he asked. âIn one piece?â
Zahra stood beside Grog, her silver eyes betraying no emotion. âHave you seen your wife?â
The three of them loomed over the merchant, Kashâs scars visible, Zahraâs horns turned half toward him, Grog working his muscular shoulders.
The merchant gulped. âUm⌠Theyâre fine. Uh⌠quite fine. Yes.â He looked back at Vex, but his eyes kept darting to the trio at her side. âA thousand gold off the asking price?â
She smirked. âTwo thousand gold off the asking price.â
He sputtered. âTh-thatâs ridiculous! Itâs not even- Please!â
Kash pointed behind him at Grog. âHave you heard him talk about paste?â
The salesmanâs mouth opened and closed like a goldfish. ââŚThirteen hundred off the asking price. Nothing more! Nothing more!â
Vax stepped around his sister to Grogâs side. He pulled a dagger out of his belt, locked eyes with the merchant, and dragged the knife down Grogâs bicep.
"He has a lip collection,â Percy said.
The man looked beyond the group, searching for guards on the thoroughfare. "Perhaps, uhâŚâ he said loudly.
"Keep your voice down,â Grog said. Blood poured down his arm, dripping over Vaxâs hand to the cobblestones below.
"I would need-â the man started. He swallowed.
"Thereâs no magic here, friend,â Vax said.
Vex stayed her brotherâs bloody hand. "Fifteen hundred off the asking price,â she said. âAnd you have a deal.â
Murmurs and nods of agreement chorused through the party. Vex held the manâs gaze, blood still running over her hand and her brotherâs.
The salesmanâs eyes lingered on their hands. âFive thousand gold, knick knacks, and, uh⌠weâre all good? Yes?â He laughed nervously.
"Oh, give the dog a bone,â Vax said. His eyes were still fixed on the manâs face.
   "Yes,â Vex said.
"Alright, here you areâŚâ the merchant said. "Please, now⌠It would be wondrous, after we complete this transaction, that we never meet again.â
Vex'ahlia smiled wickedly at him. âOh dear. Iâm afraid Iâve already Hunterâs Marked you.â
The man shrank further back from her. âI donât even know what that meansâŚâ
   Her brother laughed.
The merchant looked behind them at another customer. âWeâre closed!â He held a hand out timidly for the gold.
"Oh, right! Of course, yes! Let me just count up this littleâŚâ Vex reached reluctantly for her purse.
"Kash, Zahra, you should probably contribute,â Scanlan said.
"Should I count that?â Grog asked Vex.
Vex took a breath and smiled tightly at Grog. "No, thatâs alright, dear.â She handed the sum to the salesman. âFive thousand gold.â
"You donât think I can get to five thousand faster than you can?â Grog said.
Vex rolled her eyes. "Oh, and here. These⌠very valuable items.â
"One, three, five thousand.â Grog demonstrated his astounding math skills for Zahra.
The merchant shoved the potions toward them. "Good day!â
"Itâs been a pleasure,â Kash said.
   Vex snickered.
A small tulip appeared in Keylethâs hand. The merchant took it from her before dropping it in confusion. "Thank you!â she said.
Vex looked at Kash beside her as the salesman ducked into his tent. âWe make a pretty good team,â she said.
Grog tapped Vax on the shoulder. âNot that itâs, like- Not for nothinâ, but will you take this fuckinâ dagger out of my arm?â
Vax grabbed the dagger and flipped it back into his belt.
Vex reached behind her and sent a surge of healing energy through Grogâs arm.
"Youâre a good influence on us,â Percy was saying to Keyleth, "but weâre a terrible influence on you.â
   Keyleth nodded. âThatâs true.â
   "Vex,â Scanlan said.
   "Yes?"Â
   "He said two Superior.â
Vex looked down at the potions. She slammed her hand on the table. âHe did say two Superior! I knew he said two Superior!â She ran into the tent with Scanlan at her heels.
"Actually! Dear!â she said. "I believe you left one of the potions off the table.â
The salesman looked at who was with her and raised his chin a bit. âThe Superior potions are five thousand gold a piece baseline.â
Vex raised her own chin. âBut you said you had two Superior, and you said all the potions for the amount we said.â
The man crossed his arms. âI said all the ones I had placed on the table before you.â
âAh! Thereâs so much blood on this fucking dagger!â Vax called from outside.
Kash entered the tent and stood beside Vex.
"Are you going back on your word?â she asked.
"Youâve made a grand deal with what we said. If you continue to push this, Iâm afraid Iâm going to have to get the guards,â the merchant said.
Kash looked to Vex. âMy guess is he couldnât get to the front of the tent by the time we got to him,â he said. âBut thatâs up to you.â He looked at the salesman. âWeâre just guests here.â
Vex sized up the merchant. âSuperior Schmuperior,â she muttered. âNo, thatâs alright,â she said. âI know theyâre expensive.â She looked at her friends and smiled. âAnd weâve already taken enough advantage.â
She narrowed her eyes. Without taking her eyes off the man, she took out one of the potions. She popped the cork, swirled the vial, and sniffed it. Herbs. Divine power. She nodded. She recorked the bottle and stowed it away. They all left the tent.
"We did very well,â Percy said, "and there are other things we should think about purchasing.â
   "Youâre right,â Vex said.
   On to powder, she supposed.
Fighting these dragons was getting more expensive by the minute.

*reminds people there's still ~2 days left in Keyleth week which is awesome and fun and I didn't even realized how much I love Keyleth until I started writing her seriously I highly reccommend it*
Awww! Glad youâve enjoyed writing Keyleth! Itâs so nice to see that youâve gained a new appreciation for her too while writing for her!
And thanks for this little shout-out! Originally, there really should only be two days left, but since I was a day late in launching Keyleth Week, Iâm extending it one more day as well! So Keyleth Week now ends on Sunday, May 15th, instead! So thereâs one more day to get your Keyleth Week works in!

As he begins to move away, Vex calls out, âJarett? Are you up for it?â
Jarett looks back over his shoulder, his usual dry humor fully restored. âI mean, if the pay is good, yes.â
âIt will be,â Vex assures him. âJarettâs up for anything,â she adds with a little saucy smile.
Jarett laughs and taps the side of his nose. âYou understand. Then, with a little grimace as he pulls sore ribs the wrong way, he finishes, âI will talk to you in the morning. I think a bit of rest is on order.â He waves and heads up the stairs and out of sight.
P84-85 (See beta note 3)
âItâs good, right?â Tiberius says brightly. I had one yesterday. Come, weâll move you to the guest room.â
Vex hesitates. âMaybe we should stay down here,â she says.

Desmond holds his gaze for a long moment, then seems to resign himself to the inevitable. âOkay,â he sighs.
âI volunteer to sleep down here with him in the room,â Grog offers suddenly.
Tiberius shakes his head. âHeâll sleep in my quarters.â
âIs it safer down here? Vex says, glancing at her brother.
âIn a locked cell with Grog?â Vax says. âThatâs pretty safe.â
But Vex frowns at him. âI think itâs better to bring him upstairs,â she says. âIt the door is locked, we canât get to him very quickly.

The others start to discuss the situation amongst themselves, and Desmond takes advantage of their distraction to lean into Vax and whisper, âIs where Iâm sleepinâ going to be away from him?â
Vax follows him line of vision and sees Percy leaning against the far wall. His face is drawn and hard, smudged with soot and blood. He looks exhausted, with dark, bruise-like shadows under his eyes, but Vax can tell from the stubborn set of his shoulders that the gunslinger has no intention of resting any time soon.
Frowning unhappily, Vax turned back to the boy beside him. âThere is a lot of history for Percy wrapped up in this, and he has done you wrong, no question, butâŚâ He struggles for the right words, unsure how to convince they boy of things that he himself doesnât know. Perhaps it is best to leave the âwhyâ for another day. He looks Desmond in the eye, willing him to understand the truth of his words.
P107-109 (See beta note 3)
âThe answer is yes,â he says firmly. âYou will be separated from Percival, you will be protected, and you have my word.â
There is a brief pause. Then Desmond nods. âOkay,â he whispers. âI trust you.â Tears spring into the young manâs eyes as the events of the last few days begin to truly catch up with him. âPlease, please donât let them kill me.â
Vax reaches out and places a warm hand on his shoulder. âWe may be fuck-ups, but weâre not without ability. You have my word.â

P119, line 2
Grimacing to himself, Vax
P120, lines 1-2
lets out a long, shaking breath. For a moment, he
Beta note 1: You need commas! Lots of them!
Beta note 2: Watch out for insubstantial repeated phrases. In this particular piece, I caught âfor a momentâ and other similar phrases quite often. Repetition attracts the readerâs attention, which can be useful when writing symbolism, foreshadowing, etc., but it can also be distracting if the writer repeats something that the reader doesnât need to pay attention to.
Beta note 3: Thereâs some trouble with dialog formatting, which means that my paragraph system gets a little wonky about halfway through, but oh well. Here are two main things to keep in mind.
One, dialog always goes on the same line as the speech tag. Paragraphs 39-40, for example, are both dedicated to Grog speaking, but you started a new paragraph between âsaysâ and when he actually starts talking. These should not be separated.
Two, most of the time, the actions that a character takes before, during, and/or after speech should go as close to the dialog as possible. Paragraphs 63-66 are a good place to look for this. You have this section written as such:
Vex frowns at her brother, something like frustrated concern clouding her features.
âWith all this previous experience,â She says, strain evident on the last two words, âdo you know how to ward against them? Vax shakes his head, offering a slightly sheepish quirk of the lips.
âAll I know is how to stick my face into beehives, apparently.â Vex cocks an eyebrow in agreement then turns to the others.
âDoes anybody know how to protect against these stalkers?â
The biggest source of confusion here is that Vex appears to be the one saying âAll I know is how to stick my face into beehivesâ because her action (cocking an eyebrow) is connected to this line of dialog. When I was editing, I moved the charactersâ actions as close to their dialog as I could, and I created new paragraphs every time the focus shifted to a different character. My edit turned out like this:
Vex frowns at her brother, frustrated concern clouding her features. âWith all this previous experience,â she says, her voice straining, âdo you know how to ward against them?â
Vax shakes his head, offering a slightly sheepish quirk of his lips. âAll I know is how to stick my face into beehives, apparently.â
Vex cocks an eyebrow in agreement then turns to the others. âDoes anybody know how to protect against these stalkers?â she asks.
By keeping the charactersâ actions and dialog together, the reader can move more easily through the story, and it prevents any confusion over which person is speaking.
Beta note 4: It is not necessary to capitalize a characterâs race or class. The first reason is because the Player Handbook does not, and thatâs pretty much the guideline. The second reason, in more thorough terms, is because a characterâs class is like their job and their race (unlike race in the real world) is like their species. Itâs like if I introduced myself as Rachel, the Human Student. Or Judy in Zootopia introduced herself as the Bunny Cop. Or the vampire dad in Twilight introduced himself as the Vampire Doctor. (Iâm sorry for the last oneâitâs all I could think of.) Itâs just not necessary.Â

Beta note: A large point of contention among fiction writers is dialog tags. In this piece, you have all sorts of different tagsâcalls, barks, coughs, greets, prods, states, cackles, suggests, concurs, starts, replies, begins, advises, points out, answers, offers, murmurs, explains, snorts, specifies, quip, notes, echoes, wheezes, describes, mutters, corrects, repeats, adds, acknowledges, agrees, remarks, exclaims, protests, promises, returns, demands, whispers, laughs, shouts, says, and asks are most of them.
I feel like most of us were taught in school to never use âsayâ or âaskâ in the interest of creativity or something. Some writers think that you should only use âsayâ and âask.â They think this because when we read dialog, our brains can skim over âsayâ and âaskâ almost as if theyâre not there, allowing the reader to move through the dialog effortlessly. In short, the argument is that dialog tags can be distracting.
I had a writing professor a couple years ago who urged my class to cut all dialog tags except for âsayâ and âaskâ out of our writing. At first, I was really reluctant. I thought that dialog tags gave my writing character and flair. But then the more I cut them out, the more I felt like my writing improved. I realized, then, that itâs a matter of focus. Instead of focusing on how a character says something, I began to focus on what the characters says. I do realize that this projectâthis blog as a wholeâis something of an anomaly because the writers are creatively transcribing the show and are thus rather limited in terms of artistic license. However, I think the matter of focus still stands:Â What do you think is most important while writing?
I am not going to ask you to change your dialog tags. I only changed two of them when I thought the original ones didnât make sense in context. I am not going to tell you it would be better or worse if you kept or changed the original tags. Itâs just a suggestion, something to keep in mind.
Iâm sorry the beta note is so long. I justâŚI really like writing, and I really like editing, and I might as well use my degree for something.
And, as always, donât hesitate to drop me an ask if something Iâve written is unclear!

*Vax simply arched his eyebrows cheekily and let Gilmore sputter his excuse. Vax knew what he heard, and he was more than willing to wait until Gilmore stopped squirming and admit his mistake.
P21-23 (See beta note 1)
Tiberius interrupted Gilmoreâs groveling. He said, âActually, Vax, he was correct. He said your name correctly but mixed it with your sisterâs. So maybe you owe him a little something.â
After Tiberius spoke, Keyleth couldnât help herself, and words tumbled from her lips. âHe said Vaxâahlia,â she blurted out, then mentally kicked herself, even as Tiberius chimed in again in agreement.
Vax glanced back at his friends and gave them a testy âshut upâ before returning his attention to Gilmore, who was quite embarrassed by this turn of events. Vax patted the other manâs hand. âDonât you worry,â he said. âWe have come from far and awayâyou would not believe the shit we have been through. But I donât want to talk about me. Beta note 1: Thereâs a little trouble with dialog formatting, which means that my paragraph system is a little wonky, but oh well. Something to keep in mind is that, most of the time, the actions that a character takes before, during, and/or after speaking should go as close to the dialog as possible. Paragraphs 5-8 are a good place to look for this. You have this section written as such:
âBrother,â Vexâahlia murmured, âyou should get that evil Clarota helmet checked out, and see what good it does us.â Vaxâs lips curved into a grin as he reached up one hand and tapped the skull cap he wore.
You mean this one..?â
âYes,â Vex replied, deadpan, used to her twinâs antics, âthat one.â Keyleth moved a little closer and spoke softly to the Rogue.
âI think you should take point on this,â Keyleth said. Those who heard the Druidâs words murmured their agreement.
Luckily, this particular instance doesnât prevent the reader from understanding who is saying what. Your dialog tags are clear, so there isnât any confusion with that. However, while writing dialog, you should generally create new paragraphs every time the focus shifts to a new character. My edit turned out like this:
âBrother,â Vexâahlia murmured, âyou should get that evil Clarota helmet checked out and see what good it does us.â
Vaxâs lips curved into a grin as he reached up one hand and tapped the skull cap he wore. âYou mean this one?â he asked.
âYes,â Vex deadpanned, used to her twinâs antics. âThat one.â
Keyleth moved a little closer and spoke softly to the rogue. âI think you should be the point man here,â she said. Those who heard the druidâs words murmured their agreement.
All I really did was move the characterâs actions closer to their dialog. (Well. I also listened to this part of the episode because âyou should take point on thisâ didnât sound right. But you get the point.)
Beta note 2: It is not necessary to capitalize a characterâs race or class. The first reason is because the Player Handbook does not, and thatâs pretty much the guideline. The second reason, in more thorough terms, is because a characterâs class is like their job and their race (unlike race in the real world) is more like their species. Itâs like if I introduced myself as Rachel, the Human Student. Or Judy in Zootopia introduced herself as the Bunny Cop. Or the vampire dad in Twilight introduced himself as the Vampire Doctor. (Iâm sorry for the last oneâitâs all I could think of.) Itâs just not necessary.
Beta note 3: You used a lot of semicolons, and the majority of the semicolons are actually fine on a technical level. However, semicolons are typically pretty formal, and I didnât think that they fit the tone of this piece, which is why I changed many of them to a more informal dash or turned the compound sentence into two sentences.Â
And, as always, please donât hesitate to send me an ask if something Iâve written is unclear!

Summary:Â Vax and Keyleth resolve things that came up in Castle Whitestone.
âââââââââââââ-
A strange, alien presence invaded Keylethâs meditation.
She jumped and yanked her hand away. As her vision cleared, she saw Vax standing near her, looking confused and a little hurt. She lowered her arms slowly and pointed toward the Sun Tree. âI was just talking to the treeâŚâ she said. Vax raised an eyebrow. âUh⌠It talked backâŚâ
He held her gaze. She turned her head to look back at the feast. Percy, Vex, Scanlan, Grog, and Pike turned back to the food and looked pointedly away from them.
She pursed her lips and looked back at Vax. Might as well get it over with. âIâm⌠I donât knowâŚâ she said. She looked back at Vox Machina, then back at Vax. âIâm really confused.â
He nodded to himself. âAlright.â He started to walk away.
She caught his hand. âWait, wait! Wait!â He stopped. She dropped his hand. Vexâs head turned back away from them. Keyleth bit her lip. âIâd⌠be lying if I said oft at night when I go to sleep, your face is the last thing that crosses my mind.â Vax looked down. Keyleth looked at the Sun Tree. âBut with the weight of the world andâŚâ She looked back at the very silent heads of their friends. â⌠the weight of the contact embarrassment from our fellow partyâŚâ Vax chuckled. She heard stifled snorts and chortles from the table. âCurrently⌠Itâs hard to focus on.â
Keyleth looked down. Vax looked at Keyleth. She thought of Vax lying bloody on the palace floor. She sighed. âYou-â She pursed her lips. âYou⌠you said that when you were near death. We say a lot pf things when weâre near death. How do I know thatâs what you were truly feeling?â
Vaxâs brow knitted. His head pulled back slightly. ââŚI didnât say that out loudâŚâ he said. Keyleth raised her eyebrows. âI just thought it⌠I mean-â
"Oh, yeah, no, you said that out loud,â she said, half laughing. "No, that wasnât in your head!â Vaxâs mouth pulled to the side.
Vex and Percy were snickering quietly at the table.
Vax shook his head quickly. He looked up at her, and his expression was grim. âI wore a mask for a long time, where I grew up, andâŚâ He sighed. âIâm not going to do that anymore.
Keyleth saw Vexâs head practically straining backward.
Vax looked at Keyleth. "Iâll wait.â
Her eyes darted around the square. âWait?â she asked. Vax stared steadily at her. âWait?â
   "For you.â
She looked back at the party. Percyâs face was turned half toward them. He was biting back a grin. "UmâŚâ She looked down at the ground and blinked rapidly. âOkay?â She looked back up at Vax. âI donât know what else to say right now.â She wrinkled her brow apologetically. âIâm really tired.â She laughed lightly. âReally tired.â He smiled. She took a slow breath. âI think thereâs also a part of me thatâŚâ She chewed her lip. ââŚis just afraid.â
Vax smiled tightly at the ground. âI feel like Iâm gonna get pantsed by a goliath at any moment.â Grog choked on his ale. Keyleth laughed. Vax looked up at her. âDonât do anything,â he said. âDonât change anything.â He looked intently into her eyes. âI havenât lied,â he said. âIâve told the truth. If youâll have me, Iâm yours, if you donât want me, I understandâŚâ He shook his head and shrugged. âAnd thatâs all there is to say.â
   He walked away quickly.
Keyleth leaned her head against the Sun Tree and watched him go.
Percy looked back at her and flicked his eyebrows up sympathetically. She sighed and rejoined the feast, avoiding the curious glances cast in her direction as best she could.

Episode: 45, Those Who Walk AwayâŚ
Summary:Â Vax seeks out Keyleth after the events in the tomb.
Keyleth pulled the small wooden comb through her hair, creating small gusts of wind to dry it after washing out the dayâs dirt and gore.  She heard a soft knock at the door and set the comb down.
She crossed the room, took a breath, and opened the door.
Vax stood in the hallway with deep creases in his brow.
Keyleth looked at him for a long moment. âHey,â she said.
He looked into her eyes. He looked⌠lost. Like he was looking for something and didnât know what but was convinced she had the answer.
She looked over his face. His features were all the same, but it seemed like he was hardly recognizable. âHi,â she tried again. He just blinked at her. Her eyes tightened. âAre you okay?â
Vax shook his head and looked at the floor. His mouth opened long before he spoke. âI donât know,â he said quietly.
Keyleth moved half behind the door. She laid her fingers gently on Vaxâs and tugged him lightly inside. âCome in,â she said. She closed the door softly behind him. Vax stood in the center of the room staring at the night sky through the small window near the bed. She put her hand lightly on his back. âSit down.â
He sat on the very edge of the large blue bed and looked up at her.
Keyleth sat in the small white chair by the window and crossed one ankle tightly over the other. She looked softly at Vax. âHow do you feel?â
His eyes shone and he shook his head. âI donât know,â he said. He put his hands on the bedspread and took a long breath.
Keyleth watched him wrestle with his thoughts. She couldnât pinpoint what was wrong with him, aside from fear and a deep, unrelenting sadness. She wasnât even sure those were new. Maybe they had been there the entire time sheâd known him. Maybe they had been there his entire life. Vax was one of the best liars she knew. If he wanted to hide something, it was hidden. Maybe this had always been him. Had it?
Did she know him at all?
Vax took another breath and looked up at her. âAll I know is that I feltâŚÂ her.â His eyes unfocused, and it wasnât clear if he was talking to Keyleth, or himself, or⌠something else. âI donât know magic, I donât know anything,â he said, almost angrily. âI open doors, and only when the wind is blowing in the right direction sometimes, I think⌠I donât know what happened⌠but I felt her.â
Keyleth dragged her teeth over her lower lip. âDo you still feel her?â she asked. Her chest was tight and every breath she took seemed to catch in her nose, then her throat, then her lungs, before finally being expelled.
Vax looked at his hand on the bed. The creases in his forehead deepened. âYeah,â he said.
   Keyleth inhaled sharply.
Vax turned his face back toward her, but he seemed to be looking at nothing. âI donât know if I did anything in there, and I wouldnât take it back if I did, but I donât know what Iâm doing.â He covered his face with  his hands, and Keyleth saw the cracked and tarnished symbol of Sarenrae sewn onto the back of his glove.
She closed her eyes briefly and drew a breath.. âI donât know if it was very noble or very stupid, to be honest,â she said.He lowered his hands and half laughed. âProbably a little bit of both?â Keylethâs eyes felt wet. The Vax sitting on the bed reminded her little of the Vax who had jumped up after being knocked unconscious and kissed her. He just looked broken. âI can attempt a Restoration- a Greater Restoration spell, and see if I can sense anything.â
He looked into her eyes again like he was searching for something. âI- I donât know anything about any of that,â he said. He looked at his hand again, then back at her. âIâll let you.â
She crossed the room slowly and sat next to him on the bed. She closed her eyes and tried to draw an even breath. âJust lay back,â she whispered.
She focused on the stone beneath  her feet, casting her mind through it to the earth below, just barely recovering from the blight that had forced it asleep for nearly five years. She pulled the pulsing, healing energy up into her body and let it course through her fingertips to Vaxâs shoulder. The warm green energy spread through his body, searching for any source of corruption to destroy. The spell finishedâŚ
They sat in silence for a moment. Vax lay across the foot of the bed, and Keyleth sat beside him, hoping to feel any change.
   CAW!
   They both started.
A raven sat on the windowsill. It looked at the chair. Keyleth. Vax. The ceiling. Then flew away, a black speck in the black night.
   Vax sat up slowly.
Keyleth shook her head. âI⌠think  this goes⌠beyond any natural realm that I have any bearing over.â She sighed heavily.
She and Vax looked at each other, and she reached across and hugged him. She fought to keep tears from falling down her face. âI thought I was gonna lose you,â she choked. She pressed her face into Vaxâs neck. âAnd Iâm terrified that Iâm still going to.â
She felt a drop of water drip onto her neck and run down her back. Vax held her tightly. She felt his fingers press into her shoulders. She felt his breath on her neck.
"I think⌠I love you,â he said. His voice was barely audible, even as close as they were.
Keyleth pulled back and looked at him. He was waiting, still searching her eyes for whatever he was looking for. She remembered her visions. Vax charging into battle shouting her name, herself leading a tribe of young Ashari, young and strong for hundreds of years until the day she died.
She swallowed her tears and looked down at the bed. âAnd I think I love you,â she said. âI just donât know if I can allow myself to.â She met his gaze again. His eyes were shimmering wetly. âIâm terrified to allow myself to.â
He looked at the wall behind him. When he looked back at her, his eyes were dry.â
"You do realize that, if by some⌠crazy chance, and we all somehow⌠make it through this⌠domination alive with the Chroma Conclave, and I complete my AramenteâŚâ She took a breath. ââŚIâll still watch all of you die.â Vax looked down. âEverything could go phenomenally well⌠and⌠by becoming headmaster⌠we enter a- a bit of a realm of mortality where I could live for a very very long time.â He looked back up at her. He wasnât searching anymore. Whatever heâd been looking for, heâd found.
   Or hadnât.
He bit his lip. Keyleth forced herself to go on.
"Iâm afraid⌠every time I look at one of your faces, that itâs gonna be the last.â His face filled her vision. His hard, sad eyes. The dark hair spilling from beneath his hood. His lips, fighting a light tremble. His knees shifted away fro hers. "And I feel that deep down, I know that day is coming.â Her lips remained parted as she searched for words. Her eyes stared vacantly over his shoulder. âSo because of that Iâm afraid to let myself feel anything⌠deeper than I already do.â
Vax stared at her, his features softening against his will.
   Then he left.
She didnât even have time to stop him.
She didnât know if she would have tried.
She crumpled inward and sobbed. Her heart ached for everything she knew she had to miss. She had to. It wasnât fair. Whether it was Vax or Kash or Percy or whoever else, it wasnât fair. She couldnât let herself feel that strongly. She couldnât.
