Ooooookie dokie. Holy geez this campaign got kinda delayed and this recap is actually a week late beyond that. My bad. There was a Halloween one-shot in between and that recap’ll be coming shortly too. MOVING ON
- Sea elf kiddo is missing and it’s just insult to injury as far as the sea elves are concerned at this point. They’re pretty much holding the entire island hostage for his return. So uhhhh, get on that guys. Chop chop. It’s dawn now and you’ve got until sunset.
- Where to go, where to go... Most of this place is super rocky, and there was no sign of a kiddo in the smugglers encampment, but there was that last stream that went from the pond into the hillside. Y’know, where Sayer cartwheeled through some assassin vines? There. But less cartwheels this time, maybe.
- To the stream! Yup, there’s an opening where it goes back into the hillside. Looks like a cave with enough to pretty much walk right in behind this boulder.
- Ooh lookie, some hair and rusty looking stuff on the stone by the crack the stream’s coming from. Time for Sayer to lick the obviously-blood just to be sure.
- Yeah, it’s blood. Aaaaaand you’re gross. You kiss Baelor with that mouth?
- Main tunnel ahead or small lefty tunnel that goes downish? Lefty tunnel it is. Round mosaic room at the bottom, the tiles depict waves, and arms cupping a conch shell. A fine grate at the center for the trickle of stream to go through to god know’s where. Idk why but the PC’s are convinced this is a hella special room to come back to.
- Nah, it’s just pretty.
- Back to the main tunnel following two small suspiciously kid-heel-sized drag marks in the dirt, moving silently, found a little chimney in the stone above them a ways down. Cue the two-dork circus act of Sayer climbing onto Baelor’s shoulders to check it out. And then realizing that there are claw marks all up and down it.
- Feet back on the ground, time to mov- OH MY GOD THERE’S SOMETHING COMING DOWN AT US
- And then the brave and daring adventurers ran back out of the cave because apparently that’s how D&D works in our household.
- In their defense there was a mated pair of cave crawlers (40lb cave dwelling raccoon/demon/monkey homebrew monsters) chasing them out. Creepy, furry asses properly kicked the PC’s head back into the cave because angry elves will drown them if they don’t.
- Ah yes, the plant debris and scrap leather that fell down from the chimney? Let’s look at it briefly, and then do no further investigation into where leather came from and what else there might be. This is absolutely not a cue to look for a nest or stash further up there.
- I’m lying, it totally is. Oh well, goodies for the PC’s later I guess.
- Small chasm with a branch of stream falling down it. Hop on over, anchor a rope to get down a more treacherous slope (and back up safely later).
- The tunnel doubles back down on itself and the PC’s pass under the waterfall from the small chasm above and into a large open cavern with a near perfectly round pool, a small pedestal, and water flowing down the far side. And an especially shadowy alcove.
- If this were a video game there would have been a suspicious autosave here.
- Mid-boss wheeeeee! With the ever-charming sound of bone cracking and an ominous squelch a multitude of unnaturally long dead white arms with claw-like grasping hands emerge and begin reaching blindly for the PC’s.
- So we throw rocks at them? Okie dokie guys. Whatever you say.
- PC’s finish experimental rock-throwing and Indiana Jones their way to the pool and pillar on the far side. Did I mention the arms move? Because they do. Not much, but just enough to change where the gaps of safety beyond their reach are.
- Reach the far side, tacky but VERY FANCY hat and trident in the alcove, Captain GhostFace McDickButt must have left it.
- Aaaand found the kiddo, he looks about five years old. Poor boy’s body is laying against the pillar with his skull caved in by a gilded and now blood-caked ceremonial looking conch shell.
- Brief table sideline as we debate pronunciation. Con-k vs. versus con-ch. Con-ch wins. (I think)
- Baelor is a considerate sweetie and rinses the shell off in the pool, which turns out to be a blue hole, and replaces it on the pedestal where it probably belongs. He’s probably going to cry into his pillow about this poor kid later, he’d cover him up if there weren’t horrifying disembodied arms trying to grab him and Baelor and drag them into the blue hole.
- But there are so Sayer and Baelor square up to the arms nearest to each of them, and actually take out a couple. After the third one falls the arms stop grasping at them and combine into two HELLA SUPER MEGA ARMS. The arms slap and grasp at the PC’s, knocking loose stalactites from the ceiling with each missed blow.
- PC’s wear down and take out the arms. Yaaaaaaaaaay good job not dying!
- Baelor wraps up the body of the poor kid in his bedroll to carry it safely back to the arms of his people who are waiting in the bay. Good thing he anchored that rope for the steep slope back up, it’s a little tougher with his extra burden.
- PC’s thankfully stop below the chimney so Sayer can circus-act his was up to the nest and retrieve the goodies. After falling down, getting caught by his BF, and trying again. Like the throwing knives that would have been super useful with the near-stationary arms back in that cavern. And a reliquary that’s the tie in for an experimental extra party member for later on. Also weird, unidentifiable old coins. Wonder which campaign teaser those connect to?
- Poor kiddo gets returned to his people who are mournful, but grateful for the respectful return of his remains. PC’s get one last parting goodie from the elves before sailing away to the north with their dwarfy buddies.

There are stories and legends from old timers of how once upon a time there used to be beautiful merfolk in the inner ocean. Kind and wise and beautiful and reclusive, found only in just the right weather in just the right places during just the right phase of the moon. The last few generations these sighting have stopped, and the inland ocean has become an inexplicably dangerous place to fish or sail. Ships go missing and wash up later torn to pieces, or never seen at all. Shipping has become ridiculously expensive because of the danger and longer routes that have to be taken to stay in the safety of the shallows. Even piracy has slowed to nearly nothing. Port towns that used to be busy and prosperous hubs of commerce have dwindled and fallen to shambles and disrepair with all the but the most hearty, stubborn, or poor having gradually left. It’s become common see homes repaired with salvaged materials from boats, or wagons/carts made from boats.
The previously turquoise waters are beginning to grow dark, no matter how bright the sun shines down.
UNNATURAL INSPIRATION CAMPAIGN
Walnut Grove has become a ghost town. Once just another town on the road, populated by farmers and a small but reputable craftsman’s guild, the town has suddenly been found empty. Buyers seeking to make purchases from the guild find no welcome at the guild hall or warehouse, and not a soul in sight. The windows and doors are all dark, and none have had the nerve to do anything beyond peer through the windows or knock cautiously on the doors. No exodus of people has been seen on the road, either.
Silence has fallen over the town, and there is no one left to even try to explain it.
