There’s this pity you feel for August, you have to admit. When Seven is mentioned, it’s minor, but you see them prickle. When they laugh with you, talk to you, joke with you, sometimes you see them do something akin to remembering before they shut themself away again.

This is what it is: Seven Lawless ripped himself away from you. You don’t know what this thing is yet between you and August, but you do know that you don’t want to lose it. You will not let Seven Lawless get in the way—of the competition, of your happiness, of your relationship with August and the others, of your life.

Finally, you manage, “I need closure. Before you say it, I know. I’m being selfish.”

Seven finally sits on the bed, but not without a bewildered look on his face. He was never very good at concealing his emotions well. “But?”

“No buts,” you clarify. “I’m being selfish. I’m coming to you and begging that you’ll have mercy on me and humor me and… just talk to me, Seven.”

He opens his mouth for a moment, only for him to close it once more. His lips purse, he bites his cheek, presses his eyes shut and turns his head away.

“Please.”

The way it comes out is like a beg, which is equal parts humiliating and what you feel is probably fate at work. It doesn’t matter. You’re desperate. You failed to fight for Seven once, and look how that turned out? You can’t do it again. If you keep repeating mistakes, could you stand there at the end of your life and proudly say you gave it your all?

“Why do you do that?” you ask them.

Their eyes open, taking themself out of the music. “Do what?”

“You always do this thing,” you tell them, “where you knock your foot or your leg into mine. Kinda like how you sometimes kick Rowan underneath the table.”

That makes them snort, and their rich laughter pulls a chuckle from you as well. When they laugh, they have this beautiful way of letting their head hang just barely and some stray curls gently frame the angles of their face.

Their eyebrows draw together, and only then is it that you realize that not only were you staring, you’ve also leaned in.

August pulls in slightly, only to pull back. Your earbud tugs out of your ear, and August plucks theirs out. “You caught me,” they say, their voice nonchalant as ever. “Clare always said that she thinks physical touch is my love language.”
