This is 100% @criminalminds-and-cookies fault for sending me a very cute video of a husband post-surgery flirting with his wife:
There are always risks with any surgery. Even one done as often as a simple appendectomy and knowing her husband, Emily is a little worried they might run into those very issues. When those said complications arise, she faces them how sheβs faced everything in her relationship with a man like Aaron Hotchnerβ bravely. How many times has she walked the halls of a hospital waiting for him? How many more times will she wait in a room like this? So, when they tell her they had to abandon their original plan for a more invasive one, their fears about scar tissue coming true, she gives her consent.Β
And she settles back down and waits.Β
But he always comes back. That much has always been true.
This time is no exception.
βHello, my love.β She pushes his hair back from his face, smiling at the sleepy little grin he manages when he sees her. βHow do you feel?β
He grunts a little, dazed, and mind heavily clouded by the sedative still working through him. βCold,β he rasps, moving his head and rubbing absently at his cherry red nose. Heβll only aggravate his nose more the longer they keep him on the oxygen and morphine.Β
She reaches over and gently pins his hand down. Heβs still too sedated to remember how to really coordinate movement with his right hand. So as long as she can keep the left busy he wonβt further move the canal under his nose. Otherwise, sheβll spend the next few hours straightening it out.Β
βYouβre married?β He asks in amazement, scowling down at their joined left hands. More importantly at the rock sitting on her ring finger.
She grins because she canβt help it. The immediate shift between her soft Aaron and the hardened, still confused, scowl of Hotch a little too humorous in the moment. βIβm married to you, doofus.β She slides her fingers between his, watching his confusion only grow, as she lifts their joined hands to show him the tan line on his own ring finger.Β
βTo me?β he asks, a slight increase in pitch in his bewildered voice. βWhy?β
Her smile softens, if not a little sad. His confusion is warranted. Theyβve done this dance so many times she expects some form of hesitation and bewilderment but the anger that arches his brows is disheartening. As if heβs considered sheβs just pulling his leg. Making fun of him and the crush heβs had for ages.Β
Sweeping his bangs from his forehead, mind wandering for a moment as she makes an effort to remember to get him an appointment to get his haircut. Otherwise, sheβll be hearing how the length is bothering him for the next week and a half. He can take calls all day from freaked out police officials but ask the man to call a barber and heβs cowering away.
βHow about you worry about eating that cracker?β She points to the cracker in his right hand. The cracker heβs got to finish before they let him go anywhere. The cracker she knows is going to take him ages.Β
He scowls at it, obviously having forgotten its existence. Lines of concentration wrinkle his forehead as he leans forward off the bed, hardly lifting his right hand. βOw,β he groans, laying back down. He looks up at her a betrayed look written across his face. As if sheβs the one thatβs pulled at his fresh stitches by trying to sit up. βThat hurt.β
She shakes her head and reaches over him to take the cracker from his right to put it in his left. βMove your hand not your body,β she explains patiently. She puts her hand under his wrist, aiding the slow, uncoordinated movement as he takes a small bite from the corner. βThere you go.β
He chews it slowly, grimacing.Β
βYou want some water,β she offers. That saltine is only going to dry his mouth and she knows his throat is hurting.
He shakes his head, chewing thoughtfully on another small bite. β βm tired,β he whispers, rubbing at his eyes with the palm of his hand. βNeed coffee.β
She shakes her head, βno coffee.β Only her husband would ask for coffee not even an hour after surgery. Heβs an addict. βYou just had surgery, Aaron. Itβs gonna be water or Gatorade for a while.β She moves the oxygen canal back under his nose from where heβs moved it with his rubbing.Β
He grunts, trying to turn away while she fixes the canal. βItβs itching me,β he grumbles, frowning at her, βand I βonβt like Gatorade. Itβs nasty.β
She rolls her eyes. βJust eat your cracker.β
He frowns at the cracker in his hand, nearly half-gone (mercifully). βNot my boss,β he mumbles, chewing on its edge.Β
She brushes the crumbles off his chest. βOh, Iβm afraid I am,β she says. βIβm your proxy and your wife. Thatβs as much as your boss as anybody comes.βΒ
He looks at her with that bewildered look from earlier. βMy WIFE?β He just stares at her with his mouth open, βhuh-uh. Youβre lyingβ¦ jusβ being mean. Thatβs not true.β
She pushes his cracker to his mouth, waiting for him to take another bite. βIβm not lying,β she reassures him. βWeβre married. Happily for about nine years.β She runs a hand down through his hair. βWell, when youβre not being a pain in my ass.β
He smirks at that, a dopey little thing that makes her smile even if she shakes her head.Β
βEat your cracker,β she says with a roll of her eyes, smiling too. Heβs so ridiculous.Β
He takes a bite of his cracker and frowns at it, βI donβt like crackers very much.β He shows her the cracker, βlook, itβs almost gone!β
She canβt help but smile, βI see that. Now, finish it off and Iβll go get your go-bag and weβll see about letting you put some pants on.β
That makes him raise his eyebrows. He glances around the room, a soft blush forcing his pale cheeks pink. βIβm not wearing pants,β he asks softly, a slightly panicked edge to his tone.
She shakes her head, βor underwear.β That causes a whole blush, his entire face a very light pink. She laughs, almost feeling bad for getting him so worked up. βWeβll get you some pants once you finish that cracker,β she barters. βSome socks as well.βΒ
He frowns at her, all sad and mushy with those big brown eyes. βItβs hard,β he complains, βand nasty.β
She nods, βI know but youβre not getting any pants until you finish it.β
He nods solemnly, taking a sad little bite. βAre you gonna help me put them on?β Itβs a completely innocent question, absent of all his usual mischief. βI donβt want you to see me naked,β he explains patiently, finishing his cracker with a happy little smile.
She nods, βweβre married, remember? Iβve seen everything you have to offer plenty of times.β She shakes her head when he blushes a little. βYouβve seen me naked too so weβre even.β
βReally?β He smiles, βI bet youβre really pretty. No, I know youβre very pretty.βΒ
βI mean it,β he says, voice getting a little too loud when he thinks she doesnβt believe him. βSo, pretty. Itβs crazy.β
Itβs just so sweet and one of those moments where itβs so easy to remember why she fell in love with him. She leans down and kisses him, cupping his cheek. When she pulls back his eyes are wide. βYouβre adorable.β
βWoah,β he chuckles. βDo we always kiss like that?βΒ
She nods, βwell, yeah.β
He raises his eyebrows in amazement. βJeez,β he swallows, his adamβs apple bobbing. βCan we do it again?β
She chuckles but leans back down and gives him a quick peck.Β
βI like being married to you,β he informs her.Β
βWell,β she says, βI like being married to you too.β
