Groundbreaking inventions and earth-shaking technologies make headlines and millions in profit. But innovation rarely arrives in a limousine. It shows up as a question or a pet peeve. A hunch that the default setting could be better. An inability to accept the status quo. 

Innovation is risky and rebellious. It means breaking the routine and reimagining the familiar.  It treats uncertainty as an invitation instead of a barrier. Innovation doesn’t take a genius, it just requires curiosity and willingness to try. And try again. 

The world needs more tinkerers, experimenters, and fixers. People who believe change is possible and start with whatever they have. Then don’t stop until they’ve made something new or better. 

Creativity asks, “what if?” Innovation replies, “here’s how.”

Los inventos revolucionarios y las tecnologías increíbles salen en los titulares y generan millones en ganancias. Pero la innovación casi nunca por si sola. Aparece como una pregunta o una molestia constante. Una corazonada de que la configuración “por defecto” podría ser mejor. Una incapacidad de aceptar las cosas tal y como están.

La innovación es arriesgada y rebelde. Significa romper la rutina y volver a imaginar lo que ya conocemos. Toma la incertidumbre como una invitación en vez de un obstáculo. No hace falta ser un genio para innovar; solo se necesita curiosidad y ganas de intentar. Y de volver a intentar.

El mundo necesita más gente curiosa, experimentadora y solucionadora. Gente que crea que el cambio es posible y que empiece con lo que tenga al alcance. Que no se detenga hasta crear algo nuevo o mejor.

When we were kids, it happened fast. We outgrew clothes and shoes seemingly overnight. We constantly reached for things just out of our grasp. We made messes and art without worrying about what anyone would think. 

As we shift into adulthood, growth gets harder to come by. Get good grades and a great job. Burn the midnight oil. Struggle against the odds. Then somewhere along the way, we get comfortable with the status quo. Sitting on the couch, watching and scrolling instead of trying and doing. 

But creativity demands growth. Not the kind that can be measured with a ruler. It’s about taking stock of your character. Who’s ready to chase wild possibilities and meaningful progress? We must unlearn the need to be perfect and busy. Remember how to play and get our hands dirty again. 

It takes curiosity and courage. Because growth doesn’t always feel good. It forces us to shed our old skin, to stumble, and start again. Sometimes, growth happens quietly, in between uncertainty and doubt, the moments when nothing seems to be changing. Until everything does.

Cuando éramos niños, todo pasó muy rápido. De la noche a la mañana, ya no nos quedaba la ropa y ni los zapatos. Constantemente intentábamos alcanzar cosas que estaban fuera de nuestro alcance. Hacíamos desorden y arte sin preocuparnos por lo que pensaran los demás.

A medida que nos hacemos adultos, el crecimiento se vuelve más difícil de alcanzar. Obtener buenas calificaciones y un buen trabajo. Quemarnos las pestañas estudiando hasta tarde. Luchar contra viento y marea. Entonces, en algún momento del camino, nos acomodamos en el statu quo. Nos sentamos en el sofá, viendo y desplazándonos por la pantalla en lugar de intentar y hacer.

Pero la creatividad exige crecimiento. No del tipo que se puede medir con una regla. The world feels hard in so many ways. Couldn’t we all use more softness? 

Soft is gentle, empathic, and vulnerable. But being soft is not a weakness. It is a sign of deeper strength. Having the courage to walk through life without armor. A willingness to listen before speaking. Welcoming whatever comes with open palms. Pulling someone close for a hug. 

What if our work was softer? What would we make with a little tenderness? Art that truly resonates. Innovations that heal instead of harm. Communities that hold one another instead of tearing other people down. 

Soft can be a quiet form of resistance. Practice subtlety, trust, and intimacy in a world that celebrates loud braggadocio, knee-jerk reactions, and blunt force. 

Let’s snuggle up and let down our guard. Soft can be our salvation.

Nuestro tema de octubre es SUAVE.

It was chosen by our Pereira chapter in Colombia, illustrated by Edwin Morales, and is presented by Adobe.  

Every blossom is an act of becoming. The quiet force of roots pushing through the dark, the slow unfurling of a bud, a sudden burst of color. But plants don’t blossom on command. Each flower requires the right amount of sunlight, water, and nourishment across the cycle of the seasons. 

It’s the same for creativity. Our next idea lies dormant, while we fertilize our mind. With attention, protection, and space to play, our work becomes what it is meant to be. Petal by petal, the passion inside us bursts into a glorious bouquet.

But remember that flowers don’t bloom purely for their own sake. They share their fragrance, attract pollinators, and serve the larger ecosystem. Your creativity needs to pollinate as well. So, share your gift. Spread more ideas, more beauty, and more courage. 

To truly blossom, you must take the risk of opening up. This is your season. You deserve to be seen. Offer your abundance of color to the world!

Who or what inspires you?  My son, our staff, and 82 year old woman who’s been living at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar for the last 12 years

Favorite coffee shop in San Diego?  There’s a coffee cart downtown by our offices called, Mud Bar - one of the oldest coffee carts in the city and is run by a dad and daughter. We call the coffee rocket fuel, it’s the best I’ve had.

Algunas personas sienten la necesidad de moverse de un lugar a otro, de vivir fuera de los límites y restricciones de una dirección permanente. Otras, no tienen otra opción más que dejar su hogar porque buscan una vida mejor. Quien vive como nómada acepta la incomodidad, se abre a lo desconocido y convierte cada desvío en una nueva aventura.

Muchos hemos soñado con ser nómadas digitales y trabajar desde lugares exóticos. Cruzar fronteras y zonas horarias para encontrar inspiración fresca y vistas que vale la pena compartir. Pero no hace falta llenar el pasaporte de sellos para seguir ese espíritu nómada.

Crear también es un viaje. Explora tus ideas. Prueba distintas formas de llevarlas a cabo. Lo más importante es dar ese primer paso. No importa a dónde llegues, porque la magia está en aparecer, de pronto, en un lugar que no esperabas.

Our theme for July is MENTOR. It was chosen by our Glasgow chapter in Scotland, illustrated by Molly Hankinson, and is presented by Adobe.  

No one is born with all the knowledge and skills they’ll need to thrive in life. That’s why kids go to school. But we shouldn’t stop learning once we graduate. We need to find new teachers. 

A mentor doesn’t have to be an expert or the top of their field. Just someone who’s been there and done that before. Someone to show you the way and offer a bit of advice and encouragement. Ideally, they’re willing to make introductions and mention your name when you’re not in the room. 

Being a mentor is considered a way of giving back. But mentors get just as much out of the relationship, if not more. Beyond the satisfaction of helping, mentors also learn from their mentees. From a fresh way of looking at established practices to tackling new problems with a beginner’s mind. 

So, ask for help. We all could use a guide as we climb. Find your mentors and be a mentor in return. Your plans for growth are more likely to succeed if they include lifting others up as you rise.

Ser mentor se considera una forma de retribuir. Pero, en realidad, los mentores también

ganan mucho con esa relación, si no más. Además de la satisfacción de ayudar, los

mentores también aprenden de aquellos a quienes guían. Desde una nueva manera de

considerar prácticas ya establecidas hasta a abordar nuevos problemas con

mentalidad de principiante.

Así que, pide ayuda. A todos nos viene bien que nos den una mano. Busca a tus

mentores y conviértete en mentor de alguien más. Es más probable que tus planes de

“Everything old is new again” sums up the revivals that bubble up throughout culture. Clothing styles, art movements, and all kinds of things come back into fashion decades after their original popularity waned. It’s a useful paradigm. Take something old, dust it off, and adapt it to suit the present moment. 

But are there really no original ideas left? Has everything been done? Does it matter? New context adds new meaning. You can recycle whatever you want, just make it your own. Lots of things from the past are worth saving from obscurity. 

What we need is a few more revivals. 

A revival of empathy and understanding. 

Kindness and caring.

A revival of handwritten notes and holding open doors for strangers. 

Let’s pursue hobbies and join clubs instead of optimizing and monetizing every hour. 

Bring back boredom and curiosity. 

It’s time for a revival of the golden rule. 

It’s up to you to distill the best of the past and create a better future.

“Todo lo viejo vuelve a ser nuevo” resume los resurgimientos que emergen a lo largo de la cultura. Los estilos de ropa, los movimientos artísticos y todo tipo de cosas vuelven a estar de moda décadas después de que su popularidad original disminuyera. Es un paradigma útil. Toma algo viejo, quítale el polvo y adáptalo al momento presente. Pero, ¿realmente ya no quedan ideas originales? ¿Ya todo se ha hecho? ¿Tiene importancia? Un nuevo contexto añade un nuevo significado. Puedes reciclar lo que quieras, solo ponle tu toque. Hay muchas cosas del pasado que vale la pena salvar del olvido. We all reach turning points in life that change the course of our destiny. Should you break up or give your relationship another chance? Accept that job offer or strike out on your own? 

What’s the best way to go? Continue straight ahead? Or turn left? When you’re faced with a crucial decision, there’s no map that shows where the consequences lead. And sometimes, you only recognize a crossroads when you see it in the rearview mirror. 

No wonder that in folklore and mythology, crossroads represent a gateway between our mortal coil and the supernatural realm. An in-between place of transition, where worlds collide, and anything can happen next. 

Legend has it that the greatest blues guitarist in the world, Robert Johnson, met the devil at the crossroads of two dirt roads at midnight and struck a bargain to trade his everlasting soul for masterful skill. But there was no deal with the devil. In reality, he practiced like hell.

So, how do you decide which way to go next? Just pick what feels right. Because there’s no wrong choice. Only different journeys to where you’re meant to be.

Todos llegamos a puntos de inflexión en la vida que cambian el curso de nuestro destino. ¿Deberías romper con tu relación o darle otra oportunidad? ¿Aceptar esa oferta de trabajo o emprender tu propio negocio?

Like train tracks receding into the distance, our lives eventually reach the end of the line. And for a large part of our journey, most people tend to live parallel lives. We go to school, hang out with friends, get jobs, and take care of our families.

Just look out the window at the home or office across the street. We exist side by side with strangers. Always keeping the same distance of anonymity between us – even though we have so much in common. All of us are trying to build a better life for ourselves and our loved ones.

Of course, we are not carbon copies. The differences make our lives our own. Her black coffee. His energy drink. Their chamomile tea. So, we may never see eye to eye. After all, mathematics proves that parallel lines never meet.

But unlike those train tracks, our paths don’t run in straight lines. We can meet someone new at every turn. Look someone in the eye and smile. Reach across that gap between us and make a connection.

We may be living parallel lives. But we don’t have to go through them alone.

Al igual que las vías del tren que se alejan en la distancia, nuestras vidas eventualmente llegan al final del camino. Y durante gran parte de nuestro viaje, la mayoría de las personas tienden a vivir vidas paralelas. Vamos a la escuela, salimos con amigos, conseguimos empleos y cuidamos de nuestras familias.

Simplemente mira por la ventana hacia la casa u oficina del otro lado de la calle. Existimos codo a codo con extraños. Manteniendo siempre la misma distancia de anonimato entre nosotros, aunque tengamos tanto en común. Todos intentando construir una vida mejor para uno mismo y para nuestros seres queridos.

Simplicity provides clarity, but layers give our work a richer complexity and depth. 

Musicians fuse melodies, harmonies, and rhythms to create more dynamic compositions. While other artists use a juxtaposition of colors, textures, images or materials for greater visual impact. The creative magic happens when those choices conjure different interpretations and emotions. 

Because people have layers too. Just like a collage is created by overlapping layers of found materials, we pile up experiences that form our beliefs and reactions. 

The cliché “beauty is only skin deep” means that a pleasant appearance does not guarantee a virtuous character. We are a mess of competing emotions and personality traits. So how we act to the outside world doesn’t always reflect how we feel inside. We make polite chit chat when it takes vulnerable conversations to form meaningful connections. 

Surface level pleasantries and superficial decoration have their place. But it is the layers that give life meaning. We must peel them away to discover our deeper truths.

La sencillez aporta claridad, pero las capas dan a nuestro trabajo una mayor complejidad y profundidad. 

Los músicos fusionan melodías, armonías y ritmos para crear composiciones más dinámicas. Otros artistas utilizan una yuxtaposición de colores, texturas, imágenes o materiales para lograr un mayor impacto visual. La magia creativa sucede cuando esas decisiones conjuran diferentes interpretaciones y emociones. 

Porque las personas también tenemos capas. Igual que un collage se crea superponiendo capas de materiales encontrados, amontonamos experiencias que forman nuestras creencias y reacciones. 

El tópico «la belleza es sólo superficial» significa que una apariencia agradable no garantiza un carácter virtuoso. Somos una mescolanza de emociones y rasgos de personalidad que compiten entre sí. Así que nuestra forma de actuar de cara al exterior no siempre refleja cómo nos sentimos por dentro. Hablamos de forma educada cuando lo que hace falta son conversaciones vulnerables para establecer vínculos significativos.

By putting ourselves in a new environment or experience, we gain a different perspective. That sense of discovery sparks fresh inspiration. If your brain feels stuck, try moving your feet. 

So, let’s travel somewhere we’ve never been. Either down the street or across a far-off border, there’s so many places to explore. Or we can take a metaphorical journey like unlocking personal growth in therapy, advancing on our career paths, or undergoing a spiritual awakening. Or we can enjoy a journey into imagination through a book, film, or other work of art.

As we travel through life, everyone you meet is at a different point in their own unique journey. Some of us know where we’re going. While other paths are full of twists, turns, and obstacles thrown in our way. The trick is to embrace the detours and delays. Because there are no shortcuts on a journey of self-discovery or creative expression. 

Just please remember: you are not traveling alone.

Vamos. Salgamos y veamos qué nos depara el mundo.

Al ponernos en un nuevo entorno o experiencia, obtenemos una perspectiva diferente. Esa sensación de descubrimiento genera nueva inspiración. Si sientes que tu cerebro está estancado, intenta mover los pies.

 Así que, viajemos a algún lugar donde nunca hayamos estado. Ya sea al final de la calle o al otro lado de una frontera lejana, hay muchos lugares para explorar. O podemos emprender un viaje metafórico, como desbloquear el crecimiento personal en terapia, avanzar en nuestro camino profesional o experimentar un despertar espiritual. Our Freiburg chapter had sustainability in mind when they chose this theme — from their swarms of cyclists commuting to work to their robust recycling programs that recover and reuse 69% of the city’s waste. 

Our world runs on cycles. There’s the frantic buzz of the 24-hour news cycle. The boom and bust of economic cycles. The changing seasons. Every plant, animal, and organism exists in a life cycle of birth, growth, reproduction, and death. Water flows through a cycle of evaporation into vapor to condensation in clouds to precipitation that falls as rain or snow. The menstrual cycle. The circadian rhythm of our sleep cycle. 

Just as crops are grown on a rotation cycle to replenish the soil, our own creativity requires a cycle of inspiration or inputs, followed by a burst of productivity or entering a flow state, and finally a period of rest or contemplation. 

Cycles are circular and keep things moving. Which cycles are you living in tune with? And which ones are you fighting vainly against?

Nuestro capítulo de Friburgo tenía la sustentabilidad en mente cuando eligió este tema, desde sus pelotones de ciclistas trasladándose al trabajo hasta sus sólidos programas de reciclaje que recuperan y reutilizan el 69% de los residuos de la ciudad.

Nuestro mundo funciona en ciclos. Teneos el zumbido frenético del ciclo de noticias de 24 horas. El auge y la caída de los ciclos económicos. Las estaciones cambiantes. Cada planta, animal y organismo existe en un ciclo de vida de nacimiento, crecimiento, reproducción y muerte. El agua fluye a través de un ciclo de evaporación, pasando a vapor, a condensación en las nubes y a precipitación en forma de lluvia o nieve. El ciclo menstrual. El ritmo circadiano de nuestro ciclo del sueño.

Así como los productos agrícolas se cultivan en un ciclo de rotación para reponer el suelo, nuestra propia creatividad requiere un ciclo de inspiración o aportes, seguido de un estallido de productividad o entrada en un estado de flujo y, finalmente, un período de descanso o contemplación.

What’s your current book or podcast obsession? I'm currently reading the book "Challenger" by Adam Higginbotham, which is a historical account of the space shuttle disaster, which reads like a thriller.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?  Do fewer things better.

What’s a secret talent of yours? Table tennis (a.k.a. "ping pong"). I take it very seriously.

What’s your go-to karaoke song? If I could sing, it would be "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor.

Have you ever pulled on a loose thread in a sweater or sock? Things can unravel quickly. 

The creative process can feel like that. A nagging thought, an imperfect bit, or a big tangled mess. But maybe that thread is trying to tell you something. Follow it and see where it takes you. 

Because thread is both a physical and metaphorical tool of creativity. In film and literature, a “thread” is the progression of a plot line or theme that helps tie the narrative together. While in sewing, weaving, embroidery, and knitting, the “thread” physically embellishes and holds the piece together. 

No wonder a loose thread is so hard to ignore. 

It turns out that all the good and bad in your life is forming a beautiful tapestry.

¿Alguna vez has tirado de un hilo suelto en un suéter o un calcetín? Las cosas pueden complicarse rápidamente 

y el proceso creativo puede ser así. Un pensamiento persistente, un fragmento imperfecto o un gran enredo. Pero tal vez ese hilo está tratando de decirte algo. Síguelo y verás adónde te lleva, 

porque el hilo es una herramienta de creatividad tanto física como metafórica. En el cine y la literatura, un “hilo conductor” es la progresión de una línea argumental o tema que ayuda a unir la narración, mientras que en la costura, el tejido, el bordado y el punto, el “hilo” embellece físicamente y mantiene unida la pieza.

No es de extrañar que un hilo suelto sea tan difícil de ignorar. 

How do you see the world? How do you want to change it?

Vision refers both to the sense of sight and our ability to imagine the future. Are you focused on the little details? Can you see the big picture?

As we age, our eyesight begins to deteriorate; seeing objects up close gets more difficult. And as we gain experience, what we want to accomplish evolves. Will your life grow darker or brighter?

Each creative act involves seeing something in your mind’s eye then attempting to make it a reality. A painter, an architect, and every other type of artist or craftsman has a vision for their work. What message, emotion, or impact do you want to convey in yours? 

You are your own visionary. What do you want to see?
