This thought often crossed his mind. Anyone who happened to hear it might think that Armand de Beaumont was a boy embittered by life. But rather, he had been taught this truth by its cruelest lesson.

Since the day a rival clan seized power in his native province of France, the De Beaumont family had suffered persecution.
