If you have been following us then you should know by now that if you don’t find us on the renowned hiking trails of the Cape, we are probably seated in a venue filled with amazing individuals and good food paired with great wine.
Let’s throw in a fun and perhaps for some, obvious fact before we proceed: Waterblommetjie is an edible flower.
So, on Friday the 20th, we went on a hop-on-hop-off tasting of gourmet treats that’ll be on offer at the four wine farms which will be partaking in the Waterblommetjie Festival that’s set to take place on Saturday 1 September 2018. The festival seeks to celebrate one of South Africa’s uniquely local dishes. All the wine farms are located in the heart of Paarl, cuddled by fine-looking rock mountains.
Our first stop was Toeka Stoor of @Domain Brahms, can we just say the restaurant is a beaut and whoever came with the concept deserves all the wines in the world. The place is adorned with old goeters and vintage cars and tractors. Check out the pictures and tell us if you’re blown away or nah! We had rooisterkoek served with jam and chips made of waterblommetjie and gin. The treat was not bad at all and we enjoyed it.
Next was @Windemeul, this cellar was established in 1944 and produces a range of exceptional wines enjoyed locally and overseas. We tasted their Waterblommetjie potjie and Sauvignon Blanc 2018, the two went great together. It absolutely was a delectable meal. On the day of the festival there’s going to be potjiekos competition, wine tasting, live music and so much more. Windmeul will be hosting their customary potjiekos competition, which will also feature their cellar master’s original waterblommetjies recipe. Outdoor enthusiasts can enter the Run the Vines trail run before tucking into some delicious waterblommetjies. Entries can be done online at http://www.runthevines.co.za. The festival co-incides with the monthly Windmeul farmers’ market, where visitors can stock up on fresh local produce such as locally grown waterblommetjies
Then we headed to @Boland, the cellar is one of the country’s largest producers and their wine excellence is off the charts. Here we were served with the tasty Waterblommetjie soup and muscadel and their wine (One formation: Pinotage Shiraz Grenache). Expect samosas and stew, live band, beers for the guys because as much as we hate to admit it, wine wasn’t made for everybody and that’s a shame.

Lastly, we took a short left @Rhebokskloof believe it or not but this estate has been operating since the 1600’s, that’s a very long time. We guess it’s safe to say that they know what they’re doing. Their waterblommetjie ice-cream was toothsome and their wine is of top quality.

Free entry to all four venues can be secured with the donation of one tin of canned food per vehicle. The food will go the official festival charity The Haven Night Shelter in Paarl. Collect a stamp from all four participants in the festival passport to qualify for amazing prizes such as gift vouchers and product hampers.
