re: boiled uncles it always makes me think about how the USA has extremely minimal public ritual events and we are a worse civilization for it. you look at the festival schedule of the roman empire and it was like they barely had any days where there wasnt a parade or a burnt offering or some old men hobbled into the fields to sprinkle the first squirt from a mute virgin or some shit like it never ended. i think lack of pointless public rituals is a huge failing in a civilization and Japan is way ahead of us on this one

sometimes you don't even want someone to watch the movie you keep referencing. referencing it or even just placidly recounting the plot to an intrigued other is just a way to shake the horror of watching it off. sort of like how half of my class in school became temporarily obsessed with this one movie we had been taken to see on a trip, which was about this girl having a pet fox. and at the end of the film it leaps out of a second story window to its death. I forget what the film was even called. But basically the school forced us to watch it, it was mandatory as I recall, and for the rest of the year we were all muttering shit like "yeah, and then the fox jumps out the window" pessimistically when someone talked something up to us as if it was about to be great fun. And when people would be like wtf are you guys talking about. we'd have to grumble an approximate explanation that suggested it wasn't an inside joke to us but in fact something nobody who attended the viewing of could leave well enough alone in their minds, and so were compelled to regurgitate the essence of the baffling experience to even strangers, like a twelve year old ancient mariner
