Artist statement:

I decided to paint the mountains from the courtyard of my apartment building. I let my friends choose the colors from the 10 I had. The idea behind this was that even though I was the one painting it felt like everyone’s art. I didn’t think one minute of this showed enough of the process so I sped it up in order to show the multiple friends come and go throughout the day. Our courtyard faces the mountains during sunset and I’ve always wanted to commemorate all of the days spent watching the sunsets from our courtyard together. We collectively decided on colors and mountains and spent the day appreciating the mountains and brainstorming this piece. Will definitely be doing something like this again.

lily, I feel like this was iconic. I just loved the attitude you showed in the video, wearing multiple glasses showing the top half of your face. I think this was innovative while also playful and exciting. I think this semester you have done a great job adding humor while still making the project look professional and well done.

4d performance project Artist Statement

I choose to do my own take on The Artist is Present

After watching the documentary I thought it was such a powerful piece I want to recreate and experience something similar using animals in a natural but slightly surreal environment.

I wanted the piece to obviously have some humor to it, but still show some connection

to the characters .

It definitely was fun and I loved the process of getting the whole thing together.

Even though I work in film and commercials I still enjoy putting together all the moving parts of a project..

Project 4 Performance Art

In deciding what I really wanted to hone in on for this project I decided to draw a figure. Figure drawing is something I am fascinated with. Though I am not much good at it yet I want to continue to work on this practice until I make it perfect. As they say “practice makes perfect” and continuing to work on this will be great at expanding my art forms. I really wanted to focus on the specific shapes that make up the body in this figure. Thinking of the circles, ovals, rectangles, and oblong that piece together little details. Once those things are added then details and connections can be formed. As for the song I chose to add to the background, I wanted something that was peaceful, scenic yet exciting. That's when I landed on this song by Christian Löffler named “Haul”. I feel like it adds a nice compliment to the figure and creates a beautiful background.

Artist Statement 4: “Static”

This piece was performed as part of the “MSU Denver Dance Works with DTAPP’s Metamorphosis” show on April 30th and May 1st. While I wait for the final cut of the video from the videographer to share with y’all, I’m uploading the rehearsal footage. I’ve edited the hue of the video to mimic the lighting we had in the live performance piece.

Hannah Slate and I started creating this piece over a year ago with the intention of

crafting a live performance piece together. Overtime, this work became about exploring the concept of anxiety.

When anxiety strikes, how do we manage? Do we shut down? Do we go into overdrive to ease our anxious thoughts? How do we handle anxiety as individuals? How can we collectively handle anxiety as interconnected beings?

Readings 4- Performance Art

In reading the article The Other History of Intercultural Performance by Coco Fusco the analysis of public performance in relation to collaborative performance is vitally interesting. She runs through the history of performance and its deep relation to her artistic performative work. The article specifically focuses on a collaboration with the artist Guillermo Gomez-Pena and Fusco sharing their unique performance of savages inside a golden cage is notable in intention. Her intention being exposure to the western and primitive nature of people. Their goal behind this performance was to produce a productive discourse around the question of Otherness. I reading more about the relationship of this Otherness shared by performance was extremely interesting. It helped give a clear picture and understanding to performative artistry. Which is vitally important to understand as an artist.

In the other article named Performance: a Hidden History by Roselee Goldberg there was a similar theme of understanding this performance art. She focused her discussion in this article on the effects of performance to Dadaism, the early Russian avant-garde, Italian Futurism, and the Stage Workshop of the Bauhaus. As well as examples from artists who primarily use this mode of performance art. I particularly liked her mention that performance art is undertaking an action instead of creating a concrete thing. This article much like the other was an important exposure to this form of art. It will deftly be useful to think back on these example and history in the future.

Project 3 - Supercut

Dumpster Fire

Artist Statement:

Originally, for this project I wanted to take cuts from my favorite Netflix show, Bojack Horseman of Bojack saying certain phrases. However, looking at a lot of my other work in this class and others, I noticed I tend to choose easy subjects that are not a challenge to work on, things that I know I can make look good or finish without any serious complications. I focus on silly, light-hearted subjects… things that the world could probably live without.

Something the world could live without but had to deal with anyways? The pandemic. 2020. Quarantining. I know that videos encompassing 2020-21 are out there, but we were given a supercut, 1 minute limit challenge. I decided to find clips from news videos of challenges and issue from 2020 as I could, and fit as many as I could into this project. Although I failed to keep my video to a minute (and ten seconds), I found it challenging to narrow it down to just that. I took out at least 5 other major events from 2020, and I was still sitting at a 1 minute and 45 second video. For context though, I started with around 6 minutes of recorded clips. All that being said, here we are, 2 years after that dumpster fire of a year started. Here’s a look back on what we went through.

Technical Exercise 3 : Music Video

Videos and pictures are from a hectic trip to Ecuador and The Galápagos Islands . It was my first trip outta the county and I didn’t know who was on the trip until I showed up to the airport. One of the most life changing experiences for myself and expanding my knowledge of how other cultures live. Weird example but you can’t flush toilet paper there (pipes are too small) and only drink filtered bottled water.

Art Project 3: One Minute Supercut

I've recently visited the CVA 2022 BFA spring student exposition to expose myself to other artists' work and gain confidence/inspiration for my submission for the fall applicants' work. As an artist, I constantly compare myself to others' work and how I can improve myself along the way. I just transferred to Metro this semester because I want to pursue something that makes me and others feel passionate about the work I can create. Getting accepted to the BFA program is a big step forward in developing your character and work as an artist. So that's why for this project I chose different clips of multiple students' work from the spring exhibition to put into one coherent viewing clip that has a calming vibe. I knew the beginning and end of the video had to be connected somehow and thought that some trippy colors could add to the viewing experience. I took the artistic liberty to rename each clip by the emotions or thoughts that occurred when critiquing their work. I included two different quotes or affirmations as an introduction and end of the video. These sayings I use daily to help ease my anxiety and allow myself to remember we are all just cells floating on a rock in the middle of a galaxy.

I am super interested to see how you added all of the cool effects and crazy stuff, I have never used this application before so I definitely had to learn how things worked together. Project 3: 1 Minute Supercut “Fiona’s Breakdowns”

When it comes to things like television and movies I hardly find myself getting wrapped up in the emotions being portrayed by the characters. I may feel stress because of unresolved conflicts or the excitement of being on the edge of my seat at the climax of a storyline, but truly feeling the struggle and desperation of a character is not a feeling I’m familiar with.

When it comes to Shameless, however, the feelings and scenarios portrayed by Fiona Gallagher are all too real to me, and is one of the few characters that I cry with. Her struggle to keep everything together while she’s actively falling apart is a feeling that cuts deep for me and for many others, so for this project I wanted to display just some of the moments I really resonated with her in this way. Her strength and perseverance despite all the odds stacked against her (for those unfamiliar, raising all 5 of her siblings because of her absent, mentally ill, and addicted parents) are traits that inspire me, even if the story is fictional.

Project 3: One Minute Supercut

Expecto Patronum ✨

For my Supercut, I decided to use clips from my favorite movie franchise, Harry Potter. For the repeated theme within each clip, I chose the phrase or spell, Expecto Patronum, and I only used clips of Harry Potter using the spell. Surprisingly, I only found that he used that spell around five times throughout the films. I chose this specific spell because I thought that it was beautiful and heartfelt. The spell translates to ‘I expect (or await) a guardian’ and is used against Dementors, dark creatures that feed on human happiness. The spell is a projection of positive feelings and happy memories, and I wanted to gather every moment that Harry had to use it.

I absolutely LOVE Harry Potter so seeing this was such a treat. I think you did I really great job conceptualizing your ideas and putting the perfect scenes together! I do think the transitions between each scene could somehow be smoother, but this is something I should work on too. But super great idea and execution!!

Project 3: One Minute Supercut- Nurtured Nature

In considering what I wanted to do for this project, I seemed to be super drawn to adding the imagery of flowers into this in some way. I didn’t know exactly how I wanted to depict them or what message I wanted to send so I did some research on some key words, flowers, life, nature. After doing this my ideas expanded, and I remembered a song that is dear to my heart for many reasons that I wanted to depict in this project as well. This song from Porter Robinson named Lifespan shares an instrumental of the waves of life in excitement and somber. This beautiful soundtrack makes a perfect background for the floral display of this project. Displaying the life and beauty of flowers and their birth was the goal. So, the final product of this piece shares a compilation of flowers growth and existence focusing on the beauty of each specific flower. The name of this project is derived partly from the song as it is in an album called Nurture by Porter Robinson, additionally the “nature” part being self-explanatory pointing toward flowers.
