Bronze corydoras fry update: new generation
The fry from previous videos are continuing to do well. They have all grown enough that itâs been impossible to tell the nursery-raised and âwildâ babies apart for some time now. It seems to be a pretty happy cory colony in there.
It had been a while, but last night I spotted at least one new baby in thereâat around the same size as when the older fry started spending more time out in the open. There may be more, but so far Iâve only seen one at a time.
Most of the corys were still hiding in cover at the back of the tank after a water change, but featuring here: Grumpy Old Lady, a couple of the younger adults, and the Endler Boys dancing around everywhere as usual. Finally the new baby/babies made an appearance in the open, and one of the older babies is very fond of vacuuming the plants and breeding net in use as an Endler fry holding cell.

Corydoras fry - Day 66 - 1st meal in the big tank!
From early this morning. I had to go to bed before it finished uploading.
The extended family all together! Plus some divebombing Endler Boys acting like nuts, as usual.
The new fry are still bleached out some after the move a couple of hours earlier. But, they seem to be settling in well, and are already not acting particularly shy of the bigger fish.
Sometimes they will dart away from the Old Lady, who still looks like a whale compared to even the younger adults. And no wonderâŚ
Also visible here: some better shots of the three larger surprise babies I have seen so far, who survived in the main tank.
The two smaller babies actually seem to be around the same age as the ones just added from the nursery tank. Iâm guessing theyâve had good luck finding a steady supply of food in there, and maybe the new batch will grow more quickly too now that thereâs more room and better foraging for them. They havenât exactly been starving in the nursery, but they still havenât put on nearly as much growth over the same time.

Bronze corydoras fry - Day 66 - Release time!
We lost the smallest fry a few days ago. That was the first since the early deaths in the first week, for 6/10 surviving overall. No idea what happened, but Iâm guessing it was the runt because of hidden health problems and this probably was not a direct result of anything I did wrong. The rest have been acting perfectly fine, though so did that one before I found it dead one morning. Disappointing.
But, the remaining 6 babies seemed ready to move into the main tank anytime. They shouldnât fit into anyoneâs mouth now, and could use the extra space. I decided to go ahead and move them tonight.
Here, theyâre in the small jar Iâve been using to transfer the male Endlers. It seemed like it might be better to release them into the big tank together, rather than one at a time. Toward a shaded corner with some cover, to feel more secure.
Hopefully more video upcoming, after theyâve settled in some and are less stressed. Two of them were already sitting out in the open shortly after the move, and more will hopefully come out for a meal in a while.

Bronze corydoras fry - Day 38
Another that I forgot to post here, from a few weeks ago.
There are some very noticeable size differences now, with a couple of them looking about half the size of some of the others. This is apparently not unusual, though.
The larger ones might be about ready to go into the main tank, but Iâm thinking itâs probably better to keep them all together until everyone is big enough that I feel more comfortable moving them.
Better to play it safe, and theyâre still getting extra feedings in the nursery tank. (Though down to 3-4x/day now, from the 5 or 6 starting out.)
Bronze corydoras fry - Day 33
From a few days ago, but I forgot to post it here then.
Feeling pretty confident IDing them as C. aenaes now.
Theyâve been growing well enough that I am guessing they should be able to move into the main tank within a few weeks. I donât think they would fit into anyone elseâs mouth at this point, but better to be safe.
I did notice tonight that several fry around the same size have started coming out now in there, and would try to move them in with these if catching them were at all feasible. Thereâs also at least one larger, older fry who has apparently been lurking in there a while.
Finally some video of what may or may not be the same older surprise bronze cory baby from earlier.
With one of the (not so big yet) adults videobombing toward the end, for a better idea of size.
No idea how old that one might be, or if there are more of the bigger babies lurking somewhere. The one(s) I saw must have been pretty good at hiding up to this point.
Terrible video, because of course it was lurking in the darkest part of the tank. Plus phone camera.
But, hereâs a surprise fry at large in the main tank! Iâm guessing from that last batch of eggs, though it could be from one I missed when collecting the ones I did manage to save. Or from some I didnât see in there. But, definitely close in age/size to the babies Iâve been raising.
Hoping to get photos/video of that soon too, but I actually spotted this one when I was looking for another quite a bit larger surprise baby that came out to eat with the others tonight. So of course the larger one made itself scarce when I went to get my phone. Still hanging back some from the bigger fish, but hopefully it will spend more time out in the open soon.
There may well be more in there, but I was pleasantly surprised to see those two today. Theyâre (over)due another water change in there, so at least I know to be extra careful with the bottom siphoning now đ¨
ETA: I spotted at least two of the very little guys at the same time while this was uploading. Also, one of the Endler Boys chasing one of the babies around like a butthead. đŹ Theyâre big enough now that I doubt they could fit in even an adult Endlerâs mouthânot sure about the bigger corys yet, though at least theyâre not predatory. And they seem to be pretty good about avoiding the bigger fish, or they probably wouldnât have made it this far. Still wishing it were at all feasible to catch any little ones I see out of there, to put in with the other fry.

Corydoras fry - Day 27 (plus Endler fry)
Theyâre starting to show some of the bronze cory (C. aenaes) iridescence on their cheeks, as should be just about visible here. So, that mystery may be solved.
Also temporarily sharing quarters: a few Endler fry. I thought they were settled in well enough after the move for the overhead LED not to bother them, but apparently not. Didnât intend to stress them more.
Separating the males out, Iâve been putting them in a breeding net holding cell until I can be sure the right ones got scooped out of the fry tank. They swarm, and itâs a lot easier (and probably less stressful for everyone involved) than trying to chase the wrong tiny Endlers down in the 180L. There are at least two in Baby Fish Jail right now who need to go back to the other tank, but one move a day is plenty.
This time, I decided to try just putting them in the hang-on tank with the cory fry instead of setting up the net again. Hesitant at first, but theyâre close to the same size now. Nobody will fit in anyone elseâs mouth, and they should be roommates again soon enough. After watching them carefully for a while anyway, everyone seems fine with the arrangement.
Corydoras fry - Day 22
They are definitely looking and acting like corys by now.
Iâm leaning toward C. aeneas, with all the spawning activity Iâve seen, but the parents could be some of the âBlack Venezuelanâ C. schultzei. Itâs still hard to tell.
Here, theyâre worked up because I sat by the tank to get some video before feeding them. But theyâre hyper little critters most of the time.
Corydoras fry - Day 17
These little guys are starting to look more like corys and less like tadpoles.
Theyâre very active, and getting enough bigger that I would be considering moving them over to their own larger tank, if there were many more than 7 of them in that 2L capacity Marina hang-on.
Corydoras fry - Day 13
Munching down on some of the Ocean Nutrition baby brine shrimp again.
These were extremely hard to get any kind of decent shot of in there, but I was surprised that some of the eggs from that spawning orgy the other night are apparently inaccessible enough that theyâre still on those couple of leaves. Right in the main filter outflow, where the fish kept getting blown around trying to spawn there.
What surprised me almost as much was that all the more opaque white, unfertilized eggs seem to be gone now. When there were at least as many as viable ones earlier. All the ones I can see now look to be developing.
Maybe snails have been selectively eating the bad ones? I recall seeing someone mention routinely putting MTS in with the eggs to clean them up and get rid of any fungus that might try to develop. There are (too many) MTS and ramshorns in there, and thatâs the main explanation I can think of. Going by past behavior, the fish will just chow down on any they can get at.
I am fighting the urge to try to remove those eggs too, but I really donât have anywhere suitable to keep them or any new fry right now. I donât know that they would be at all safe going in with the existing ones, besides the overcrowding potential with the much bigger new batch of fertilized eggs. A few daysâ age difference shouldnât be any big problem, but I hesitate with well over a week.
Really not set up for any larger scale cory breeding operations here, though I do feel pretty bad about leaving those to fend for themselves.
Well, it seems that the new eggs should be fine with the existing fry, at least according to this video: Collecting Cory Eggs.
It's just the snails that may not be safe with the eggs, and she was showing ramshorns.
Too late this time, but good to know for the future.
