i ran across a link to this rather famous fanart as i was reading fic, and i would just like to point out what an excellent piece of art it is just on its own merits. the composition, the lighting, the poses, the textures. knowing who the characters are makes it even better – knowing that the dark form swathed in sickly underwater light is a hero, the pale and vulnerable figure shining in clear light is a villain/victim, and that the cruel act depicted is more medicine than torment, that’s what makes it hit like a freight train. but even without that. it’s still a gut-punch of gorgeous.

Fun History Fact: The overwhelming majority of cowboys in the U.S. were Indigenous, Black, and/or Mexican persons. The omnipresent white cowboy is a Hollywood studio concoction meant to uphold the mythology of white masculinity.

I think it was high school when i overheard some white girl put on her best semi-disgusted and confused voice and go “why do so many Mexicans dress up like cowboys?” and I had to be the person to tell her.

Why do you think the whites say buckero? Cause they couldn’t say vaquero.
