A child is punished for moving and making noise.

To avoid more punishment, the child sits still and is quiet. But they have to actively remind themself constantly to sit still and be quiet.

The teacher sees the child sitting still and being quiet. The teacher treats this as the baseline.

Since the child is putting a lot of effort into sitting still and being quiet, doing so distracts from paying attention to what the teacher is teaching. The child then is punished for not paying attention.

The child now knows that they'll be punished no matter what they do. And they can't explain why they struggle, because any attempt to explain is arguing.

#as a teacher with adhd I watch this change happen in real time usually around 4th-5th grade #earlier with adhd kids- they’re treated like villains for it #personally in my classroom I ask for one or the other- if you have to listen and be quiet- you can fidget (not run around the run but wiggle #and walk)#and if you need to be still/seated you’re allowed to chat with who’s around you- nothing too crazy but go ahead and talk #if students cannot manage to do either- we practice doing both BUT. I don’t expect them to pay attention to me.#that whole silent/sitting still time is spent focusing on JUST the silent/sitting still. like meditation. I just monitor them practicing #kids are literally just humans in training and they also model their behavior after adults #answering ‘why’ is so powerful for kids bc they literally do not know why and need to know #they’re not asking why to piss anyone off I promise #they just want to understand #and tbh when I don’t have a reason why- and I’m asking them to do something just bc I myself need them to I say:#‘because I’m asking you’ and it literally works like magic. they’re literally people too and see that everyone has needs #always aware? no. but if you make them aware they’re soooo empathetic and they lock in #and I make sure to listen to kids explain bc again- wired for WHY- but also explain back why I’m making my choices. sometimes regardless of #their WHY. they get it!!!! they really get it!!!#I love testing them like ‘what do you think you should do right now’ bc the ones who ARE attention seeking on purpose will lie but then #apologize bc they realize what they’re doing is causing a problem. ans the ones who don’t lock back in immediately #also so specific but when littles come to me and ask me to open something like a water bottle or a snack and they say they can’t bc they’re #‘too weak’ I stand there and watch them try again and something about me watching gives them muscles bc they #ALWAYS get the strength when I’m their audience. and dw I tell them how strong they are after lol #I love working with kids!!!!!!!! hate when they’re dehumanized!!!!!!
