Pencil on cheap brown paper. Highlights from this month are a Linked Universe comic, the new Kingdom Hearts IV trailer, and a whole lotta foxes. For some reason, I had a lot of instances of the right sides of the artwork drifting upwards—you can see it on highlight #5 below. It's not a rare phenomenon for me, but June saw more of it than usual.
Fierce Deity Link reaching forward ominously. I realized I wanted the other hand forward in the comic this is for, so this particular image is scrapped. …Maybe he's about to pet Fox' head?
My character in a Destiny-themed D&D game I'm in. His name is Kara (based on Sora), and the name of his Ghost is Roas.
An aplomado falcon, via Animal Photo References.
Fox, from Star Fox (Switch 2 version). Day 3 of drawing foxes and this was the first time I drew him where he didn't look like a dog >_<.
Sabre, from an unreleased N64 game called "Dinosaur Planet." As it happens, my experience drawing various Links helped with Sabre.
Krystal, also from Dinosaur Planet. Related to Krystal from Star Fox Adventures.

hi! I hope this isn't a bother, but the mediafire links for the kh3 manga scanlation seems to be broken again...it keeps getting stuck on generating a new download key u_u
Well that's not good : T
I tried downloading a few of the chapters and they came through okay. It might have been a temporary issue, or if there's a specific chapter that was giving you trouble I can reupload it and see if that fixes things.
Pencil on cheap paper. I'd been thinking for a long time to do a digital painting series of every shot in Breath of the Wild's E3 2016 trailer, so I figured this month I might try to sketch them all out. I really like how most of them turned out, but geez did they take a lot longer than I'd've liked x_x
A shot from the BotW E3 2016 trailer where Link climbs the face of the Temple of Time.
A shot towards the end of the BotW E3 2016 trailer where Link confronts a Guardian.
A Fierce Deity Link that I may have gone a little overboard on.
Solid Snake looking down at you.
Tails from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. I've been experiencing for the first time the 3D Sonic games alongside my brother, and this image was the best of my page of attempts at drawing Tails.
More pencil on cheap brown paper. Lots of Psychonauts art this month. I've got a Psychonauts comic planned so I ended up doing a lot of sketches of Raz to practice. I took a long time to realize you can't see his hair when his goggles are down ¬_¬
A Darkside from Kingdom Hearts, first from memory and then with reference. Use reference when you draw.
Markiplier and his dog, Chica, the latter of whom is distorted by a PhotoBooth effect.
A prospective pose for the Keyblade Dragon of The Gazing Eye. After seeing the new Vigil breed, I knew my rendition of Xehanort's Keyblade was going to get an upgrade.
Raz from Psychonauts just received a compliment.
Raz is much shorter than Samus (Metroid).
Snake circa Metal Gear Solid 2, seen from behind. Had to do something for April 30th. Happy MGS2 leak day, also.
Pencil on cheap brown paper. Welcome to the month of using Dynasty Warriors: Origins footage as reference. I'd recorded my brother playing with a bunch of different weapons, but the "Luan's Wing Uniform" has a lot of draping cloths that flutter when you move and they frequently made it hard to tell what was going on with the legs.
A Loftwing statue from Skyward Sword.
Ziluan from Dynasty Warriors: Origins, wielding a spear.
Ziluan, about to strike with a crescent blade.
The follow-through of a staff swing.
Sora is confused. It's hard to tell, but he's holding a sweetpuff familiar from Flight Rising. (The ③ means it was the third panel on that page.)
Kazuma from Cave Story, petting a dragon (also from Cave Story).

This time I used pencil. Because of the non-white paper, the contrast with pencil is lessened compared to pen strokes. Scanning these in color and taking the red channel helped compensate. I do like having my eraser back and not going through two pens per month X'D
Kingdom Hearts IV Sora is having a bad day.
Drew this on the 14th. Happy Singles Awareness Day!
A sketch of my dad.
The leg of the Knight Construct from Age of Imprisonment. I like that guy. He'd hard to draw.
Young Link says hello.
A rhinoceros hornbill, via Animal Photo References. Who's idea was it to glue a banana to the top of a bird, anyway? It's interesting how the eyes can actually see to the tip of the beak pretty well.
In 2024, I had a New Year's resolution to fill an entire 8.5x11" page with sketches per day. I rather liked doing that and missed it in 2025. So in 2026 I decided to do it again. And in line with my not-New Year's resolution to post more of the things I make online in the wake of the increase in non-human art, I wanted to upload the highlights.
These were all done with ballpoint pen on cheap brown paper. The pen was to help the lines be more stark against the non-white paper, but during January I went through two pens, and the end of their usable range ended up being a little frustrating to work with. (Also I missed having an eraser).
Breath of the Wild Link, making some kebabs.
A sleepy Skyward Sword Link.
Zelda, circa Tears of the Kingdom, being hugged by Link, Sonia, and Rauru.
Figuring out how to draw Dragon Zelda's horns.
A sketch of the Keyblade Dragon* for Oathkeeper. I think I might use a pose like this for the KHIII Ultima instead, since I figured out a better pose for Oathkeeper and Oblivion as a set.
Pretty close to the final pose for the Metal Chocobo Keyblade Dragon*. I never figured out what to do with the tail, but I can work it out later.
(*"Keyblade Dragons" is the name of a Flight Rising fandragon project I've been working on for a while. I intend to make custom artwork for each Keyblade.)
since the kh3 manga is well past finished and we've all had time to let it settle, i wanna broach this topic!
below the cut bc i doth yap
it seems that the author/artist for the manga, shiro amano, wasn't given as much liberty or time to twist kh3's narrative in the same way that he did the kh2 manga. lots of dialogue is rewritten to better fit the format of a manga, but the flair of personality that amano gave these characters in kh2 is very absent in 3. and if i had to guess, it's a combination of restraints from publishers (ie disney and square) as well as deadlines pushing him into a corner to go with old reliable shot compositions and poses, as well as not rewriting some otherwise awkward scenarios.
there's a lot of "original" content still in the manga, but it's nowhere near what was being poured into the kh2 manga, and it's frankly disappointing. to expect better than what kh3 gave us is a privileged thing for me to say, but kh2's manga delivered quite a lot for a game that was already near a 9/10 for most fans of it. and given kh3's divisive position in the series, i hope i'm not the only one to put my faith in the manga being able to spruce up parts of the game that were, for lack of better terms, underwhelming.
alas, it seems they had their wrist grabbed and hand forced for much of the latter half of kh3's manga. scenarios that were otherwise bland or underwhelming in the game were given little extra flair or flatulence.
a wishlist from me, if you were curious:
roxas's return and how exactly that happened
kairi being kidnapped would be rewritten to be more believable
sora and ventus forced to confront vanitas in a more direct light
the main cast other than sora getting dialogue between themselves
while you can argue a handful of these aren't necessary and were probably just me getting my hopes up, some stuff DID get expanded on and proved to be intriguing food for thought for the reader. vanitas gets a much more expanded section than he has in the game. kairi, while not escaping her unfortunate dilemma, was more proactive before being nabbed.
if we're down to personal preference, the entire ending of OG kh3 felt rushed and like the writers were trying to hop, skip and leap over hurdles to get to the end, without taking the time to put proper thought and care into every character's dilemma, dialogue, and their actions. a lot of characters just stand around and wait for them to be talked to by sora, before they engage in the conversation. or they just go mute after having their brief moment, and remain a background character for the entire ending of the game. re:mind somewhat remedied this, but writing errors are still present in a vanilla playthrough without the dlc, and frankly, that matters regardless of what future endeavors may fix.
(also the dlc does not retcon any of the issues present in the base game, so they're still absolutely worth bringing up)
the manga sadly does not stray far from what kh3 established, and actually feels like it's rushing FASTER through the ending of the game than the game itself ever did. one page can cover up to a minute's worth of dialogue and blocking. expressions aren't varied, and a lot of shots are just taken close-ups of characters faces, or they appear to be shot-for-shot recreations of some angles seen in the in-game cutscenes.
kh2's manga took 11 years to produce and fully release. comparatively, kh3's manga took 5 years to achieve the same. and before there's any concern, kh3 also takes a considerable amount of its dedicated pages to show off the disney worlds, like kh2 did.
that's not to call any of the work bad or poor. just an observation, rather. the kh3 manga seems to have suffered from timecrunch, or overall lack of care that was present in the kh2 manga. either the product wasn't intended to be more than just a retelling, or maybe there was some external pressure.
either way, this felt like a topic worth pursuing other's about. am i reading too much into this? did you or anyone else notice these kinds of things? anything else to note? i'm curious!
I agree with a lot of what @storm-driver says, though I have one thing to add regarding verbatim usage of shots from the game.
This actually came up a lot during the scanslation process, and while I do think it looks a bit clunky for the rest of the manga's style and it means they couldn't diverge much from what the game did, it was actually beneficial for me since I was editing out the sound effects and such. In order to allow for the most flexibility with the English sound effects I would edit out the Japanese sounds as completely possible, so background reuse helped me fill in what sometimes would have otherwise been fairly complex gaps.
A particularly favorite instance I encountered was on the first page of Chapter 24 (Toy Box, part 5). They'd used a shot from the game, but wanted to frame Buzz a bit different for the manga's presentation. So they shrunk him and nudged him further into the panel. Except, they didn't remove Buzz from the reference screenshot, so he technically ends up doubled-up. You can see it along the right edge:
Still, this was very helpful editing for out the Japanese text smack-dab in the middle of the panel XD.
