The observation deck at the Alberni location of JJ Bean reminds me of the Plus 15 in Calgary. Which reminded me of the Devonian Gardens in the Core. I am excited to get lost in the skyway and to read in the gardens once again. I love Vancouver reason #7 The West End Farmer's Market. Where I can buy a weeks worth of beautiful, fresh, local, small business, nutritious food, while able to interact with all of wonderful people who call the West End home. And! I can buy delivious VEGAN baking from Chocolate cake, to bread, to cinnamon buns(@therealbillshady this is your doing), to pizza rolls, to energy bars. Taking a moment to sit, drink my coffee, munch on my treats and experience this event for one of the last times I will be able to partake. On average it takes a person 15 minutes to drink a cup of coffee. It takes 20+years for a Starbucks cup to biodegrade in a landfill some sources are less optimistic. 20 years of garbage for your 15 minute enjoyment. 4 billion Starbucks cups alone are used per year with most of them ending up in a landfill. In my experience, many are littered carelessly where ever the person who finished drinking it happened to be. In order to be able to hold liquids safely, Starbucks paper cups are lined with a thin layer of 100% oil-based polyethylene plastic made by companies like Dow and Chevron. This plastic lining makes the cups impossible to recycle because it clogs most recycled paper mills’ machinery. There are only a few cities with facilities able to recycle 'clean' cups. As I sit at home, eating chocolate cake that I bought from the market for breakfast(It's my sister's birthday in Saskatchewan, you have to eat cake on someone's birthday), I am thinking about how lovely the farmers market is. The wonderful person who sold me the cake commented 'I love this market, everyone is so organized and brings their own containers and bags'. I shared with her how bringing reusable containers when I go grocery shopping at markets or not is a new thing for me and that I couldn't believe how easy it is to do so and how much waste I do not create because of this new(for me) way of life. Wherever you are shopping, when possible, bring your own containers to put open faced products in, let the store or owner deal with the packaging left behind. At a farmers market, most are thrilled that they can reuse the container you are not choosing to take home with you. At a grocery store, you will receive odd looks while sparking change in whoever you are interacting with. When they see you find a way to circumvent the waste that would be otherwise created that they then have to needlessly dispose of, change begins. Wherever you are, whenever you are, VOTE WITH YOUR MONEY.
