today i was searching for some anime to watch. i have been a fan in the past, but haven't been able to find any title that i was really interested in. for me, one major criteria is for anime to not be objectifying women sexualizing minors etc. i found myself googling "non creepy anime" and i stumbled upon a post on reddit(yes i understand, it's not the best place to look for non creepy anything) but nonetheless, the op was asking for "Any recommendations for some good anime shows that are not creepy chan-bait"
Then OP listed some example animes. And first two on the list, were animes that i previously watched. And i was not happy to see them on there.
The first anime was "Ghost in the shell" and if you have not seen it, you can just google it and look at any of the posters to get my point. But the most notable is maybe a promotional poster for 1995 movie where we can see a naked woman, facing away from us. she's kneeling with her legs spread out, turning sideways so her breast is visible, her face with a blank expression turned up. Wires and cables are plugged into her body in many places. Her skin is the proliphic "shell" and in the cracks her mechanical inside is shown. The first thing we see of Motoko Kusanagi is her butt and breasts, and trust, the poster is not the last time we will see her naked. But her character is so deep, outside she is this beatiful sexy woman, but inside she is nothing but screws and batteries. How deep is that. Pretty deep i guess.
And the second anime listed was Neon Genesis Evangelion. Don't get me started on this anime, because it's also so so so deep. Believe it or not but evangelion also has a character that is female, often naked and is also a cyborg of sorts. The difference here is unlike a grown woman of Ghost in the Shell, she is a child. A fourteen year old child, who is sexualised the hell out of her character, not only by other characters in the show but of course by the creators themselves. And not only her, most of the children in evangelion no matter the gender are being objectified and often portrayed in compromising situations. I will not be adding any pictures as proofs as i don't want them on my page.
Yes, I know that the culture in Japan is supposed to be different from wherever i am. Objectification of women, children and sometimes men, is, and was for many years, a part of the anime/manga culture. And it doesn't seem to change anytime soon, and who am i to judge, who am i to police. Surely as a survivor of csa, someone who was groomed into believing that children can be sexy, i just project my own trauma on everything i see. Surely i am too sensitive and it's not that deep.
But it is though. It is that deep. What hurt me, was the fact that someone who was looking for "non creepy anime", who, i assume believed that they are better than that, believed that shows that i described earlier were not creepy. That's all.
